My name is Tortimer. I am the Mayor of Animal Village, and I have a big secret. It all started when I got on that bus that would take me to Animal Village, where I was going to be mayor. But I didn't realize getting on that bus would change my life forever. For I am not a mayor, I am a captive.
"So lad, where ye be off to?"
"I am going to Animal Village, I am going to be mayor there."
The bus driver had a puzzled look on his face when he heard this.
"Mayor? Didn't ye hear of the last mayor who was in Animal Village?"
I didn't say anything to this. I didn't want to know, nor did I have any intention of hearing it. Instead of replying, I looked out of the window. My bag sat below my seat, and I reached down to get the book inside of it. "Here we are! This be the Animal Village bus stop!"
I stepped out of the bus and onto a concrete platform with a sign on it. A cat wearing an argyle sweater rushed up to me.
"Hey there!" he said "You must be Tortimer, our new mayor. My name is Rover." I didn't say anything. I was busy looking around town. Everything was perfect, almost animated. There were now leaves on the ground even though it was autumn, and none of the grass was dry or dying. There were no torn flowers, and all were in bloom. I could hardly believe my eyes.
"Well, follow me then." Rover said, bringing me out of my thoughts. "I welcome new folks and get them settled in around town. I take them to their area." The way he said area made me uneasy. I had felt kind of strange about this town since what the bus driver had said to me.
We went inside a big building with a clock on it. The bulletin board outside had a notice about the new mayor. That meant the whole town knew who I was and why I was here.
We walked inside the town hall, where there was a pelican waiting at a counter doing paperwork. When she heard the door open, she looked up. "Oh hello! You must be our new mayor. Your name is Tortimer, right?" I nodded. "Great. My name is Pelly."
She led me around the counter to my desk. There were several doors behind my desk. All of them had locks. Rover shut the short swinging door that led into my desk. "You will be staying here." he said as he gestured to the last door behind my desk. I had a bad feeling about this town.

Rover led me into the door he had pointed to before. Pelly looked sick and tried to tell me with her eyes that she was sorry. I tried to say it was okay.
The room behind the door had a thick, flowered carpet. The carpet was lush, but the room itself was small. In fact, it was tiny. "This is your home. As you pay your loans to Tom Nook, it will expand." In the room was a cardboard box with a lamp on it. That was it. How was I supposed to live here?
The door squeaked open suddenly the figure of a raccoon wearing an apron walked in. "My name is Tom Nook." is all he said at first. I looked at his big, brown eyes that stared at me. Suddenly, his eyes whipped to the window. "Good. No one is there. Time for my lecture." I was scared already.
"As I said, my name is Tom Nook. I rule the economy in this town, and it will stay that way. Do not try to steal from my store, you will be punished harshly." I had an idea of where this was going. "Just because you are the mayor, you do not have rule over me, or my store." He paused to let this sink in. Tom Nook walked towards the door, and left.
Rover took hold of the time to give me a lecture of his own.
"I hope you take what he says seriously. Tom Nook is no liar, and he has no mercy." he added in a mumble, "I learned that the hard way." Suddenly, I noticed a small bruise on his left ear that blended in perfectly with his fur. His face flushed red as he noticed me noticing it.
"How did Nook get here?" Rover sat back and told me the whole story.
(Rover's Story)
It was a cold, cloudy day. The wind blew through the trees and I heard Booker speaking to someone. The gate creaked open, and I heard footsteps patter on the cobblestones on the floor of the gate. I stood outside so I could welcome the visitor and do my job.
"Welcome to our town please-"
"Can it kitty cat." the raccoon said cutting me off. "I didn't come to visit, I came to stay. Now do some work for me and lead me to the town hall." I walked off and gestured for him to follow me. The raccoon walked in a way that showed so much pride I thought he could have been a royal. But I doubted that a royal would visit our small town.
When we got to the town hall. I opened the door for the raccoon to go inside. I followed him in. He swaggered up to the front desk and said. "My name is Tom Nook and I need space to set up my shop. I plan on having quite a large shop, so you might have to tear a few things down."
Pelly was speechless. She just nodded her head. He walked out the door to get his belongings.
(Real life)
"I think that is enough for now. I shouldn't have told you that much anyway..." He said nervously. "I'l leave you to get your things in order." He walked towards the door to leave. "Oh by the way." he added "welcome to Area 12."

I walked outside of my room. Pelly was standing at her desk, talking to Rover in hushed tones. I didn't want to interrupt, so I stood quietly. Pelly whipped around suddenly.
"Oh! Mr. Mayor! I didn't see you there! I am so sorry, please-"
"It is okay." I cut her off. "I didn't mean to interrupt. I was just going out to see the town." She looked at me nervously.
"Well, erm, I'm sorry sir but we have a policy preventing the mayors from leaving the town hall."
I looked at her like she was from outer space. She had a look that told me she was sorry, but I wasn't mad. I was okay with helping her with her work. After all, she didn't go out in the day either, and she was certainly fine.
"Well then! I can help you with some of your work. Is that okay?" I asked meaning it with all my heart.
"Oh! Well I guess I could use some help..." Rover had walked out of the building.
I sat down at the mahogany desk, and Pelly set some papers in front of me. "This is your mayoral paperwork. It will be reference to me when I need to fill in citizens of your decisions." She walked away and sat down to her own paperwork. The first animal walked in. It was a sheep with navy blue hair. She was wearing an orange plaid scarf.
"Hello Pelly! I came to check on the comments about the environment. You know my gardening club has been working hard!"
"Yes of course! I will be right with you Miss Eunice!" Pelly looked like she wanted to help Eunice as soon as possible. I just focused on my paperwork.
"Oh! Is the turtle back there the new mayor?" Eunice asked. Turtle? What turtle? I looked at my hands. They were turtle legs! I was officially freaked out! How did this happen! When I had gotten to town, all the animal people had seemed completely normal. No wonder! I had turned into one when I had gotten onto the bus! I tried to act like everything was fine. But I couldn't help it. I had to ask Pelly why I had turned into a turtle.
When Pelly was finished, I walked up to her calmly.
"Pelly, will you explain why I am a turtle please?!" I tried to say it calmly, but I think it came out urgent.
"Well, when you get on the bus, you turn in to an animal person. Didn't Kapp'n tell you that before you got on?" I just stared fuming at Kapp'n for not telling me. I would've turned back. I would've run far away from the bus that would take me to a village where I can't leave the town hall. A place where I was a turtle. "You will be turned back and sent back to your world when your term ends in 87 years."
There it was. The bomb that blew off my head. I would not be able to go outside for 87 years? Be a turtle for 87 years? Be stuck in an office for 87 years? Then, I fainted.

While I was unconscious, I had a strange dream. I was in a strange place with dim lights. A hippopotamus wearing long necklaces sat before me. She looked like a fortune teller.
"My name is Katrina. I have tapped into your dream to tell your future."
The scene changed. I was standing in front of a fountain. A girl wearing a purple had got off a bus that had just pulled up. She walked over to me.
"Oh! Did Home get a new fountain? I knew my funds would get put to good use!" she said to me. The girl looked like she was rich. She had red hair and was wearing it up in a bun. Her hat was broad brimmed and very fancy. It had lace, ribon, and fake flowers on it. She wore a dress that looked like a tuxedo made into a dress. She carried to pink shopping bags that said 'GracieGrace' on them.
"Isn't the GracieGrace winter collection just to die for? I just bought some of it today." she looked at me expectantly. Actually, she looked at the me I was watching. I seemed to be invisable. I watched the future me reply. I couldn't hear my future self speak.
In the future, my skin was crinkled and a dark shade of green. I wore a black top hat with a blue ribbon. All I did was stand there in front of the fountain. It didn't look like I did anything important in this town anymore. It didn't help that I only got to go outside on special events and stand wherever the event was taking place.
When it got dark, I followed myself back into the town hall. When I walked inside, Pelly didn't even look at me. The scene changed again, and I saw myself in Nooks.
"Just give me the card to your account!!" Nook was shouting. He had locked the doors of his shop, trapping the future me inside.
"Alright, take this." the future me said feebly. He rummaged around in his pockets and pulled out a small gold card that said: 'ABD Card Issued to: Tortimer (Mayor)' Nook grabbed it out of his hands and opened large door on the wall. Inside was a machine that said:
"Welcome to the Bank on Nintendo Home Branch, Automatic Bell Dispenser, or ABD. How may I help you?"
Nook slid the golden card into a slot in the machine, typed in a very large number, and put a bag under another slot in the machine. Tons of bells rushed out.
I woke up with a terrible realization. Nook was a criminal.

It was a sunny day. I couldn't find much more information on the weather than that, because I was not allowed outside. I was still pondering what I had just seen. I looked around my room. It was a little bigger, and I had a sofa, a desk, and a bed. It had become bigger overnight, because I had been paying Nook on his visits to the town hall. Apparently, the room belonged to him. I sat at my desk and dipped my quill into a pot of navy blue ink.
Dear Pelly, I saw something in a dream and I have a terrible suspicion. I believe that Tom Nook is a criminal and that he is dangerous. I am aware that this letter will put us both in danger, but I also know that Nook will do things that we would not dream of doing. Have you heard of a person named Katrina? She spoke to me in my dream and told me she would show me my future. I saw an older version of myself in Nook's shop, and Nook taking a large sum of money out of my bank account. I would like to learn more about Nook's back story. Rover has told me a bit, but I would like to know more.
Sincerely, Tortimer
I closed the letter with my very own mayoral seal. The seal was only for the mayor to use, and it had the Town Crest on it. (You may now know it as Tortimer's Pride) My wax seal was blue and it had a series of lines on it making a very beautiful pattern. I signed my name on the back and set it on Pelly's desk. She was at the museum at the town staff meeting. I thought I should have gone too, because I was the mayor, but Pelly seemed very worried about me coming.
When she got back, I was in my room, doing some of the large stack of paperwork I had been given that day. I preferred to work at the desk in my room instead of the desk in the main office. I liked the peace, quiet, and extra paper in my own room.
I walked outside and sat down at my desk. I waited for a customer to come in. I always enjoyed seeing the different people in my village come and go. I loved watching how they act on one day or another. But before anyone could come in, Pelly set the 'Come back later!' sign on her desk and sat in the chair across from mine. No one had used that chair before. It just sat there, empty and cold. I didn't need it, probably because I had no one to meet with.
"I want to talk to you about the letter you wrote." she said "Listen, I can't confirm any of the things you saw in the dream. I can't confirm anything Katrina said. All I know is that all of the town staff is scared of Nook, and that Katrina is usually correct, if not very, very accurate. Just listen to the story I have to tell and make your predictions."
I sat back, and listened
(Pelly's story)
A raccoon swaggered up to my desk.
"The name is Tomas Nookington, but call me Tom Nook. I am here to open up shop in this town, so clear me a spot on the busy side of town, where there are a lot of residents. I require a pretty big space too, so you might need to clear some stuff out." I was so shocked he had the courage to come up to me and make a request that I was not sure that I could carry out.
"I'm sorry sir, I need to talk to the mayor before I-"
"Listen here. I'm the law around here and I made a request, jump to it. When I say something, I want people to do it as fast as possible!"
I just nodded, in even more shock. Tom Nook swaggered out the door. I could see that a mansion had been built in almost no time to the far east of the town hall. It had a garden, a flag, and a small grove of orange trees around it. He was already filthy rich.
(Real life)
I was shocked by the story. How could Nook just walk into town one day, build a mansion, request a large piece of land for his store and not ask about payment, then say he is taking over the town. No wonder the chair in front of me was empty. One thing was for sure, Nook should not have power much longer.
A note from Tortimer
As you can see, I am collecting a story from many of the people who work in the town. They may seem pointless right now, but they will all come together at the end, I promise. Thank you for having interest in my story. But here is a warning, it may be very dangerous in some specific places.

The next morning when I woke up there was a knock on the door. I opened it up and it was Pelly standing outside my door. For the first time, I noticed the color of her eyes. Her eyes were almost metallic. They had a warmth in them. I looked into her eyes and I saw emotion. Most of the emotion I saw in her eyes was sadness. I could tell she had lost something important to her. The other thing I saw was hope. I felt as if I was seeing through Pelly's eyes. I felt as if I was seeing into her soul. A tear trickled down my cheek. I now knew what she had lost.
It had been a cold, brisk winter day. The snow crunched underfoot as a pure white pelican walked towards a large, yellow bus that had just pulled up.
"Phyllis! Your here!" The pelican rushed towards a human girl who was wearing a bright pink dress. She had on red lipstick and purple eye shadow.
"Who are you?" The girl asked "I came to see my sister Pelly."
"B-but it is me. I was turned into a pelican. You d-don't remember me?" tears were starting to spill down Pelly's face.
"AHHH!!! Pelly, you were turned into an animal-human! I'm not going to have people know you are my sister! Goodbye Pelly." The girl got back into her seat and the bus drove off. Tears were now quickly falling onto the ground like rain. Pelly cried by the side of the road. Her own family had abandoned her.
(Real life)
I could see tears streaming down Pelly's face in the memory of it.
"I'm sorry." I whispered
