Getting the island Getting the island is your first step in making a ton of bells, to get the island you have to do the following things... 1.) Pay off the 10,000 bell fee to get a house (Day 1) 2.) The next day, talk to Tom Nook in Nook's Homes and get the estimate for your first house upgrade (Day 2) 3.) Pay off your first home upgrade. (NOTE: Catching ocean fish is the easiest way to make bells at this time.) (Day 2) 4.) The next day Tortimer should show up when you load your Character, talk to him on the Pier. (Day 3) 5.) The next day you will be able to visit the island, (NOTE: There is a 1,000 bell fee to go to the island.) You can find this information on Thonky.com's New Leaf Guide along with many more guides to New Leaf.
Island Tips/Tricks -It is always summer on the island. -You can skip Kap'n's song by tapping B repeatedly. -The island shop's stock will change every day so check back often! -Leila will pay you little to no bells for items (Not worth selling to her) -If you visit the island with friends, no friend will be able to join or leave your game at the island -for 50 medals you can buy the Club Tortimer membership which allows you to visit the island with complete strangers. Just be careful online, no matter who it is. -The gyroid outside will let you borrow tools and a wetsuit for use on the island (NOTE: You cannot take these items off the island or on island tours) -When on an island Tour you can collect the fruit in the towns and bring them back to the island with you (NOTE: Not all tours allow you to do this) -To take things off the island (Like bugs) you must place them in the box next to Leilani's counter. There Are Two Well-Known Tactics To Catching Beetles On The Island
First off is LinAndKo's Guide to making 400,000 Bells in 30 minutes. This is Kohei's strategy: 1.) Set your Town Ordinance to Wealthy/Bell Boom 2.) Visit the island 3.) Cut down all the trees in the center of your island 4.) Circle your island catching beetles along the way
The second tactic, and the one I recommend, is LucarioPlayer14's How to Make Easy Bells video This is LucarioPlayer14's strategy 1.) Set your town Ordinance to Wealthy/Bell Boom (NOTE: This is not mentioned in the video.) 2.) Visit the island 3.) Cut down all the trees on your island except for one palm tree on the left and right side of your island (NOTE: LucarioPlayer14 recommends keeping one tree on the grassy part of your island as well; but this is not necessary.) 4.) Wander left and right catching beetles Know What You're Looking For! It's always a good idea to know exactly what to look for, here is a recommended bug list and selling price for the bugs. The sell price is the regular selling price, the Wealthy/Bell Boom Town Ordinance will increase the amount of money you earn! Click Here to visit Thonky's Town Ordinance Guide. To see what each beetle looks like in-game click on the name of it!
Recommended Bug List Regular Sell Price (Wealthy Town Sell Price) Golden Stag - 12,000 Bells (14,400 Bells) -These guys are some of the rarest, and they'll run away at any sign of you! Sneak extra slow to catch these guys!! Horned Hercules - 12,000 Bells (14,400 Bells) -Very shy little buggers (See what I did there?) sneak up extra slow for these guys. Giant Stag - 10,000 Bells (12,000 Bells) -notes go here... Rainbow Stag - 10,000 Bells (12,000 Bells) -notes go here... Cyclommatus Stag - 8,000 Bells (9,600 Bells) -These beetles fetch a nice amount of bells for how lazy they are, you can easily walk up to one of the guys to cath them! Horned Atlas - 8,000 Bells (9,600 Bells) -Just sneak up on them, they will run away if you get too close! Horned Elephant - 8,000 Bells (9,600 Bells) -Big and slow, sneaking up on them shouldn't be too hard. Goliath Beetle - 6,000 Bells (7,200 Bells) -You can easily walk up to and catch these beetles.
You can find all the prices and pictures for every bug in Animal Crossing: New Leaf at IGN.com
Bug Catching Tips/Tricks to maximize profits -The most expensive beetles come out at 5PM and go back into hiding at 8AM. -Run off less expensive bugs, there seems to be a limit on how many bugs can be on the island at one time. -Prioritize golden stags when placing bugs into the basket next to Leilani's counter to take home. -Hold down A to sneak up on bugs, alternatively the less you push on the circle pad the slower you will go. Sneaking at full speed will often scare away the most expensive beetles, instead sneak at a slower speed. -Enact the Wealthy/Bell Boom ordinance to maximize profits. -You can run on the island, just not close to the palm trees where bugs are. (NOTE: This only really works for people using Tactic #2) Credits LinAndKo – Tactic #1 LucarioPlayer14 – Tactic #2 Luvbunny892 – Wealthy Town selling prices. Very nice, and the improvements really made it useful. I never knew that those white&red things(Goliaths, I guess) were so valuable! This will really help me sort through what I should be keeping in my box. You should do one for mainland bugs as well.
I can't edit the main post (again) but I did just think about this: Hermit Crabs appear to be normal shells (The blue "sea snail" type shell) until you walk up to them. Usually I sell all the shells to Leila so I know when Hermit Crabs show up.
I've only utilized the features of Club Tortimer a few times now and from what I can tell is that you either join an island game as a client or if the game cannot find any people to join, it will create a game for you that others can join you.
I would like to add that it is important to remember that butterflies count towards to the bugs at one time limit as well, so make sure to catch and release all those emperor butterflies that seem to accumulate while you're not looking..
I am a weird one. Living for Christmas and Mika.
I eat lemons and wear too much makeup.
Thanks, this is a great guide, I waited in till night to post just to check if some of the tips worked and they have improved by speed two fold. I am following the second option as I feel it is the easiest. Thanks again for compiling this guide!

I recommend grabbing the fishing rod too when you grab the net. You can grab any finned fish that you see and when you get the bags full message just drop the rod. It'll still be there when you go back outside and acts as a nice droppable buffer item so you don't have to lose a bug.
Did my first Bug catching run earlier today. Managed to earn enough bells to finish work on building a second bridge and pay off my 3rd expansion loan, and this is with some beetles/sharks being donated to the museum AND with the Beautiful town Ordinance. Really surprised by how much I made from it.
Haha, yeah. Glad everyone likes it I'd like to second the recommendation to bring a fishing rod with you, sharks are worth a lot of bells too!
Just to show you guys how much you can make, I have 1M bells in my bank after paying off my loan and finishing a new Public Works Project So the more time you put in now, the more relax time you can have later
Yeh, I've made around 2 million bells from it so far, and I've just paid my debt to nook off and funded a fountain. The best money making technique in the game, I will lay off it for now - don't want to kill the ecosystem.

Here's a tip that worked for me. I kept trying to catch the beetles while I was either too far away from or too close to the tree, and it would scare the beetle away. Plant flowers in front of each of the trees you have left. If you stand just to the front of the flowers, you will be at the perfect distance!
