So i really want to get my sister something undertale for Christmas. She's obsessed with it, it makes her really happy, it's something I see her taking a huge interest in. So I find these buttons online and link them to my friend James.

And he goes OFF on me. About how it's wrong and bad to sell unofficial merch, how you are not allowed to do it for undertale, and I was shocked by two things:

1. I've NEVER seen a game creator be so insistent about not selling unofficial merch. I understand where he's coming from, but it seems extremely rude to do so.
2. My friend seemed so angry and it really took me aback how angry he was, but that's more of his own problem.

So I asked my sister for confirmation and she's a little more lenient about it and is trying to find the article. She thinks items in limited stock are okay, but he meant nothing produced en masse, especially at conventions. She's trying to find something with the exact details but hasn't messaged me back yet.

Here is the thing I'm looking at for her. I am not sure if it's in limited quantity, etc., my sister says Etsy SHOULD be fine but it doesn't have a number of how many are in stock (implying there are probably a bit).

Chime in with your thoughts? Don't get super-angry or something, just what you think about me purchasing this if I will, what you think is allowed in terms of buying merch. It somewhat upsets me because there is almost NO official merch, and all of it is in the Sprite format, which isn't what I'm looking for (also I might get a Mettaton thing for myself at one point and it doesn't have his EX form). Etsy has what I'm looking for, but for what I've seen, it's not allowed. Or at least not morally right.

There's nothing wrong with Etsy. Almost everything game related there is unofficial because it's handmade. Not sure what your friend's issue is. Etsy is a really popular service and there's absolutely nothing "morally" wrong with purchasing from it.

However, if you're still unsure, Fangamer (a more "official" website) is also selling Undertale stuff here.

Yeah, I saw that, but it's very limited (my sister loves Sans, Frisk, and Napsablook (I forget how to spell it). It's also in sprite form.

Thanks for your feedback. James is usually a little super-liberal and you-can-never-deviate-from-my-beliefs guy. One of his flaws. So I told him that he's getting emotional about this and I am willing to cross moral grey areas.

It's illegal for people to sell stuff that infringes copyright so a lot of the stuff on Etsy is most likely illegal but it's small scale enough that nobody will care enough to stop it. & even if they did, it would be the person who sold the goods who would be busted and not you.

Indie games in general are affected by unofficial merch more than big name stuff like Pokemon, because they're small and it takes profits that they need away from them whereas Pokemon is well-off already. You're not gonna get in trouble though.

Hello all.

Actually, Toby Fox, creator of undertale, has shown (though in a very kind and respectful way) a distaste in people SELLING fan work of undertale that is not commissioned, or done in person at a convention, as it does actually affect his income from selling his own.

I can not link the source here as it would be against the rules, but there have been three mixups on the matter.

Having worked with a few indie game designers and webcomics I can tell you that us creators and the owners of these properties actually do find it a bit annoying and bothersome sometimes, because it is making profit off of our own work. We created these characters, we made them lovable, and yet others are selling our characters. Yes, sometimes credit is given, but that is cash that isn't going inside of our pockets that we should be earning, as we own the characters.

That's just giving some insight, but honestly... In a lot of these cases the creators understand that the fans do not know, and glad they are showing support in some way. Sometimes it's not that big of a deal. Everybody has to make it some way. In ways we're all hypocrites when it comes to this. Don't fear anything about buying. That's fine. And I don't think many content creators would be angry at you for buying some sweet art. Selling it is another story.

Yeah. I also try to avoid anything that doesn't credit other artists that may have designed it (I found a shirt that ripped the design from a Tumblr artist and promptly got away from it) and stuff that seems to be super-mass-produced. I don't sell stuff, I just buy it, but I try to be respectful but also have my own goals in mind.

also, its not as if there isnt official merch on sale and it's also not as if there isnt gonna be more. Its a lot like the homestuck thing, if someone doesnt want stuff sold and they own the copyright, and if you truly love the thing then I guess it's a little... odd to a) not support the game and also b) go against the wishes of the creator??

Hopefully though Toby and whoever is helping with producing the merch (is fan gamer just the selling platform?) will be able to start catching up to demand.

The official merch keeps going out of stock it's selling so well, and I feel like that in addition to the lack of diversity in merch right now is leading more people to go the unofficial route, combined with them possibly not knowing about Toby's wishes. Not saying I agree with it, but that's how markets work.
