My first river fish caught in the game was an arapaima, as well as the first river fish for the next day and I just caught on today (the following day)... Whenever I go to the island, I come back with at least 3-4 sharks and a couple large-sized fish like the napoleonfish and the blue marlin... I also come back with a basket full of rare beetles, including three or four hercules, tons of goliaths, ect... So many.

IIRC, finding rare fish/bugs was an extreme challenge in City Folk which is what made it so enjoyable. Don't get me wrong, ACNL is 10000000000000x better than City Folk, but do you think it is a bit too easy to catch these rare bugs and fish? I'm pulling loads of sharks in with the basic rod...

I find it is too.. im about 80% into my bugs and fish already and its been almost a month.
City Folk was a real challenge, I couldn't catch a rare fish or bug no more then 3 times.

Well I mean, for very young kids like 7 or 8 years old who buy new leaf, it may be slightly more challenging if they aren't good at fishing or bug catching (not age discriminating, I couldn't catch a shark in wild world ever in two years of play when I was 8-10 lol)... I find that I'm about 40% into my encyclopedia after 8 days hehe...

Yeah, it's way too easy to catch bugs on this game. I guess this is an opportunity for me to get a full bug/fish catalog though.

It is because the island is smaller and has limitations.

Since the village is large and includes a river, it has many possible bugs and fish that can appear. There is a limit of what can show up at one time.

However Island only has a limited number of creatures to show up and since it is so much smaller, they appear more often and of course the developers made the rare creatures appear on island

I believe the reason they pushed the 'common' button on the fish and bugs is because there are soo many to catch now. And just going for a specific species would be a challange itself.

They made the rarer fish/bugs more common in New Leaf so that it's easier to make money. On top of paying for your mortages, you have to pay for Public Works Projects, which can be extremely costly.

Yes, players need more money in this game but I think making beetles and sharks common is a very bad solution. It makes every other hunt (especially diving) a complete waste of time.

They kept almost the same prices for bugs and fishes but it's a bit absurd now...

I kind of thought it was to reduce the frustration factor.  I played AC:CF for 3 years and never once managed to catch a banded dragonfly.  I was unable to get my golden net no matter how much I tried, and I tried a LOT.  That's a lot of frustration... Of course, it also makes it more satisfying when you complete things... but that's only if you can ever actually complete it!

I don't think getting 80% of the bugs and fish so quickly has as much to do with the game being easier as it is that this is the first time for me that I've started the game at the beginning of summer.  I'm used to getting Animal Crossing in the fall or for Christmas and there are hardly any bugs and fish available in the winter.  It was a long wait for summer to get the 80% of the bug and fish available in previous games.

Yeah feels a lot easier than it used to be.
I like it better when rare creatures were harder to come by, more incentive to go fishing/bug hunting.

I am also frustrated with how easy it is to catch expensive bugs and fish. I understand that there are more drains on money in this game than in previous games in the series, but there are better ways to have dealt with this. The ease with which the encyclopedias can be completed will probably prevent New Leaf from topping Wild World in my view, although it has still topped both City Folk and Population Growing and is likely to end up as one of my five favorite games.

Got all the fish yesterday (I time travel) and am surprised at how easy it was. Aside from Giant Snakeheads and Gars giving me headaches (as in, they're really rare in this game. =/) it felt a lot easier than CF and WW.

As for bugs, I'm absolutely awful at Tarantulas and Scorpions. Apart from dumb luck moments now and then, I tend to struggle catching those two. On the other hand, I find I'm a lot better at catching bees in this game, mostly attributed to the fact they are slightly easier to get in this game. I don't like catching bugs  as much as fish (apart from the ones on the island: they're a good money maker) though, so I guess that's a factor in that.

Lucky you! I can't seem to catch any sharks I get my bf to catch them for me when I see them in my game. I had aspire of rare fish at the beginning but no more. I'm only getting sea bass now

Best place for all the sharks would be the island. Try going there in the night and you can usually pick up a few.

What makes the island seem like there is more is the fact that it is so small. All of the fish/bugs are concentrated.

I never had any issues catching stuff in Wild World. New Leaf and Wild World feel prettymuch the same to me difficulty-wise. Except I'm having a harder time catching scorpions and tarantulas than the last game. They're the only bugs I have left before I have nothing new to catch for this month. And every time I see one either it escapes or attacks me.

Took me awhile to get a spider too. And the beetles are harder to catch.

Maybe it's possible that some of you are older and just better at the game than when you were young? That's why Wild World seemed easier to me than GC.

I never caught a tarantula or scorpion (I saw each JUST once actually) since 2010... I've seen two so far in my first few days of playing, but they're always at the most inconvenient times when I don't have my net.

Not only do they seem to be more common, but the rare bugs also seem to be slower too.  I caught a banded dragonfly today no problem.  Just took out my net, walked over and BAM! In all the other games, you REALLY had to be quick to snag those suckers.  Same for the petaltail, which I actually never caught in CF.

Also, I've caught nearly every tarantula and bee I've seen with ease.  I've even caught several tarantulas after they have seen me with my net out and are ready to attack.  That NEVER happened in the other games.

I'm not really going to complain about them making it easier this time around though because I have a chance now to actually get a full encyclopedia and museum, which I never got in the other games.

I'm not exaggerating when I say that I went to the beach for little over 5 minutes after 7pm, and caught myself 4 sharks and 2 beetles; earning me 66,000 bells.

It's a bit less fun when the formerly rare catches are more common and easier to get, but it's a good thing when you realise that there's also much more to spend your money on. Most main public works projects are in the hundred thousands, you can decorate the outside of your house, there's much more choice in clothing and shoes; all this and you still have your mortgage to pay off!

Sharks are indeed rare, but the majority of shark and other species's are on the lower scale of rarity, compared to the more elusive fish and insects.....if that makes any sense. I do agree generally to the OP's aforementioned statement, but in my opinion, if you actively build PWP and buy house extensions, you shouldn't have a major surplus of money. The reason they are making the normally hard to find fish now just above uncommon, is they are really the prime way to make money in the game. Nintendo wants you to play a active role as mayor in the game, being so grants a very high demand in bells. If you don't time travel and spam the island more then once a day, I actually find NL more difficult then the prior games of the series.
I firmly believe that they made the higher level of rarity fish and insects the same in NL.
It's not everyday you pick up a Oarfish and Coelacanth.....

Plus, they give you the tours on the island, where they ratchet up the difficulty, so if you want a challenge you can always play those.  I am at the point where I can't medal with the choices they give me.

I don't mind too much that it's easy to get money; what bothers me is that it's so much easier than in previous games to find and catch formerly rare bugs and fish, making it too easy to complete the encyclopedias.
