No-one wants to leave so soon, but someone has to... Who will it be? It’s week 1 of the 2013 fanfic competition, with what could be the biggest hype and build-up we’ve had so far... Computerfan: Hello! Here we are, at week 1! Believe it or not, ignoring last year... This has actually been our shortest audition stage and stage 2... Ever. 2009, for example... First started in February, and the competition began... September/October. This year, it started in June and competition began August. That’s a record! Causes a problem, though, because I’ve realised now that I probably won’t get chance to do a Halloween challenge OR Christmas challenge. Why can’t there be decent summer holidays? I’ll work it out. Anyway... I’m actually really impressed with the voting so far. I mean, seriously... I can’t get over how well this year is going. I honestly thought the fanfic board was dead forever, yet we’re here with a decent final 24 and lots of votes. Also, I have more individual voters than... ever, really. I’m telling you now that we don’t have anyone shooting ahead. The voting is ALL very similar, that it’s a miracle we got only a bottom two.
But... I’m impressed. I’m happy. You’ve all been voting, and we have our first bottom two. Here’s how it’s gonna work... When I announce you through, the interviews you answered for fordn1 plus your extract will be posted afterwards. If people like the look of your story, they can go to your thread to read more. I used to do a show on Saturday, and then results Sunday... But I work every alternate weekend and it just wouldn’t work. But let’s get to it... Ready for the contestants?
[The audience cheer, as the theme music plays. The far left doors open, and Dan enters the stage with the six strawberries.]
Alright! Let’s get this show on the road. To those of you new to the competition, and forgotten how it works... Well, the results show... It’s a very tense event. You’re all at risk of enduring a few days torture waiting to see if you’re through. I will first, tonight, announce 21 contestants definitely through. We will then be left with the bottom tie plus a contestant put there at complete random. The one at random will be announced the next day, and them being in that position is nothing to do with how many votes they have. The judges will then take it in turns to choose from the bottom two. The results are always in no particular order, and none of you will EVER know your position until you’re eliminated or win.
Also... I’m sorry to say, but I am lazy. And I honestly don’t have time to go through every extract given to me and find all italics and such. I forgot to mention this before, but please when giving extracts in future, make it so the coding appears in your extract. It’s a lot less work for you to do that than me. I’m sorry if it appears lazy, but, well, deal with it. (To have the coding appear, do this without the spacings: [ i ] [ spoiler ] [ /spoiler ] #TEXT# [ /i ]).
Please note that contestants who didn’t give an interview or extract just won’t have it mentioned. * How do you feel about making the final 24? It feels really great, especially with all these talented writers around me. To be honest I really thought I wasn't going to make it because I really don't feel like my writing is up to par and there's some real competition this year. I can only hope I get I little further.
* What position are you aiming for? 17, one place better than my best. Even though I was a lot younger then, the competition is probably has better writers now so I feel the goal's appropriate.
* How do you feel about being in the group you are in? Dude, it's Vanilla, how much better can you get.
* Do you feel you will be able to keep up with entry deadlines? I really hope so, I just hate that I'm back at school now and unable to spend as much time online. Essay's are a pain in the butt.
* Is there anything else you would like to add? Good luck everyone! *coughvoteformecough*
-- They arrived at the station close to 4pm. A hot breeze blew against their skin. Close by, tin shoes clinked on the pavement. Three aged suitcases were stacked between them. The weather started to sour as the sun cuddled between the hills. Alice wore four layers of scratchy sweaters, the most visible had a wonky ’A’ stitched on. The clinking shoes faded away as the wind become unsettled. Alice looked at the bags; in that moment they looked as defeated as she felt.
"You don't have to go you know," said her mother.
"I'll be fine mum. I'll write" Her mother forced a smile.
"You better"
"You won't even notice I've gone". She immediately regretted saying it. Without Alice, her mother would be alone in an uncomfortably empty house for the first time.
"...I just can't believe my little girl is all grown up" Alice gulped. To her relief a train sounded in the distance. Her mum blubbered, "Oh...well c-come back soon, Alice"
"I'll be fine mum. I'll visit" The railways screeched. A glossy red steam engine towered over them, blocking the sun.
"See you... soon,” Said her mother as she hugged Alice so close she could smell her mother’s lipstick.
"Goodbye, Mum"
Before she could reach out for another embrace Alice hopped next to the carriage door. She stepped inside, lugging her suitcases behind her. The carriage was ridden with leather seats lined with timber that smelled of mothballs. She took a window seat.

-- Had Claver really stolen this car? Was he really a theif?
He pulled himself out from under the dashboard and adjusted his seat. “Alright,” Claver said excitedly, heaving a sigh of effort. “Ready?” He smiled exuberantly at me, and I gave an uneasy grin in return—a smile that accidentally showed nothing but my insecurity about this entire situation. Claver frowned. “Aw, c’mon man. This is gonna be great! Chin up.”
The enthusiasm in my nodding far overcompensated for the uneasiness that lingered on my face. As we took off down the main road, I quickly turned away to stare out the windshield. No, I thought. No, Claver can't be a thief. It's not possible. There's a perfectly good explanation for this, I'm sure... I turned again to face my brother, all my questions suspended in mid-air. My mouth hung open, lungs poised for speech… but no words came out. With what I saw in him at that moment, I found I didn’t have the nerve to bring it up. I looked on in slight shock, actually… He seemed genuinely happy. What was he smiling about? As we drove along, Claver looked out over the road with a beaming expression—his eyes shined with cheerfulness, and a quirky side-ways grin adorned his face. Of course, I don’t know what true happiness is—I’m not sure anyone does—but I imagine what I was seeing came fairly close. I wish I understood what it was that made him so cheerful in that moment, because I’d never seen him with such an expression in my whole life. “Oh—! Hey, go in the glove box for me, would you?” Claver asked. “I think my Led Zeppelin CDs are in there.”
And I’d never see him that happy again.
“O-Oh, yeah! Sure,” I said, reaching into the glove box and pulling out Claver’s favorite album, Led Zeppelin’s "Mothership." I slipped it into the CD player, and Claver predictably clicked ahead to track six. As the unmistakable opening guitar riff of "Ramble On" began, I found it easy to let myself slip into the delusion that everything was just as it should have been. Finally, I felt like I was in a comfortingly familiar atmosphere. Claver’s favorite music had always been classic rock for as long as I could remember, and even now, he bobbed his head to the music, singing right along—just like he always did. And I joined in at the chorus. Just like I always did.
“Oooooh, sometimes I grow sooo tired,” Claver sang, turning expectantly to me for the next line.
I answered: “But I know I’ve got one thing I got to do!”
“Ramble on!”
And in that moment, life was anything I wanted it to be. I was with my brother, and I didn’t have a care in the world. We shouted the words to the song like we were the greatest rock stars this country had ever seen, and we shared a smile so bright that I think anyone looking on might have thought we won the lottery. But that was just the thing—there was no one else. The world whizzed quietly by outside in the dead of night, and it was just me and Claver. Just the two of us, and what I had high hopes of being the most incredible adventure ahead of us.

I'd be disappointed if this was as far as I got, but final 24 is better than not at all (great, even) and I'm also genuinely pleased at the 4/4 from the judges.
* What position are you aiming for?
Ideally, top 3. Realistically, top 10. Like I said before, I don't really wanna get lower than the 6th place I got when I previously entered a few years ago.
* How do you feel about being in the group you are in?
We're the best and I'm glad I've got Ian/Buzzy. Also a load of the people in Vanilla are my friends anyway, so. Vanilla > Mint
* Do you feel you will be able to keep up with entry deadlines?
99% of the time, yeah. Can't guarantee 100% because we're moving house soon, but maybe I'll perform a miracle.

How do you feel about making the final 24?
Making the final 24 feels great! ^^ I mean, I knew I was going to make it - because I'm just so fabulous and full of awesome - but it's still exciting. I enjoy the thrill of being announced through just as much this year as I did in my first competition. The excitement never goes away. That's why these competitions are always so entertaining.
What position are you aiming for?
Do I even need to say it? I'm going for the gold! 8D (that totally wasn't a reference to Pirates2fan's fanfic from whatever year or anything ) Sorry UG, I know you're probably hoping for your second win, but I've been waiting a long (and I mean long) time for my first. So I'm coming for you. <;/ But yeah, I would really love to win this year.
How do you feel about being in the group you are in?
My group's okay I guess. I miss my friends who are over in Buzzy's and Dan's groups, but it was flattering that Liv genuinely wanted me to be in her group. Unfortunately I don't know a single person in my group (aside from Liv, our leader), which is really awkward, and not very fun. Oh well. I'll just do my best to further myself in the competition so I don't embarrass myself. <;/
Do you feel you will be able to keep up with entry deadlines?
Of course! I have no problem finishing anything on time. I always like to be prompt with submitting my work. That's how I always was, with both school (never did I not come to class without my homework) and fanfic competitions. Now, actually finding the motivation and willpower to work on those entries, that's a different story...

-- Aimee heatedly stomped through the snow, grumbling to herself as she pounded the ground with her feet. She huffed and Hmphed in frustration and annoyance, arms still crossed as she continued to wander aimlessly through the woods, distancing herself from their little campsite.
“Ugh, what is his problem?” Aimee asked herself aloud, carefully stepping over a fallen tree. “Why does he have to be so negative all the time? It’s so aggravating!” She lifted her leg up to kick a tree stump in her rage, but quickly decided against it, not wanting to injure her foot so stupidly. So she dropped her leg and kept walking. As the pink-haired girl trudged on, the skies that were already lightless grew considerably darker as night fell over the realm of desolation. With the oncoming darkness Aimee could barely see in front of her, nearly roaming blind if not for the tiny sliver of light emitted from the moon. Aimee didn’t care much about where she was going, and eventually forgot where she was altogether. Yet she was still walking.
Crunch, followed by the sound flapping in the breeze. Aimee froze in place. She could feel the flow of the wind shift in all different directions, and a sense of a cold, eerie aura reached her brain.
“What was that?” Aimee whirled around to search for the source of the creepiness, but there was nothing there. So she continued on her way.
Now there was some kind of nails-on-a-chalkboard noise, and Aimee could even see the glint of something metal out of the corner of her eye. She stopped again, now beyond freaked out, as she could sense someone – or something – creeping up behind her, practically feeling their body on her back. Her body tensed, she slowly forced herself to turn around, being barely able to, when she saw it.

How do you feel about making the final 24?
Making the Final 24, to be honest, was somewhat expected, but I was still very excited when I saw my name in the title. I remember clicking on it and seeing the 4/4 displayed. It was really cool. Since then, I've been aiming to improve my chapter quality (which I was going to do anyways) and posting on my fanfic about the competition. Everything has been great so far and I can't wait to see how the first week unfolds.
What position are you aiming for?
I'm aiming for at least tenth place. Last year I lost to Hadger and ended up in seventh place. However, there were only twelve people in the competition and so I feel that I ended up pretty low and not as high as I could have. I was invited for Battle of the Best but sadly, it was not started last year. I feel that if I make it to tenth place or higher, I will end on a happier note than if I get lower.
How do you feel about being in the group you are in?
The group I'm in is great. Liv is a good judge and keeps us talking about writing, and we are currently in the middle of a group activity that helps our writing skill. My teammates are all nice and friendly, and I feel good about the ability shown. There is a mixture of old and new in the group, with a few "in-betweens" like me. I hope that the rest of my group feels the same way about us.
Do you feel you will be able to keep up with entry deadlines?
Of course. I have a lot of free time on my hands this summer (until August) but even then, I'll be able to keep up with deadlines as long as they're reasonable. It helps that I love to write and see it as more of a relaxing activity than "uh-oh I need to get this chapter done stat" or "crap the deadline is tomorrow I better post quickly." I'm excited for the challenges, interviews, excerpts, etc.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I know this will sound pretty cheesy, but I'd like to thank all my readers over the years. You guys were the ones that pushed me to write better chapters, to improve my writing itself. I also want to thank the judges, and my friends, who all took the time to read my stories and help me realize mistakes. Due to various people, some on this website, some in real life, I have improved my writing quality and now enjoy writing for others instead of finding it a chore.

By this time, it was approaching dusk quickly. Shadows seemed to move about as I navigated around the town. I finally came to a cliff near the bottom and saw gentle waves and thick sand. I found myself walking down and settling down into the hot sand. Hot pink, golden yellow, ocean blue, and royal purple brightly colored the sky above me as the fiery sun fell beneath the ocean. Finally, the tears began to stream down my cheeks for the first real time since I had arrived. I missed my mom, my house, the tree in my backyard. My friends, school, and most of all...Joshua. A realization came over me as I sat there. Something that I should have realized earlier.
I was in love with him.
The thought made my cheeks color, but the salty tears flowed like a current-filled river as I remembered the face in the sky. Without thinking, I yelled into the open sky. “How does this help me find him? Why did you take me here? What is wrong with you?” Countless and colorful insults poured out of my mouth, thoughts that had been bottled up. When silence finally fell from me, the sky was dark.
Without another word, I travelled to my house and sank onto my bed to let endless sleep overtake me.

* How do you feel about making the final 24?
I'm really happy about it. I'm not used to writing stories anymore, and I really didn't think anyone would read it. I certainly didn't think anyone would like it. So, I'm thrilled that I not only got in, but I got in with a 4 out of 4. c:
* What position are you aiming for?
First, but I'm certainly not holding my breath. I'd be overjoyed being anywhere in the top 5.
* How do you feel about being in the group you are in?
I like them a lot. I was kind of expecting to be with Buzzy in the Vanillas (errr... you are the Vanilla captain, aren't you?) but being in the Chocolate group with Mama is a great opportunity. She really cares about her team members, and we all seem to get on pretty well. .w.
* Do you feel you will be able to keep up with entry deadlines?
Oh, gosh, I really really hope so. ;n; School is starting in like two weeks and ahhhhh college-level classes why did I do this to myself.
* Is there anything else you would like to add?

-- Kaitlyn came back out a little later, drying off and putting on the PJ's and putting the dirty clothes in the hamper. She'd have to go to the laundromat soon-- probably tomorrow, if she had the time between work and self-loathing.
All she wanted to do was sleep, but the seventeen year old was running behind on her schoolwork, and if she ever wanted to make the last step to her better life, to overseas in a big city, she'd have to graduate high school- get to college. She was in her last year of high school, and needed to finish her online credits.
She booted up her netbook, connecting to the internet and trying to load up the credit program. Before it had finished, Kaitlyn had fallen asleep, her arms her pillow and her long hair spilling out over the desk.
She was woken up at 4 AM by a knock on the door. Not thinking, she stumbled up and answered it. Kaitlyn couldn't see who it was-- it was dark and she was sleepy. But whoever it was put a burlap bag over her head and took her away.

How do you feel about making the final 24?
It's been a while since I've taken part in a competition, so I'm pretty excited to make the final 24! The fanfic board has kinda diminished lately, so maybe it's not that big a surprise I got in, although the release of New Leaf did revive it - at least enough to get it to the second page.
What position are you aiming for?
My goal is to get into the Top Ten. It would be cool to beat my last position and get to fifth or higher (because I'd like to think my writing improved since then), but I think I'll have to work a bit harder to get there, specifically on updates. I do have the first part of my story outlined, but it's difficult to just sit down and write it all out because I get distracted easily by the Internet. When school starts, it will be even harder, so I'll have to manage my time better if I want to get to a higher position.
How do you feel about being in the group you are in?
I'm pretty happy with the group I'm in. I already know Dan is an awesome writer and he's proven to be an equally awesome leader. My group members are all new faces to me, but they're really nice and it was fun to create our crazy mad libs story.
Do you feel you will be able to keep up with entry deadlines?
I hope I can keep up with the deadlines. The interviews aren't too difficult to do, but my problem goes back to making myself sit down and do them. The first couple months of school may get really busy, since I'm still getting accustomed to my classes and I'm working on college applications, but things should calm down after that. I don't think it would be too big a problem, and after a few months, I'll probably be more efficient at getting everything done on time.
-- Emilia Brown is by no means an emotional person.
One of the earliest memories I have of her takes place at her apartment. She had been clambering all over the furniture, a self-declared mountain climber destined to reach the peak of Mount Everest – a wooden cabinet located next to the sofa. She was attempting the daring feat without any protection, a mound of pillows being the only means for safety if she fell.
“Just in case. I’m a pro- prof- I’m the best! I can’t actually fall,” she assured me as she carefully maneuvered through the slippery cushions, each move as exact as possible for a four year old. One hand shot out, a few inches short of reaching the top cabinet handle. She grabbed a small, circular pillow for height and steadied herself on top, leaning one arm against the wall to regain balance. Emilia glanced back at me and grinned. Victory was imminent.
Before she could continue, the pillow began to slide downwards, incapable of supporting her weight for more than a few moments. She could only give an astonished little gasp before she collapsed onto the heap of pillows with a muffled thump, hitting her knee against the coffee table in the process. I witnessed the fall in a trance-like state, mouth agape, a silent scream stuck in my throat as I heard the sickening sound of skin meeting wood. The ruckus was loud enough for both our mothers to come running in from the kitchen, each one tending to her own child.
My mother enveloped me in a hug and whispered soothing words of comfort, despite the fact I’d taken no part in the ludicrous mountaineering game. I vaguely heard Emilia’s mother questioning her on her well being with similar care, and Emilia’s nonchalant responses – “Yes, I’m fine. No, no doctor! He smells funny. Yeah, of course we want ice cream!” Then, in a more serious tone, she inquired about the game she was playing and exactly how she came to obtain such a formidable looking bruise on her knee.
I glanced over at the pair and instantly wished I hadn’t been so curious. An ugly bluish black bump was forming on her right knee, stained by a thin stream of crimson where the corner of the table had broke through her skin.
Well, that got the waterworks started, and in the end I was the one crying over my ice cream, while Emilia chided me for being so weak-hearted and laughed over the salty dairy treat I’d created, dubbing it Thousand Tears Vanilla.
No, Emilia definitely isn’t the sensitive type, but the expression she wore on her face when I told her about the move could have convinced me otherwise.

- but it's still exciting. I enjoy the thrill of being announced through just as much this year as I did in my first competition. The excitement never goes away. That's why these competitions are always so entertaining.
) Sorry UG, I know you're probably hoping for your second win, but I've been waiting a long (and I mean long) time for my first. So I'm coming for you. <;/ But yeah, I would really love to win this year. 
Anyways, congrats to whoever made it through, I can't read who, but yeah, congrats.
