This game looks very fun! I doubt if I'll be picking it up on release date though. If  more information is released about it, then I might get it on release!

I looked at my friend's Japanese 3DS, luckily we didn't have to go through the rigamarole of setting up a NNID. Did a search on Miiverse for Fantasy Life in English and in Japanese, nothing. Scanned through all the 3DS games communities, nothing.

...There is no Miiverse community for Fantasy Life.

"Also, good news for importers, apparently the Link! Update is now FREE on the eShop for the original game."
So did not need to know that. I made the mistake of looking at some of the E3 trailers, and it turns out there are quite a few games I'm interested in that are on the horizon. I really don't want to drop upwards of $100 for this game (and commandeering my friend's Japanese 3DS and setting up a Japanese NNID). Just a few months more! I've held back for this long, just a few months more...

Hopefully we'll get a Fantasy Life section on Miiverse when it comes out here. Maybe they had one in Japan but took it down as the game is a few years old? I don't really know how Miiverse works so I don't know if they can even take stuff down but yeah...

In Europe we have exactly 3 months to wait for Fantasy Life!

Nah, I don't think that's how it works. There's still a community for Ocarina of Time and a lot of older games (names escape me, but I know they're way older than FL). There isn't a community for every game, sadly, and I don't know how they decide which games get a community. My guess is Nintendo didn't publish in Japan.

"Yes, just a few months more, you can do this!"
Thanks for the support! I've been diligent about avoiding the Japanese game store and the gaming magazines in the bookstores.

Now that is a golden schedule. My guess is you will be extremely sleep-deprived, possibly malnourished and stinking to high heaven. Which is where you'll likely be.

Okay, I really don't know how they select which games get a Miiverse community. I just remembered seeing Bravely Default For the Sequel on there, and I'm fairly confident that was released in Japan by Square Enix. Considering how popular this game is, I really do wonder why there isn't a community, and hope they'll create one when it's released in the West.

Since there's a release date, I may as well pre-order it next time I go to Gamestop. That and all the other games that have suddenly produced release dates way earlier than I expected.

We'll most likely get a Miiverse community when it releases, every new game seems to be getting their own, and Nicalis got some of their older games added to Miiverse too.

I haven't bought many game guides, but if there's one released, I'll probably get it, because it looks like there's so much things to do, that I'd get lost easily. And forget what I'm doing.

Oh, heck I wish you hadn't reminded me about game guides! ...I have to check if I can order a Japanese game guide. Not much more expensive than an American one, way better quality and way fewer mistakes.

I found one of my magazines with Fantasy Life! It has the basic facts, an interview (which I don't read because my eyes just glaze over with walls of Japanese text), and best of all an awesome world map poster! Urgh, trying not to count the days...

Oh that's sweet. Especially the world poster!

Link doesn't work... Thanks, but don't worry about it, I'll do a bit of research later and pop over to the Japanese bookstore. If I remember rightly, Amazon.co.jp doesn't ship overseas. And if I choose oversea shipping, the guide should only be $25-$30. I'll have to wait like a month and a half, but well, game's not out here for a few months anyway.

*edit: Curse you, Amazon.co.jp!!! FL's on sale for only 1,670 yen... If they shipped to the US it wouldn't be more than $30 with shipping! And the version with the mini soundtrack's only 2,780 yen...

*edit2: Wow, that's new! They DO ship to the US! And it'd be 800 yen per order plus 1,000 yen per kilogram. But will they ship games? I know Amazon.co.uk doesn't ship games overseas. Hmm...

Just wait, you can do it!

But the one with the mini soundtrack does sound cool.
I haven't ordered anything from a foreign Amazon before, so I'm not sure, sorry.

How old is the interview by the way? Is it true that earlier in the games development, there were 20 planned life's, instead of the current 12? Someone pointed out on reddit, that all 20 jobs are featured in the English reveal trailer too.

Yes, yes, mustn't go overboard, must think of being a good friend and NOT snatching his Japanese system. Thank you for being both tempter and voice of reason!

The magazine's Weekly Famitsuu, and since I've never bought one before or since, I'm guessing that row of numbers means it's the January 3, 10 and 17 of 2013 issue. Not really weekly...

Wall o' text is making me glaze over already, but a quick scan doesn't show that info. They're saying it's really supposed to be an MMORPG-like game. ...Yet Link! wasn't released until later. Life bar on trees and ores, like they showed in the trailer, mini soundtrack with the ending theme (drool...). I'll look it over properly later, see if there's any interesting info.

Riesz: We're all in this together, heh. Sweet, hope you find some good stuff.

Leo0820 over at GameFaqs really put a lot of work into finding out what StreetPass does, sounds pretty cool:
"According to the Japanese Fantasy Life wiki, you can assign an item to give to other players when you streetpass them. Players will appear in a part of the main town, and you can talk to them and they'll give you the item the player has assigned. You can register up to 30 streetpasses but only 10 players will appear in your town.

And it says, since the item doesn't disappear from your inventory when you assign it, it's suggested you pass on something rare or really useful. "
Also, I've read that Rune Factory 4 is the closest to how Fantasy Life will play like. I haven't played any Rune Factory game before though, so I don't know what to expect.

I looked over the interview, bearing in mind my tendency to glaze and the fact that there are a few bits I couldn't translate because I'm not familiar with that kanji. No helpful hiragana to cling onto in the hopes of looking it up, either.

The gist of it is they started working on it 3 years ago, which probably works out to 2009 or so. It took them a long time to work on the long story, by which point they decided to switch from 2D to 3D. They were inspired to make an MMORPG-like game that can be enjoyed single-player, and cited The Elder Scrolls and Fable. At the time, you could only use local play to form a party of three, but for those who prefer to play single-player or are unable to connect with others, there are over 50 recruitable NPCs.

They did mention streetpassing and items. Apparently you can name items crafted by creative Lifes and pass on the item with the custom name. Reminds me of Bravely Default, where you can rename special abilities which shows when you streetpass.

Then they started bragging that they got Yoshitaka Amano to do illustrations and Nobuo Uematsu to do music. This alone took up two columns.

And I understand why they compare to Rune Factory 4 as there are a lot of similarities. I'm sure they did a much, much better job, though, since RF4 is one of the most poorly planned games in the franchise. (Mini rant: took only about 50 game days to complete the first two 'arcs', and after playing another couple weeks with no sign of the final arc, I looked it up. Apparently, the final arc is only unlocked by a completely random sub-event that can take over a game year to appear. There're 120 days in a game year. )

Anyway, the RF series is Harvest Moon with monsters. I've played all of them and 3 for the DS is my favorite. Farming, fighting, crafting, magic, taming. I just wish it wasn't so sanitized. 'Oh, don't worry, the your weapons and tools are coated with magic so the monsters return to where they came from!' No, no. They're dead. See? This one dropped a skull. ...Which I can now use to craft stuff!

Just a question, why is Fantasy Life releasing in Europe first? Not that it's a bad thing, (I live in US) but don't games usually release in U.S. like 10 days before Europe?

I think Level-5 games might do better in Europe as we've had most of their recent games earlier. For example, we got Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright in March whereas America isn't getting it until August. Professor Layton 6 came out in Europe Nov 2013, America Feb 2014. & we've had nine Inazuma Eleven games with physical & digital releases whereas America has had one digital only.

mejjos: You're welcome! I forgot to add that the reason they were inspired to make an MMORPG-like game is because they're of the view that Japan does turn-based RPG and that the Japanese would like to play action-based like foreigners do. It's true that Japan does a lot of turn-based stuff, but there are action-based games that do quite well, like the Rune Factory and Secret of Mana games.

Guh, I think I missed the Japan Expo in L.A. I usually see a few commercials for it, but I haven't really been paying attention lately. Lucky Europeans!

Sonnic: Y'all are very lucky indeed in Europe. Level 5 is probably my favorite right now. However, this does somewhat redresses the balance since the US does usually get things first. Yet nearly a month ahead does make me hate y'all just a little bit.

Yeah I think I've read about that, Japan wanting to make games that foreigners like. Pretty interesting.

What, there's a Japan Expo in L.A.? Never heard about it lol. The Japan Expo in Paris ended on the 6th, and I haven't seen any of the games mentioned, especially Fantasy Life, in any news outlets. So nothing new was announced probably.

I don't know if I'm asking this right, but since this a just a localization/translation(?) is this game Gold yet? I don't really know what the term 'Gold' means either, but I kind of have an idea of what is though

Edit*: Here's a photo I found on twitter, most likely from Japan Expo in Paris, of two unused demo units

Edit*2: Was looking through GameFaqs, and I never knew this before, but there's DLC available for purchase. There's also free DLC that you can get from the post office like in Animal Crossing :3
"I must confess I bought 2 items from DLC. Two rings, one that makes the SP gauge fill much faster (so you don't need to wait a lot or use items when fighting monsters/mining/etc.) and another that makes 2 items appear from chests instead one.

With the DLC you receive also "Gold Tokens", that can only be used very late in the game to obtain very powerful equipment/special mounts. Those Gold Tokens can be obtained by doing quests for your tenant at the end of the story, so they are not DLC exclusive."
"The Gold Pass (or something like that, can't remember offhand) was ~$5. It lets you use all facilities (Inns, Airships, Hair Salons, etc) for free.

My favorite DLC I bought was the Demon Mirror that lets your reset your stat points for free in your house. I just like the convenience of it."
"I remember there were also:

- Ring that recovers HP.
- Shoes that enhances experience (I think by 1.5x) only if you do the last blow (if any of your party members kill the monster you receive normal experience).
- Ring that makes running don't decrease SP.
- Many items that double Skill points, but must be bought for each class. So, for example, if you want to increase your Sword/Shield skill (Soldier class) and 2 handed swords skill (mercenary class), you must buy each item separately and equip the proper one when training a skill."

I like that some of the paid "DLC" can be obtained in-game without having to pay. Charging people to get things easier is preferable to hiding entire parts of the game behind a pay wall. I might pay for some of the DLC haircuts or something to show support for the game assuming I enjoy it as much as I'm expecting though.

mejjos: I think I'm confusing the Japan Expo with whatever that festival is they have in Little Tokyo. Yet at the same time I remember going to a small event in the Convention Center called Japan Expo (seriously small, couldn't have been more than 500 people).

Thanks for the info about DLCs! I didn't know either. Stopped myself looking at Fantasy Life long before Link! was released. (Still hurts...)

"Charging people to get things easier is preferable to hiding entire parts of the game behind a pay wall."
Amen to that! I have a lot of eshop credit that I've never used. I'm torn between splurging and getting things legitimately, even if it takes me months...
