Obviously, many of us will be disappointed at the delay of the Bell Shop, but it sounds like the old code is a nightmare to work with. Thank you to all the developers who are persevering with it and are trying to get the Bell Shop released for us!

Is the main priority to re-write ACC now?

It's a shame how long the Bell Shop has been delayed but I'm still quite hopeful for its release.
I'm curious as to how any new and future coding will effect ACC as it currently stands however...

Things are still early to give much details on what's coming next. And it will depend, a lot, on the availability of current devs and any interest from new devs. We hope to keep smaller things moving with the current site, but any major updates will be deferred for the new site.

It will be a mostly ground-up update. The code will definitely be 100% rewritten, but it's still TBD whether we keep the existing database.

Anybody qualified and interested in helping should let us know.

"And it will depend, a lot, on the availability of current devs and any interest from new devs."

I recall reading somewhere that there had only been one developer application in several months. Is there any way of recruiting developers away from ACC? It just seems that currently there aren't many members (excluding current developers) who are able to help develop the site and get these large projects live quicker. Obviously, paying people to help wouldn't be feasible, but is there another way of finding people to help out? I do fear that without the presence of new features, such as the Bell Shop, the overall activity on ACC members may go down further, which we don't want to see happen.

Well, things have picked up since I said that - we've had four in the last month - but yes, it is true that there are not very many people who seem both willing and able to help out.

As far as finding people from outside ACC goes, I can't think of any way other than hiring someone.

As far as attracting activity to the site, I recall it being said that improving ACC's social media presence was being put off until after the Bell Shop was complete. Since we won't have the Bell Shop in the near future to attract more activity to the site (including potential people who know something about development) at this time, maybe it would be a good idea to consider the building up of a social media presence sooner rather than later.

I don't think we have gotten any updates since the "ACC doesn't need your money" announcement; are those funds still not needed for maintaining the site? I feel like members that want to see the rewrite happen would consider making additional donations if they knew their money would go towards a paid effort to do it, but I'm not sure if donations could ever be enough to hire some sort of developer aid.

Dang, I was pretty crushed upon reading this.

For sometime now I've been fairly positive that the Bell Shop would one of the very few things that would definitely help attract people back to ACC as well as help bring new people in, without it, I feel like we're stuck. Let's face it, The Bell Tree Forums is arguably the largest, and most active Animal Crossing community based website out there right now. I feel like this is mostly due to the fact that they have a handful of features, including a Bell Shop.

While I don't know how they generally generate their funds, rather that be via ads, donations, etc; I think adding some sort of new incentive on acc to get people to donate would be good. It's really hard to find coders to work for free, so I think ACC's only option right now, is to start looking to generate some funds to hire a new team of coders that could perhaps give the site an overhaul.

I'd like to know what other things are possible for you guys to implement onto the site with it's current code? We should try and work with what we have right now. I mean, there are a lot of things that could be done in the meantime to give the community a little push, as well as to help visitors become a little bit more interested in making an account on the site, or at the very least, coming back. I haven't seen any competitions featured on the front page in awhile, I'm not sure if we're still frequently doing them, but I think bringing back those would be a good idea. I also think maybe keeping members/visitors updated on more Nintendo related news would be cool, it's a small thing, but it could definitely get people to at least check out the site once a day.

Overall, I personally would just really hate to see ACC go down the drain just because we don't have the tools at the moment to update the site to a further state. I've been a member here for awhile, not as long as many people, but long enough, and have met some amazing people here. This site has been a really big part of my life since I've joined, as cheesy as that may sound, so I'd really love to see things turned around and a bit more activity to be breathed back into it. I'd be willing to help in other areas as I know nothing when it comes to coding, hopefully we can get some people to step up to the plate though

I agree with previous posters that we should ask for donations to complete the bell shop.

Another option might be to have a separate site that is the bell shop. If it cant be integrated with this code, then a sister site might work.  Of course donations would be critical to make it a reality.

I am a bit disappointed about the bell shop, but honestly it won't affect the love I have for ACC.

I agree that building up social the social media presence is a great idea.  Happy Home Designer just launched and Amiibo Festival is to follow and it just seems like the perfect time to let people know we are here and what the site has to offer.  I just found the facebook page for this site the other day, and felt that it could be better it if it was at least updated more often.

With the release of the new games in the series and the announcement for a new console right around the corner that will probably have an Animal Crossing title it seems ACC might be best served addressing the smaller issues that have been brought up so the site runs smoothly if there is an influx of new members.

I also agree that members would most likely donate to see progress with the bell shop.  Maybe this would be incentive for the developers to try to work together more often?

If the site needs to be rewritten would members get to keep their bells?  If not, is there the possibility that the bells we accumulate could go towards something else like profile perks or special avatars, ect?  Maybe that was the intention of the bell shop already.  It would be nice if it wasn't all for nothing.

Like others, I'm slightly disappointed with the setbacks ACC has faced due to old coding.

Perhaps looking into the most recent Developer applications may be the next step right now; a new team (20 people?), from and outside ACC who could rewrite the old code and start fresh. Donations would be a good idea to help fund external developers, although the donations wouldn't cover the cost for Developers. (Obviously it's easier said that done.)

However, If I'm being completely honest, perhaps donations could have been used earlier in the past to fund external Developers. As mentioned in the "ACC doesn't need your money" post, there is always a surplus once all fees have been paid, which previously has been used for personal purchases.

I may start learning HTML so I can help out.

After a short glance at an article, a low-end estimate for a custom website design is about ~$6000 or so. You would need about 300 people to donate $20 to make that happen. I don't think ACC is too far off of being able to raise that amount over a number of months, but it's hard to say. I'm mainly just throwing this number out there for anyone that's curious.

Edit: After looking at the HC page I've lost a bit of optimism in regard to that ability.

I think that in order to remake ACC by paid people, it's more likely you'll need $600.000 rather than $6000, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was more.

Tbh, I'm not very disappointed we're getting no Bell shop. I've always thought it would be an extra, not a necessity. Why don't we grasp this opportunity and go back to core business?

The definition of what is ACC's core business will depend on whom you ask. For me it's the following:

1. Be a forum where people can discuss AC
2. Provide excellent guides that cannot be found anywhere else
3. Provide a place where people can hang out and socialize
4. Offer catalog services
5. Have giveaways and other services, like villager cycling

Most of these points are in place. Point 2 still might need some work. But now that our efforts aren't needed for getting the Bell shop running, there will be more time for people to work on guides. I'm willing to help in that respect.

There's one other thing I'd like to say, which is that attracting paid people to work on this website, is a bad idea isn't such a good idea. This would mean that some people would get paid and some people wouldn't, for doing the same work. And what if you start paying Devs? Are you also going to pay the ModMins, the Researchers and the Scouts? IMO, this website can only be run fairly by either all volunteers, or by paying the entire staff. If you can construct a business model in which that last option pays off, good for you!

Oh, and one other last remark: please keep going with the Bell ads! I love collecting them and it gives me a thrill when surfing on here, especially when the Jackpot is high. I don't really care there's nothing I can do with them, it's just nice seeing the number increase.

As someone who was on the SPT, I know first hand that there were proposed changes to the way that ACC makes money that I think would have increased the site's income.  I'm not going to share any more details than that, if Jader wants to go into more detail he can.

It's a really tough situation.  First, to anyone saying that we should hire developers: it isn't that easy.  Developers cost a lot of money.  Even though a lot of people have donated and a lot of ads have been displayed, there isn't a lot of money.  The only reason that any developer would be willing to work for free would be for them to really support what they are working for or to expect some sort of career development.  If people aren't already on ACC, they won't qualify for the first one.  ACC is a fairly big site, but it's not big enough that someone would be willing to work for free to build up their portfolio.  No one outside of ACC will be willing to work for free and there isn't enough money to hire people.

I've said this before, but I think it's important enough to say it again - we need to build a social media presence.  The original plan was to wait for the bell shop to come out and then start out on social media promoting that, but we can't wait for that.  We need to do stuff on social media right now.  We already have a lot of original content, and we should be making more (whether that comes from staff members writing official guides or just regular members making insightful posts or sharing pictures).  If we have something cool, we should be promoting it on twitter, facebook, instagram, google+, tumblr, snapchat, reddit, and whatever other sites people use.  The way people use the internet has changed drastically over the past few years.  People use sites like I mentioned to find content, and possibly if they find good content, they keep coming back to the sites they find there.  The age where people will use google to search for Animal Crossing content is over.  Now, people will use their site of choice and look for AC content there.  As of now, we don't have any, so people don't have a good way of finding us.

If we want to grow, we need to have someone (either researchers or a new staff position) go through ACC and find good content.  This can be guides, images, discussions, or whatever.  Heck, they don't even need to search for it, we could have a sticky thread for people to post content they liked to be considered for ACC's social media.  The people who do this then need to find some of the better content and regularly promote it on twitter.  We talk all the time about how we don't have enough programmers on the site who are willing to help.  But do you know who we have?  I bet we have a bunch of business majors/marketing majors here who would be more than willing to help coordinate and run a social media plan to promote the site.  Heck, even if we don't want to do that much and create a new team, I'm sure the researchers would be able to do a good job of the same thing.

I'll probably make a seperate thread because this isn't that directly related to the bell shop, but this would be awesome for ACC.  We've been talking for the past few years about how much the bell shop will help get members interested.  Well, we still don't have a bell shop.  But do you know what we do have?  We have awesome guides.  We have awesome users who run giveaways.  We have awesome users who come up with interesting discussions.  We have awesome users who take pictures in their game.  If we focus on fostering, improving, and promoting what we have, we'll attract new users.

If you don't mind me asking, as I know ACC's code is old (it's from 2002), will there ever be a day that ACC has new code? It's just that, just being honest, this site looks dated. I don't mind being on a dated-looking site, but I was just wondering if anything could be done to make it be, well, more modern-looking.

I like the look of the site, maybe that dates me.

If the site skin was updated, I hope it would stay with the AC theme, like the avatars, emotes, and the holiday and seasonal themes.  It's what makes it unique and great about the site.

I think we should concentrate on our guides, the giveways, and all the great services and people here at ACC. If we get the word out with social media, I hope that will bring more people here.

There is a plan somewhere out there for ACC 2.0.  At this point, I don't know how it can get done because it would be way more work than the bell shop, which obviously didn't work out.  So yes, there are plans for it, but I'd be surprised if it came out any time in the next 5 years.

I think that the bell shop will never come out. We would be lucky enough if the rewrite of the site came out before the site closes. I mean, I've seen tons of video game sites go down. We are extremely lucky this site is active at all. I think the best options would be to make the bell shop a completely different site like someone else said before, or to get rid of the bell ad feature completely. Lets face it, we already knew that the bell shop wasn't coming "soon", but its probably coming never.

hm i vaguely recall discussing this months back in the VYO thread; not too surprised, and i'll reiterate what i voiced originally: focusing so much effort on the Bell Shop was/is pretty useless. i'm glad that, given the tone of the announcement, focus will be redirected towards rewriting the code of the website. that's progress right there, some that will be beneficial in the long-run.

are the one thing that I enjoy most about the site.
