The premise of the game is to complete a series of preset scenarios by successfully building and maintaining amusement parks through business ownership as a theme park entrepreneur. The key to any park is building a large amount and diverse range of rides for the visitors. Players can choose from dozens of roller coaster types and can also build log flumes, carousels, bumper cars, haunted houses, go karts, ferris wheels and swinging ships, among other rides. The intensity and type of rides must be balanced, as visitors' preferences vary significantly from person to person. For example, some guests prefer exciting rides and have high nausea tolerance levels, while other guests are just the opposite.

Park maintenance is important to keeping visitors satisfied. The player may hire handymen to sweep paths, empty garbage cans, water flowers and mow lawns; mechanics to inspect and fix rides; security guards to prevent vandalism within the park; and entertainers to make the guests feel happier. The player must also balance his/her budget by managing the park staff and ride operation costs, as well as setting prices for park entry, rides, and food items.

A screenshot showing a log flume.
The geography and landscaping of the park can be modified, allowing the player to lower/raise terrain and add water to improve the park's attractiveness, as well as to allow rides to fit into their surroundings more easily. Tracked rides (such as roller coasters) and pathways may be constructed underground, either partially or entirely. Players must also balance the needs of the visitors by strategically placing food stalls, concession stands, bathrooms, and information kiosks. Pathways must be added to connect the attractions and must be done efficiently so that the visitors do not get lost and become unhappy. If there is no pathway leading from the exit of a ride to the park's main pathway, the guests will wander around until they find a pathway. Unless they are saved by the player, guests may also drown if the exit is placed over water without a pathway. They can also disappear if the exit is placed underground and has no underground pathway leading from it.

Adding items such as garbage cans, benches, lights, and various thematic elements and forms of architecture will help improve the visual quality of the park. Not only can this be done to the player's discretion or desire, placement of these items also pleases park guests and increases the park's approval rating. Garbage cans and benches also serve practical purposes; for example, guests can rest on benches after strenuous rides, reducing their risk of vomiting on the paths.

The player also has the option of building their own roller coaster designs as well as other rides by laying out individual track pieces, choosing the direction, height, and steepness, and adding such elements as zero g rolls, corkscrews, vertical loops, and even on-ride photos, using a tile-based construction system. Custom-designed roller coasters and thrill rides must be designed carefully so that the ratings are within the desire of the guests (i.e.: the excitement ratings should be as high, and the intensity and nausea ratings should be as low, as possible). The rides must be designed and operated to minimize the risk of a crash, as well. It is advisable to hire mechanics that can repair broken rides and inspect them to minimize their malfunction. Continuous, closed circuit coasters that use multiple vehicles are susceptible to a collision in the event of a station brakes failure. If one vehicle strikes another on-track at high speed, the colliding vehicle or train will be destroyed instantly. Open circuit and special kinds of roller coasters run the risk of the vehicle(s) flying off the tracks and crashing if designed improperly. If a vehicle on a ride crashes, any guests within will be killed. Ride crashes that kill guests will drastically decrease the park rating, which is detrimental to your objective. A ride that remains unmodified following a crash can cause the guests to turn it down in fear for their life.

There are 21 scenarios included with RollerCoaster Tycoon, as well as 30 more in the Corkscrew Follies expansion pack, and another 30 in the Loopy Landscapes expansion pack, totaling to 81 scenarios if the whole set is installed. There are also 3 promotional scenarios released with magazines and 11 official scenarios created by Hasbro for competitions, as well as 3 real amusement parks and 1 extra park that are available in the Deluxe edition. Some scenarios afford the player empty tracts of land on which to build the park from scratch, but most place the player in control of an operational park that is usually underdeveloped, dilapidated, or suffering from poor planning. If the player deems the park undersized for his needs or desires, they may be able to purchase land for the park, or construction rights allowing them to build on top of the land (but not directly on it).

To complete a scenario and unlock a new one, a certain objective must be met by the player. For most scenarios, the objective is to either have a minimum number of guests, or build the park up to a certain value, by the scenario's deadline of one to four years. Years in the game are only eight months long; from the start of March to the end of October (mirroring the time of year in which real-life theme parks located in the northern hemisphere operate). Objectives in a scenario can generally be achieved by building your park up and maintaining it well. Scenarios in the Loopy Landscapes expansion pack are usually unique and contain winning conditions that are extremely different from those in the rest of the game.

There is also a built-in tutorial that can be accessed from the main menu. It takes place in Forest Frontiers, the first scenario. It shows the player how to build a carousel, open the amusement park, build a custom roller coaster, hire a mechanic, and exit the game. The player can take control of the tutorial and play it as a normal game at any time by clicking or pressing a keyboard button.

Guests[edit]
Guests are the visitors to the amusement park. They have specific tastes in rides, such as rides with an intensity rating "above 4" or "between 2 and 6". Their nausea tolerance levels vary from "none" to "high". Guests have ID numbers instead of names (e.g. "Guest 212"). There is an optional feature that comes with the expansion packs which gives the guests random names instead of ID numbers. Or, each guest can be renamed individually by the player. Giving guests specific names can unlock Easter eggs and/or cheats. Players can choose to track certain guests. Guests only vary in clothing colors and otherwise look exactly the same. Each visitor brings a variable amount of money with them into the park. Guests will pay to enter the amusement park if there is an entrance fee, as long as they have enough money. Guests have opinions about rides, the park's scenery, and what they need at a certain time.

Do you own the game? I do and it's awesome.

I love Roller Coaster Tycoon!

I only have and play RCT2 and RCT3 though.

I know they are making a new one for this year called "Roller Coaster Tycoon World" but I'm a little skeptical about it...but the kid in me is still excited!

I've been playing a lot of RCT2 though recently.

RCT2 was my life when I was like, 8. Played on Six Flags: Magic Mountain for hours until I ran out of space or money. That was totally the closest thing to a sandbox on that game.

They are coming out with Roller Coaster Tycoon World! I can't wait =D

I have RCT 1 2 and 3.

I play 3 more then the others because I like the handling of the controls. In the 90s this was my go-to game along with Sims.

To this day, I play RCT and I don't see me stopping it anytime soon. =D

I'm pretty sure I played the second game when I was about eight. I didn't really know how to play well, but it occupied a lot of my time. A lot of my guests drowned. Shortly after, I lost the game and never found it.

Yeah when I was younger my imagination ran wild with this game. I remember that I actually made an exact recreation of the rollercoaster Montu and rebranded it for my best park (I called it Fantasia Land) and reskinned it as a dark orange then called it Phoenix. I also had my duelling wooden rollercoasters called Blizzard and Avalanche as well as a log flume which always had a really long queue.

I was so proud of that park.

I got the RCT Deluxe on steam while it was on sale. I actually did good compared to my previous performance even though my strategy was just all about advertising the park.

Loopy Landscapes was pretty much challenging even though you can't set the park entrance fee to make money so apparently about that expansion is all about raising the stakes by increasing the ride fees by .50 or doubling the original price.

Well GOG and steam are the only ones that has RCT1 DX and RCT2.

I've pulled many close calls on certain scenarios, but mostly it came from 2 scenarios on loopy landscapes expansion which are the Iceberg islands and Crater Lake. I can't even make that much money due to not putting an entrance fee.

I got RCT3 Platinum. I have a few parks, and here are some of my most popular ones:
- Disneyland Madrid (Madrid, Spain)
- Florida Funland (Orlando, Florida)
- Six Flags Paradise Florida (Winter Haven, Florida)
Well, those are my 3 favorite parks I made. I also have 2 death parks and an unfinished water park.

I need to play RCT3 again sometime. Sandbox mode was always my favorite part of it, of course, I'd never be satisfied with it. All my guests would leave a mess and complain about it when the trashcan was right there.

Always wondered, how do you get some of your rides more attention? I've built a few, like the haunted mansion and the go-karts, but guests always ignore them. After putting a lot of effort into scenery and all that (especially for the haunted mansion) I'd like to see the queue full(er).

RCT3 platinum is about $20 on steam and on GOG if you guys asked me.

How do rides get more attention? well it's all about excitement rating and the ride fees. you can't charge the ride fee that high. As for excitement rating, some rides excitement ratings are fixed and can be adjusted by placing Sceneries like trees and fountain, but it'll build up the excitement rating by .1 or so. if you're building the ride underground, then the excitement rating goes up.

Usually Go-Karts are popular, but if you're making a go-kart track, then you need to put on the continuous circuit mode without letting your guests leaving the queue paths and making more money than using race mode.

As of roller coasters go, you wanna design carefully that's not too intense so you gotta place in some brakes just to be safe like about 9mph or lower. if you're making wooden roller coaster, then you may want to use water splash to reduce speed, but you need to get enough velocity to make it to the station. Always add on-ride photo section if you want more money

For Ride fees, I normally set them for $1 for certain gentle and thrill rides, but as rides age and ppl want something more thrilling than that ride and/or not paying that much to ride so you may wanna either replace the ride and set the ride fee to the same or lower the cost from the existing ride you just built.

placing sceneries such as trees and fountains for a in-door ride like the haunted house, 3D cinema, and motion simulator doesn't affect the excitement rating.

Well, that was the kicker for me. I'd build rides underground sometimes, like one of my go-kart tracks for a spooky section I was building. They still didn't go. In RCT 2, I've no doubt it would have been full to busting. And I had a load of scenery built around my haunted mansion (the kind you lay the track out for, not the stand-alone building). Of course, it was a bit far along the track, but quite a few peeps did pass by it. I guess the old saying, build it and they will come doesn't apply.

Still, I had fun building my parks, and sometime I'll build again.

There was something else that annoyed me a bit though about RCT 3. Why did they have to get rid of the maze, funnel cake, and popcorn stalls? The latter two especially since those are pretty much theme park staples. And I just liked building mazes for the guests.

That's a weird part because if you didn't build the queue line for the go-karts, then probably that explains. if not then i don't know the problems. no guests shouldn't be resisting riding the go-karts except for the rainy weathers.

No, I made sure to put the queue line in, and I don't get a lot of rainy weather in sandbox mode either. It's just really strange. I mean yeah, some rides aren't real popular, but it also surprises me just what rides get the attention, even among gentle tracked rides. Like my haunted mansion was pretty much dead, but I put in a helicopter ride or even a car ride - full lines.

Anyway, just for my own curiosity, what's everyone's favorite kind of coaster to build? For me, it's hard to choose, although I am pretty fond of the looping and corkscrew coasters.

The roller coasters I build in RCT1 are Wooden, Steel, Suspended, Flying, Steel Twister, Corkscrew, Suspended Looping, and Heartline Twister roller coasters.

Roller Coasters may be tricky to build and to go around with, but it can't have ultra-extreme on intensity rating although there will be some scenarios that will accept extreme or ultra-extreme intensity rating.

I still have Roller Coaster Tycoon the original and the 2nd one as well from since I was 5 years old o-o
I actually started playing it again yesterday

I used to enjoy the 2nd one more because you could choose to have no money and build your own map before you use it... but that kinda got old and now I like having the money and a pre-designed map.

"I used to enjoy the 2nd one more because you could choose to have no money and build your own map before you use it"
That was me for sure. I never did get the knack of making money, especially since all the games were scenarios. When I first got RCT2, I was expecting something like Zoo Tycoon, with scenarios and a free-form mode. I think that's why I like RCT3 a bit better, since I can just build.
