It's not really necessary to leave it on. I find it convenient, especially when you're playing a game like Mario Kart; you can just flip it open, do a couple of races and close it again. Same with Smash Bros.

I always leave my 3DS in sleep mode. The only time when I ever turn it off is to clean the screen or when I know I won't be able to play it for an extended period of time.

I've started turning mine off while I'm asleep but otherwise it's always on. I love to go out and get Streetpasses and play coins.

I only keep my 3DS on when I'm either going to school to get Streetpasses or if I'm going anywhere else to get Streetpasses; Otherwise it's off.

Mine is almost always on, and if I'm not currently playing, it's closed. I turn it off to clean the screens and the buttons, and if I'm somewhere where I won't be able to have my charger with me.

I always turn mine off, unless it doesn't completely register that I pushed the button (which it does a lot) and continues to stay on, unless I catch it when it does that. Nowadays I wait for it to turn off before I shut it.
I don't play mine every day. The only time it ever stays on all day is if I'm actually playing it all day or when I'm out and about trying to get StreetPasses or Play Coins.

If I plan on playing more that day, I just close it to put it in sleep mode. But if I'm done for the day, I turn it off.

Sometimes I leave it plugged in and on sleep mode for weeks at a time and then open it up to find that it's unresponsive. That's when I hold the power button down till it turns off and then when I turn it back on it works fine.

I never shut my 3DS off back in the day, but yeah I turn it off most times now. The battery is so bad in sleep mode, when I wanna pick something up and it died from sleep that always sucks.
