This is just something I've been wondering, and I'm still kinda unsure, how I go about doing this.
I remember in the older games, all you had to do was stand out on a clear day to tan, and you could get the darkest tan by standing out for 5 hours. But does tanning work by hours anymore? Or does it get only darker an hour a day? I tried standing out for about 2 hours, and I didn't really notice a difference, I restarted, and my character was the same. I also read in City Folks, you have to be walking around, and honestly I don't think I want to be holding my 3DS for hours doing nothing.
PS: I could just be impatient, but I'm not sure.

He took the midnight train, going anywhere!
In New Leaf you can now wear hats to prevent tanning. They probably implemented this so that your character can have his/her hands free for the mini games on the island. Also Tanning Season in the village officially runs from July 16 to September 15, so now you can wear hats or use an umbrella to control or prevent a tan.
Oh, but where can I get pizza-plant seeds? - Stitches, ACCF
I don't think wigs will work. Check out Liquefy's incredibly detailed FAQ for New Leaf. Go to Events in Section 23. In the July section you will find his notes for Tanning Season. He includes a list of all the hats that will prevent tanning.
Aww, it kind of sucks that hats will stop you from tanning. I know that some people don't like getting tans in animal crossing, but I love them! The problem is, I also love wearing hats and I love love love wearing my hero's cap. Do you see my dilemma
I just ate like, 50 pounds of peach pie and I'm feeling kind of bloated.
