I'm playing without Amiiboo cards! I downloaded HHD on a whim and I have an old 3DS so I can't even read them. I would also be prone to collector's fever and the lack of hardware is a great prophylaxis.
I'm still playing ACNL. It gets played first and than I play HHD later or if I have some time. I have a lot to do with 3 real towns.
I wasn't going to buy the cards but sucked in. Found they were very easy to get. I've only used them twice. First was to invite villagers to Goldie house. When I went back to remodel the her house the villagers I invited were still there. Not sure how to get rid of them. After I remodeled they were back again. Very annoying.
The 2nd time was to unlock the Alpine Furniture. It's my favorite set and Willow has it.
Right now I'm playing HHD, NL, and WW I actually really want to get City Folk too, I have never played it and it looks cute.
..after this thread I am ashamed to admit, I went to Best Buy to look for cards. They had the display saying they had them, but I saw none. Further proof I should probably continue without them for now.

My local Gamestop doesn't stock them - they said they had some at game launch and that was it. The sales guy recommended getting them from e-bay or Amazon. After I have played HHD for awhile I can see maybe buying individual cards for specific characters I want. Fortunately, I am not a huge collector!

I ordered a few packs on line and after I got them and started playing the game, I decided not to get any more of them since a steady stream of ever changing visitors show up every day. Since you don't get any different furniture from the amiibo card I am going to just stick with whoever shows up. I have a few special cards and I will be fine with those few. The specials don't seem to come with any new furniture anyway.

I bought the bundle so I can play on my old 3DS as well as my new 3DS. I'm sucked in on the cards too, but I did pick up one of the characters in town, not by using the card. I do like them though since you can invite them over to a home. Nice to know you can remove them though if I get tired of seeing them still there. Here, in CA. the cards are $5.99 a pack. That makes each card worth $1.00 each. I trade or sell with my sister-in-law for ones one has extras of. We trade regular cards for regular, Special for Special, and if we don't have something to trade, we give $1.00 for each card we need that the other doesn't. I don't believe in gouging someone for these cards. I've seen what people charge to get an animal to move to their town from someone else's, and it's ridiculous, and I don't want to get sucked into that with these cards. I realize I'll probably have to buy a lot more, since I still need 21 of Series 1, but they're not that expensive when divided by 6 for the cost of a pack. My husband spent a lot more that that for the Skylanders characters and traps we have for those games.
GG loves ACCF/ACNL and now Happy Home Designer.
I do buy amiibo cards but I have played the game without buying the card's in the beginning, I did get some characters not yet in series 1 which is the only one out currently by going outside the 'shop' and looking around.

I've bought a few packets of the cards and some individual ones on eBay. I think the animals are more happy when you build their homes in the season of their birthdays, but I can be mistaken. One can assign "roles" to them in the town's buildings if you have their card, and apparently call on them to show your creations like in an open house event.
