Hi all.

Do we think the grass is wearing in this game? I keep feeling like it is, but I'm just not sure. I never run anywhere - ie walk whilst pressing b. Someone else on a different thread said they hadn't noticed any grass wear after a week of playing. Would like to know other people's experiences on the grass. I didn't play Cityfolk, but I know grass wearing might have affected my enjoyment of that version. If it is so, it might change how I approach the game.

I'm also with another poster, who gets annoyed with houses just popping up and removing trees. Twice now a new house has oblitated my orchards! And always of the same fruit! Grr...

As from recent sources on other threads. What with people testing out the rate at which their grass wears at. It is said that whenever you run or walk, the grass wears away still. but at a more slow rate than City Folk. Plus, Every game session you have, the grass allround wears a bit. So it's best to not play in short bursts in a day, but rather play for long periods of time or suspend your game instead of ending it.

Thank you. Helpful to know.

That's my grass messed up then, as I'm a short burst player. Electricity bill too high to keep suspending the game.

If this is indeed the case, then I won't be able to use the the town as my refuge.

I hope Leif starts selling fertilizer and grass seed, else he's not much use. Failing that, the town will have to be over developed...

Hmm... Not liking this idea.

I suggest you get into making Paths in your town. It just uses patterns and it looks beautiful in your town. Then players would have a direct path witch they could travel on instead of ruining the rest of your grass.
Some Examples:
Stairs

Adorable patterns

Nice Rivers

Theres more but these i liked best.

Is a thought, thank you. I'm a meanderer. Besides, have to go off path to water flowers and find fossils.

Anyway I don't want my town so rigid and controlled, with 'keep of the grass' signs. However, isn't it a bit 'racisist? species-ist?' if human town folk have to walk on paths, and animal ones don't? Equal rights for all! I am the Mayor, and I can't even walk on the grass?

Admitedly, I am reading a lot of Dystopian fiction right now, so may be taking that thought too far...

Haha, it really does suck because you have to choose really, but it all depends overall. In my opinion, Im going to leave how the grass looks out of my mind. Otherwise, if i keep the thought on how my grass looks every day, i know i wouldn't be having such a fun time. Plus, like you said, Villagers are walking literally EVERYWHERE. I feel to just ignore the grass and embrace the dirt

I could embrace the dirt... If I didn't want to embrace the snow... Making snowmen is my favourite thing, and I've heard this was affected by lack of grass..

Oh yeah, i forgot about snow. Yes, you would have more snow-less fields due to lack of grass. But that is a little price to pay for instead of spreading flowers EVERYWHERE just to try to grow the grass back, because then by the time it hits winter, There are so many flowers that you could possibly trample over. So you'd be worrying about that too. Haha, i miss how in the Gamecube version, you could run anywhere without any fear of tearing up your grass away.

Yes, I miss my GC town too, but always find once I've moved on to the next version I can't go back. Anyway Static would be so mad if I turned up now after... well however long it's been. Just hoping it doesn't mess up the snowmen. Most of WW was dirt, yet you could still make them. Snow trumps flowers for me, but if it is messed up then I may have to decamp to WW every winter, to get my snowfix...

I started to notice some wear so I put down a path.

Every day I shake trees, hit rocks , dig for fossils, water flowers all at the same time limiting my contact with my grass.

The rest of the time I use my path - always.

I planted trees and flowers on bare spots and water faithfully - I am seeing some regrowth.

I think it is best to try to get a handle on the grass situation while it is the rainy season - I am nervous for fall......

After a little over a week I'm seeing some wear and even were I've planted flowers and watered them regularly I'm not seeing much change (it's even been raining in my town for three days, still no change) I don't want to put paths down and even so paths don't stop the grass deterioration
See here

I'm holding out hope maybe they'll realise that its such a hated feature and they'll release a patch that stops grass deterioration

On my days off I think I will head back out to the Nintendo site to see if their message boards have any information.

I was playing a lot in short bursts myself in the beginning.  That is why handheld systems are there, so you can play some here and there.  But my town was starting to lose grass badly, in summer.

So instead of playing on both my breaks & lunch at work, then before bed.  I am just doing lunch & before bed.

I am hoping this helps.  Unlocking Leif has helped, along with the villagers putting down a few flowers.

I realize some folks enjoy paths & I don't want to take away from their enjoyment.  But if NES could release a Grass Seed so I can save my village, I would be happy.

The only grass wear I have noticed is around my river, I play on and off most days, from what I have seen in my town it's not that bad so I'm not overly bothered by it

I knew I would get grass wear so I started walking mostly around the edges to get anywhere.  Of course I did walk all over to get fossils and such.  I am now putting down paths (I just found a great path to use)  Hopefully it won't get too bad on New Leaf.

I guess I've already given in to the dirt... I have patches everywhere, though I think it adds a more realistic touch to the game. I mean, grass is a living thing after all... You'd die if someone kept running over you too I'd imagine.

Most of my grass wear is around the river as well. I'm just glad paths prevent grass loss now. I'm definitely taking advantage of it.

But DeBuff,  do paths prevent wear or just disguise it? Roxy's link didn't work for me but Roxy's post says it doesn't stop deterioration...

Kekoke, I really like the paths you found - although the middle link just showed up as grey for me. I'll check it again on another computer in case there is some sort of firewall policy that is getting in the way.

I put down paths last week, but as I have to spend most of the time going off them, I'm probably going to remove them. Frankly I'd prefer more pro designs, than useless paths. I don't get a lot of visitors, so it's just me on the grass. I just can't decide what is happening. It might be coming back where I have a lot of flowers, it might not. It's too difficult to work out.

Making a path with patterns doesn't protect the grass underneath.

So I'm gathering. Trouble is if you have to walk off the paths, what is the point of laying them? I don't really want them and they're restricting my clothes choices. I just think they don't look right, although I've seen a lot of nice ones at Bidoof's. At the very least I need one that takes up 4 design squares or less.

I won't TT to get my grass back, so I guess I'm just going to have to keep doing what I'm doing and see if deterioration leads me to lay paths again later, when town more developed.

The point of laying them, even when you need to get off them, is to show you where you have walked before when you are just passing through.

I go back and forth through my town tens of times a day, beach to re-tail to the shops to the station to my house - if I can make those journeys along the same pathways then I can minimize the damage done.

I have a second town that I am playing around with - progress is much slower as I still spend most of my time on my original town but I am experimenting with it.

My original town is set up with a main path that leads to the main places in my town.

My second town has no paths and I am watching for any wear and immediately planting flowers when I see some.

I log on to each town only once a day.

I am trying to compare the rate of grass deterioration this way.

Animal Grrrl, this is true. However I tend to go the same route to places in my town, so I don't need the paths to remind me where to walk, and I only tend to play for a hour a day, so 2 trips there and back max. Besides, just gone mad on QRing clothes, and finding different path, so have to redo them all anyway.   I still think I'd like to add paths as final touch to a fully developed town. Depends upon how annoyed I get trying to relay them, cos it's frustrating to do!

CBAC, that is dedication indeed! Please let us know what you conclude. If I had the bells and time, I'd download and do the same.

Just hope Nintendo listen, and patch us the ability to buy some grass seed, I think that would be all most of us would ask for.

Most of my paths are one block wide, lined with flowers, and do not use patterns. I also have many diagonal paths. So my town looks really different from a lot of the ones I've seen in the Dream Suite. Vive la différence!

I do have a pattern down along the path to the Re-Tail store from the train station. Thought it would be handy for visitors coming to buy or sell. I also use a pattern to mark paths which are under construction (not yet lined with flowers).

I was a bit disappointed to hear that Nintendo brought back grass wear but I'm used to it from AC:CF. It's just a nuisance.
