Hi there, here is the first chapter of my fanfic.

-- 1 --

"Hey, can I sit here?"

Azure turned his head. He had been watching the world outside the train rushing past, lost in his own thoughts. The cat who stood in front of him now was dark blue, and wore a goofy grin.

"Have a seat," he replied, turning back to the window. The day was bright and warm, and he was on his way to visit a friend in the village of DiCaprio.

"So, what's your name?"

Azure turned back to the cat, the minutest of frowns on his face. Could no one sit in peace nowadays? He introduced himself anyway, trying to keep the irritation out of his voice.

"Azure? That's a great name! It's cool, right? Perfect for a guy like you!"

"Uh, yeah, sure," Azure replied. This cat must have had too much cream for breakfast. It was as if his energy was about to spill out all over the train carriage.

"Anyway, I'm Rover. So where are you heading?"

Azure sighed inaudibly and resigned himself to the fact he was going to have to make conversation.

"I'm on my way to DiCaprio, visiting a friend."

"Oh, I know someone who lives there. Her name is Lilac."

"That's who I'm visiting."

"Oh, well the last I heard she was the Mayor of the town, and someone else was moving in to be her second in command. Oh, that must be you!" Rover exclaimed; he was absolutely beaming.

"What- no! I'm not moving in there. Visiting. For the day." Azure tried to explain, but Rover wasn't listening.

"It will be wonderful to watch DiCaprio grow further, although it has blossomed enormously since Lilac became the mayor. I love watching out for the town whenever my train passes. Come to think of it, I've been doing a lot more travelling recently. I don't think I've done this much travelling by train since 2002 or so. Anyway, we're nearing DiCaprio now. You'd better get yourself ready, moving is so much fun, but you have a lot of work ahead of you. It was great meeting you, bye bye for now!"

The cat leapt lightly from his seat, leaving the carriage and entering another one. Azure shook his head. Turning to look out of the window again, he saw Rover had been right. DiCaprio was approaching fast on his left. He smiled. It would be nice to see Lilac again at least.

The train drew to a stop, and Azure stepped off of the train and onto the platform.

"Excuse me! Are you Azure?" A monkey cried from across the platform. Azure wheeled around, confused, but nodded all the same. "Great. I've been asked to send you to the town hall. Here is a map, it's located just here." He pointed to a fairly large building. "Please go there as soon as possible."

Azure stared at him in yet more confusion. Where was Lilac? She was supposed to meet him here. Why did everyone know of his arrival? Was she too busy?

Yes, she must just be too busy right now. After all, she was the mayor.

Sighing deeply, Azure plodded down the steps of the platform, glanced at his map, and turned left towards the town hall.

-- 2 --

As Azure made his way across the village, he passed through the town plaza. The town tree was enormous since the last time he had visited. Then it had been barely more than a sapling. Now it towered above him, the branches so thick with leaves that only a few small rays of sun shone through. Looking up at its vastness made him feel quite small. He paused to admire it, then slowly took in the rest of his surroundings.

There were hybrid flowers bordering the plaza, arranged neatly in alternating blues, pinks, purples, and whites. But then behind these were the occasional non hybrid flower, or one that didn't fit the pattern. The odd red, a few stray yellow, and orange hybrid in one corner. Something about the arrangement looked as if it hadn't been touched or preened in awhile. Moving slightly away from the tree, Azure saw a couple of weeds creeping in amongst the flowers. Was Lilac really so busy being the mayor that she wouldn't have pulled them up?

Azure shrugged it off. Why would Lilac be the only one responsible for the town's upkeep? Surely the other villagers helped out too. Maybe Lilac hadn't noticed and so neither had they.

Azure carried on to the town hall. It was an unimpressive building, but pleasant all the same. The flowers continued in their pattern, bushes were placed just outside, and an enormous clock made of flowers sat just beyond. It was pretty. Azure went inside.

"Hello?" He asked the dog, who was sat behind a desk writing furiously. She bolted into a standing position, beaming.

"Hello, you must be Azure. It's so great to meet you, and we are all so glad you are moving in. Do you have a place to stay?"

"Uh..." Azure struggled to process all the dog had said. "I'm not moving in, I'm visiting Lilac."

"Lilac?" The dog's smile wavered. "Lilac hasn't been around for awhile. She told me you would be moving in the take over while she's away."

"No, we never agreed that." Azure said hurriedly, panic rising in his stomach. Where was Lilac?

"Well, do you plan on staying?" The dog asked.

Azure considered.

"Yes."

"Excellent. See on this map, go up to Main Street and find Tom Nook. He organises houses for all our residents. He will set you up with a place to stay." She pointed out the direction for hm, then sat down and continued her writing.

Azure stared at the map. The houses were lined up in neat rows, the cafe seemed to be in its own little haven. Everything was just how he'd imagined Lilac would organise a town.

"Excuse me, ah-"

"Isabelle."

"Isabelle. How long has Lilac been gone?"

Isabelle bit her lip and fiddled with her pen.

"Well, let's see. I guess... No one saw her at Easter. Then May Day. Or any of the Summer fireworks shows. We did see her at New Years. So, quite a while."

Azure stared at her. It was September. It was September and Lilac hadn't been seen since the beginning of the year. His mouth opened in shock, and he clamped it shut to avoid being rude. Isabelle gave him a momentary sad look, then returned once more to her writing.
