Everyone knows the clerk at the Able Sisters. But I have a hypothesis that Mabel was a kind of thinly-veiled reference to Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sonic the Hedgehog is, of course, older than Animal Crossing by almost a decade, and in the late ninties and early 2000's, Sega and Nintendo were then in ferocious console wars with each other. Perhaps Mabel being a blue hedgehog was intended as an inside joke of a developer, or something to that extent.

Any thoughts on this?

I knew I read somewhere that people thought she looked like Sonic. That's why I like the other Able Sisters more than her. Sable is my favorite If this didn't happen... would she be a different color? WOULD SHE EVEN EXIST??? Man, I'm thinking about this too much.

I do see what you're getting at though.

Would she exist? That's a fair question. But then, if Sonic didn't exist, the console wars wouldn't have been so decisive, and gaming probably wouldn't be as big as it is.

Which is a scary thought. Without the war AC probably wouldn't exist and I have no idea where I'd be right now.
