They will have a green dot underneath their profile where it says last active.

Like that! If you add them as a buddy it'll show up on the top left hand side bar with the same green ball shing that they are active

do you mean on acc or on your 3ds? on your 3ds a orange light will blink on the right side on your 3ds when a friend comes online.

That only works if you've made them a best friend. You can also check the Friends list at the top where the little orange happy face is. Everyone who is online will be highlighted there.

Yeah, it's a shame they closed the Spot Pass that would allow you to send messages to other players because some nasty people thought it was funny to send unacceptable content to other players. There are always spoilers wherever we go. I really miss being able to write little messages to my friends.
