It was one of those first few days of spring where the wind is blowing through your hair and the sun is on your back and all you can think about is how cold and dreary winter was, and it makes you feel good. Fourside didn't get many good days like this, which was a shame. Everest liked that feeling of having the sun on your back, the warmth that it provides. It was... nice. Not this cold, hard bench that he was sitting on. But it was all he had, and once the fruits from his orchard grew in, and once he was able to see Nook, he could pay off his house. The apples were almost done. One or two more days and they would be in. Getting these apples was quite challenging; he'd had to bargain with his neighbors for half an hour before they would spare some for him.

Ever since the change... The villages are changing, they told him. They're forming a coalition. Not just a coalition, a government. A government of humans and animals. Mostly animals, because they outnumbered the humans. But then they brought in humans, and made them work, and didn't let them stop. They put the humans in work camps. Made them work, all day. They were unstable, they said. The power they had could not be used for evil, so they were locked away. Everest had seen someone accidentally do this once. He tried putting on clothes and a shovel at the same time. The man flickered for a moment, and then disappeared. Everest saw him outside the fence the next day. He said that his name was Reslo and that he would try to save them one day. Reslo ran away and Everest didn't think he would see Reslo again.

But then came the day when Reslo kept his promise and stormed the camp. He was armed with two golden axes and a slingshot. He never had to take them out of their holsters. Reslo was a machine, tearing through the lines of soldiers that had been called up to take him and put him back in camp. He would kick them in the belly, get close to them and knee them in the face if they doubled over. If they didn't, he kicked them again or punched them. It was a simple formula, but the results weren't. The Coalition exploded with rage at him, sending wave after wave of soldiers. He armed the rescued prisoners with his tools, and the rest of them he sent to a nearby place where they could get items for themselves. Each prisoner was then armed with a standard axe and light armor, courtesy of Tom Nook secretly paying the Able Sisters to make extra armor shirts. The Coalition eventually backed off for a little bit, but Reslo didn't. He and his newly made army charged into the heart of The Coalition, whittling their forces down into just one town, named Felcar. Felcar was once bursting with commerce among the animal villagers and it was where their leader lived.

Reslo had The Coalition bottled up in Felcar, unable to move or do anything. The soldiers that once fought for them had left and joined Reslo. All that was left of The Coalition were the former commanders, and plans were being made for a public execution. As it turns out, most animals had nothing against humans. Most of them liked humans. They were good for business. And they always had Bells to give away, because they would scurry around and sell fruit and bugs and fish, and come Flea Market would conduct more than fair trading, often in favor of the villager instead of the human. The humans would send them gifts of some items and the villagers would so excitedly send them fruit. It wasn't much, but the humans normally seemed to make the most of the fruit by making orchards and over time, millions of Bells. Really, the villagers and humans had parched things up over the... two weeks since Felcar had been surrounded. Things were looking up for Animal Crossing, it seemed.

These were not easy times, though. Orchards were being replanted, the Able Sisters couldn't
get enough materials for clothing until Felcar was rid of The Coalition entirely, and Kapp'n had had to sell his bus to make ends meet. Fourside itself just lost most of the trees from a fire, and the constant marching of the soldiers that were once there killed nearly all the grass. The town had paid, with the aid of Everest, for dozens of Nook's flowers to start a garden to grow back grass and grow hybrids to sell to any town left with money. Even Nook, who once seemed to have an infinite amount of Bells, had started scraping the bottom of the barrel. He could manage, but Crazy Redd was putting him out of business. Redd hadn't expanded to Fourside just yet, and if he did he would earn nothing here. Fourside was strictly Nook and Co. and that was it. Tortimer felt that way, too. Ever since Lloid and Nook signed the business deal allowing Nook to sell things through auction, opening up some economic flow in Fourside, they were Nook and Co. only. It was simple.

The garden was pretty smart, too. Fourside, in the wake of the economic crisis, bought seeds and planted them, and Everest added some cherries, the native fruit of the town, to it. There was a nice setup going on. Of course, the town ran out of Golden Watering Cans to give out, and they ended up asking Everest to lend his to make Golden Roses. It was because of those Roses that Fourside wasn't in debt. The cherries were getting popular, too. Even the villagers had started keeping private gardens of whatever fruits and flowers they had. Everest got the apples from one of the neighbors, but for a price. He had to give up a Golden Shovel. Normally that wouldn't be much, but Nook had run almost entirely out of shovels for Fourside. Everest considered paying him a few extra thousand Bells, but the ABD at the Town Hall was taken back to the ABD company, meaning Everest had ten million Bells and no way to use them. He did have a bag of thirty grand in his basement, but it was running out quickly. The only way to an ABD was going to the City, which was fourteen hours of walking, one way. Crazy Redd would be sure to bring one if he set up shop here...

A horn sounded. There was trouble at the Gate.

That's the first two pages of Everest Nightmare.

I'll probably do the every other day updating schedule that we did with the Sentients, but now I don't have track so there will be less interruptions. That means cheese.

Everest rushed to the Gate with a tree branch that he had been sharpening for a time like this . He saw other villagers doing the same, including the other human in the village, a female named Michaela. She also had a stick, and a rock as well. They made eye contact and continued to sprint to the Gate. Everest came upon the gate, and had a startling sight. There was a KK Slider, on a hastily constructed platform raised about two feet off the ground. A man in a tan uniform had two axes, both in a holster on each hip, decorated heavily with medals. Another uniform had a pistol pointed directly KK Slider's back, almost digging into his side. KK's paws were behind his back, together but almost loose because he was sweating so heavily. His guitar was sitting on the ground in front of the platform, two strings broken and in seemingly bad shape. He was mouthing something to Reslo, in disguise and hidden amongst the crowd, but also right next to Everest. KK was mouthing something to Reslo, and he was nodding and mouthing back. They were up to something.

The decorated uniform started speaking into a microphone. "I am Sir Valencio of the Honor Guard of The Coalition, the highest honor a humble soldier can earn. I am here to shame anyone who would dare resist The Coalition. There is one man I seek especially, names Reslo. If he does not surrender his life to The Coalition, your beloved KK Slider loses his." Reslo left the crowd, quickly and quietly, as did about a dozen others.  The man started counting down from thirty. He took out an axe and prepared to swing. "Your leader Reslo is afraid! He will not give his life for you! Look! He could not save this one, nor could he sa-" Everest heard a gunshot. Sir Valencio fell dead on the platform. The guard with the pistol out it on the ground, stripped off his uniform and said he was with Reslo. Michaela, Everest and a few villagers circled around him ready to intercept if he tried to leave before Reslo came back. He didn't even try.

Reslo came back about ten minutes later, with a sniping rifle in hand and a spent bullet in the other. "Don't worry, he's with me. We set this up from the beginning." Reslo moved forward and hugged him. "Hello, brother. How's the family?" The brother smiled. "Good to see you, Reslo. The family's doing fine. I managed to convince father to give some aid to Fourside and to let Redd do whatever it is he does before he wipes that fox off the face of the earth. He's also found out why The Coalition still supplies, but lets talk about that indoors. I feel a strong breeze."  Reslo nodded. Then they started to head off to The Roost, which was currently a temporary home for refugees. Everest started to walk back. Michaela joined him.

"I didn't realize until just now that Reslo had been here." she said. "Seeing him show up with that gun sure surprised me, but it brought back memories. I wonder what The Coalition will do?" She asked him, with a sparkle in her eyes. Man, that sparkle made her so pretty. It was like the angels had become Michelangelo and her eyes were the Sistine Chapel. "Well, I'm going to guess that they'll either forget about him or send the last of their troops to come and take Fourside. In either event, it looks like Reslo has more than enough force to finish off the rest of The Coalition. I say that this war be over in two weeks." Michaela shook her head. "I heard that The Coalition has a massive army on the island of Tuskany that everyone thinks was destroyed when the nuclear reactor exploded. You remember, right? Wendell's from there, he's the last one to survive that place. He backs up the theory, but no one believes him..."

Know what? I completely forgot I had released EN. Whoops.

They came upon her house. "Well, I guess I'll see you when I see you." Everest said, and started to head to his house. "Bye!" Michaela yelled, and waved. He waved back and went home. Upon walking home, Everest made sure to water his plot of land where he gardened, making sure to replant his flowers closer to each other to spawn hybrids, as he wanted to grow some Black and Blue Roses, and maybe an Orange Cosmos. Cosmos were in somewhat high demand compared to Golden Roses, due in part because Nook had just sold off most of his Cosmos crop and now everyone who wanted to buy them couldn't, which was good for Everest and Nook, because it gave Nook time to restock. It was a good tradeoff.

Nook had even offered to buy his Golden Watering Can outright, something Everest had smacked down right away. Ain't no one gonna buy this beauty. There was only six people in the world that Everest knew of who had one of these. Four of them were old geezers who either forgot that they had it or didn't care, one was Mayor Tortimer, and one was Everest. Tortimer, or course, had Phyllis water the garden for extra money, so he didn't really have it. Well, kind of. Not really. Yes! No. Yes! Aw, who cares. The one that Fourside was using was a gift from his uncle, anyway. Actually, Crazy Redd had a few...

No. No buying from Redd, unless it was absolutely necessary. Nook only. Redd was not to be trusted. The Coalition had used Redd as a spy, gathering information on his customers and eventually finding out if they were loyal or not to The Coalition. He waited six months, and then released a list of six thousand rebels and their locations, that had escaped from camps. Reslo was actually on that list, but he and some fellow rebels had managed to escape under a hail of gunfire. He was one of the only ones who  made it, and definitely the only one with guns to defend himself. Until, of course, he raided a Coalition arsenal and it just happened to have two outdated and most likely forgotten bombers in the hangar. Reslo read the instruction manual, loaded it with some gas he found in an office, and had a rebel and himself go on a bombing run of the capital city of Treehut, Absidio. Absidio was the primary recruiting grounds for The Coalition's Navy, meaning that the ships out in the sea couldn't refuel without going around Cape Camofrog, which was four thousand miles away. The Navy was crippled, so all Reslo had to do was board a ship, convince the sailors that they would die without the food Reslo would surely have, and go home back to the country of Central, which was where Fourside was located. However, Reslo stayed in Treehut for a while, eventually burning the rest of the smaller towns and eliminating Coalition influence. It was then where he met Michaela, whom turned out to be his second cousin by marriage. It turns out that, when Reslo was sent to work on his grandparents' farm over each summer, that she went to live with his parents. That went on every summer for ten years, and Reslo never knew about it, nor did Michaela.

She became a general in his war against The Coalition, specializing in Aerial Combat. She had gone to East Point, The Coalition's highest rated military academy. She was actually going to finish up her training in fighter jets, a new technology only very recently developed, and would've been the first in a breed of supersonic combat. Of course, she burned down East Point and stole a fighter jet from The Coalition, flying it back to Absidio and then taking a smaller, less speedy plane back before flying the rest of the jets back, one by one. There were fifteen in all, taking three days to fly them to Abisidio. She also had the blueprints for the jets, effectively keeping it out of the hands of The Coalition. Ironically, she never actually wanted to be in the military, she wanted to just settle down and live a quiet life, which was why she was now in Fourside. Military history and the fact that she helped to wipe off a cruel government from the face of the planet aside, she was really a very lovely person. But she had no problem killing a snake or some other varmint.

That long, blonde hair that sparkled in the sun when it was just right made her seem taller. Her harsh cold blue eyes further accentuated that. On top of all that, she was normally seen in shorts and with a hunting knife, just in case of something. Of course, there was nothing to hunt anymore, as it was now illegal to stab a fish instead of catching one, because the blood mixed into the river waters and drove the bears crazy with hunger. She was truly a really great person, one that could put up a fight and also keep one from happening.

But that was beside the point. The point was, Crazy Redd could not be trusted. Buying from him would be a very bad thing to do, but there was a flip side. He also knew the people he supplied the information to. Reslo had recently been having trouble finding out where The Coalition was getting its soldiers from; Felcar was supposed to be the last stand of The Coalition. Once it was surrounded, this was all supposed to be over, but then a cartography group down near the newly rediscovered Cape Central were ambushed by a squad of tanks. It took them completely by surprise, but fortunately there was a former Marine that had fought in the Great Bell War almost twenty years ago. He was old, but, like Michaela, had a knife on him, something he learned in a foxhole when a Neirat got him on the ground and took his gun. So they stayed alive long enough to run. Everest didn't know how a knife could possibly even stall some tanks, but this guy was clearly still a good soldier.

Maybe Reslo hadn't considered Redd's connections. Everest rushed off to tell him.

Michaela packed her bags and met Reslo at the Town Gate. They got into a rickety old train that the rebellion had bought for ferrying troops over short distances. Since they had Felcar surrounded and the situation had become somewhat stable at home so they could probably leave for a bit. If things went sour, Reslo's brother Jaksin could handle it. Jaksin was probably a better buddy to have on the battlefield than Reslo was, in most situations. Felcar wasn't really anything worth keeping now, because it turns out that there was only a token army of The Coalition there, and the real army was missing. Tough.

The train started with a wheeze, and off they went to the airport. Reslo leaned over and whispered in Michaela's ear. "So how well do you know Everest?" Michaela thought for a second. "I don't know him too well, but I'd like to know him better. He's pretty quiet, but he's really cute." Reslo's face fell. "How long have you known him?" He asked. Michaela noticed Reslo's reaction. He didn't like her response at all. Which meant.... Well, he..... oh, come on, reader. Figure it out. When a person has spent the last three years on and off fighting a massive force much larger his own, they get a little excited.

Nook was the first one to see the man, from the window of his shop. He spoke with what we call a German accent. The man was about six foot six, with massive, bulging arms that ended in bony hands. His legs were the thickness of a tree trunk, and were a pasty white under matted black hair. His jawbone was firm, his handshake was too. His eyes were straightforward and black, with neatly arranged eyebrows above them. He was dressed in a fine black suit with a scarlet tie, clearly a man of wealth. And he carried a handgun, the newest model.

"Where is Reslo?" His low voice commanded Nook. The Tanuki quivered in his apron. The man grabbed Nook and held him up six inches off the ground. "Where is he!" The man began to reach for his gun. "I don't know. I'm just visiting one of my branches for a routine inspection. I own this place, you know, but I can't possibly be in every town at once." Nook said, smoothly and calmly, the sign of a good businessman. The man threw Nook into a corner of the room, tearing Nook's apron and causing some bone in his body to snap. Nook stood up and hobbled over to the man. "You come in here and throw me into the corner and break my arm and you demand information. I'm going to tell you under one condition. I need you to stand still for about two minutes. Okay?" The man nodded, clearly not the brightest of folk.
Nook rushed to the storage room and yanked the telephone off the wall. He dialed Everest. It went straight to voicemail.  "If you are looking for Twelve, please press one. If you are looking for Everest, please press two." Nook pressed two. Twelve? Twelve of what? Roses? Nook left Everest a voicemail, and started to think the situation through. He grabbed his trusty shotgun, loaded it, and told Timmy and Tommy to stay in the closet until he got them or Everest did. Nook stepped back into the store, shotgun behind his back in his left hand, because his right was at least sprained if not broken and he wanted to use it as little as possible.
"So, I checked my sources and it looks like Reslo recently went on a victory tour of Felcar. He should be getting ready to set off fireworks with some troops at about eleven tonight." Nook watched as the man accepted his lie and gave a grunt. Nook nodded. "I do have one question for you, good sir. What is your name?" The man thought for a moment before pulling out his gun. "You'll never... um... find out." He raised the sidearm at Nook, ready to shoot. He didn't get a chance.

Nook lowered the shotgun and reloaded. The man fell on the ground clutching his arm, now loaded with shotgun pellets. Everest walked in. "Oh, I see. Should I have brought a gun or a shovel?" Nook took the gun from the man and lifted an ID from him. The man still clutched his arm, barely looking away from it. "Very funny. Go get a sidearm from the storage unit and let's interrogate him." Nook dragged him into a lovely chair that was on sale. He grimaced as blood got on it. He looked at the ID. It read Igor Deshki, born in Tuskany, twenty nine years of age, six foot six and a half. Male. Carpet Salesman? Ain't no carpet salesman gonna have a forty thousand Bell suit and a gun like that. The only carpets this guy sold were carpet bombs.
Igor grunted and tried to haul himself off the floor. Nook gave him a thump on the back of the head and he went back down. Everest and Nook carried the unconscious knucklehead to the Police Station where they placed him in a holding cell and put the key in a drawer next to Copper's desk.

The general was dragged up in front of the room. Governor-Dictator Matrow gave him a once over. The spy had told him this was going to happen, that the people besides Reslo would rise. Matrow waved his hand to begin the trial. A well dressed lawyer, one that Matrow knew was extremely biased against the general, began droning on about how General Keil had attempted to start a rebellion against The Coalition and that there was proof of his involvement through smuggling arms to prisoners in the few camps left. General Keil didn't look up at all during his trial, merely staring at the ground as he savored what was most likely his final hours. The two sides did the dance that had been the norm for war criminals, and then came the sentencing, of which Matrow was judge, jury and occasionally executioner.

General Keil was sentenced to death by unknown machine, a particularly lethal way to execute someone. Unknown machines had been around since the very early days of law, and were the first way to kill someone that passed in the courts as humane. There was also the electric chair, but that was more expensive. Keil was given the chance to make a speech before his death. He looked up and faced Matrow squarely in the eye, with a blaze rarely found in mere men.

"You put me in a mock trial and poke fun at my cause. You say it is lost hope, that we are wasting our time. You say that doing what I am doing shall serve no purpose in the end, that we will all fall. And you are right. But I say to you, if one man has found freedom because of the actions that we have taken today, it was worth it. Freedom is a jewel, one that is priceless, and I add it to my crown gleefully. So kill me. Laugh while you can. But when your son shows up on your doorstep with a grenade and a gun and he's telling you to surrender or be slaughtered, remember what happened here. Yes, I know. You have a son. And he has three sons. Good day, gentlemen. And may your prison food be littered with maggots!" He sat back down on the machine with a smile on his face and the executioner slammed the button. He shivered for a moment as the cryogenic freeze seeped into a main artery and then went to his brain. It ignited, and Keil was dead.

Copper and Booker put Igor in handcuffs and boarded the train to the temporary camp where the rebellion was keeping prisoners. Problem solved.

Surprise! You don't have to wait another day!

Reslo was getting off the bus when a deilvery boy came to him with a telegram. "SPIES FOLLOWING YOU STOP FELCAR INVADED NO COALITION THERE STOP KEIL EXECUTED STOP  NO LEADS ON LOCATION OF TC STOP GOOD LUCK FROM EVEREST STOP." He read it and then ripped it up.  "What was that?" Reslo turned. "I'll tell you when no one is around. Make sure we aren't being followed." He strided towards the exit, his powerful legs propelling him through the throngs of civilians, with Michaela struggling to keep up. They made it through the bus station, luggage and all.

Now for the problem: where would they spend the night? There was an inn about fifteen kilometers away, but the sun had already set and they couldn't walk down there without a flashlight. There was a couple of houses here, small ones, but maybe there was a spare couch or two. Reslo went up and knocked on the door of one. Maybe a minute or two of silence, and then a man opened the door. His eyes adjusted for a moment, and then he realized who it was.

"Commander Reslo! What are you doing here at this time of night? Please, please, come inside. No sense staying out there in the cold." Reslo, still trying to figure out where he knew this man from, went in. "So, how have you been since the encampment of Felcar?" So thaaaaaat's where they knew each other... This guy was a colonel during that battle, and he submitted his forms and retired afterwards. What was his name, um, Twelve? No, maybe it was Antonovich. Yeah, that's what it was, Colonel Jones Lee Antonovich of the Third Air Squadron. He helped coordinate the round of mild bombings. It paid to know your soldiers.

"I've been doing wonderfully. I'm here with my.... friend.... Michaela trying to find my cousin in the jungle. He says its very important, and I need to show up right away. Problem is, we need a guide because we have no idea exactly where he is. How well do you know the jungle here?" Antonovich smiled and walked over to a modern dresser in the corner. He took out a crest and an emblem, and then a majestic sword. He held up the sword in one hand and the crest and emblem in the other.

"I am one of his members. I will take you to him tomorrow, until then you will spend the night with me. He saluted Reslo and Michaela and then got out a few blankets and two mats. Antonovich then set them down. "Well, we can talk more in the morning when we're on the trail. Good night." He plodded off down a hallway and they heard a door shut. Reslo and Michaela got into their respective blankets, and fell asleep.

"Hey. Hey. Michaela, Michaela. Wake up. We'll never make it before sundown if you aren't up and ready in about five minutes. We can eat on the way. But you need to wake up like, right now." Michaela sat up straight,  bonking her head on Reslo's. She was already dressed and everything,  merely pretending to be asleep. "You're forgetting that I was the only general ever on the field with my men fighting The Coalition while the rest of them were still in bed. I woke up way before you did, day after day. That hasn't changed." Reslo frowned, about to say something when there was a rap at the door. Reslo moved to answer it. He opened the door and there was a man standing there.

"Now this is a story all about how, my life got flip-turned upside down, and I'd like to take a minute and just sit right there, tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel-Air." Reslo stood there for a minute as the man continued to rap at the door. He shut the door and went inside. Antonovich was in the living room now, talking with Michaela and cleaning a beautiful double barreled shotgun, one of the discontinued Song rifles. Reslo didn't really know why they were called Song, but no doubt there had been some sort of great battle of some sort with these, but that didn't matter. They were ready to leave.

The tanks were in place. Everest and Darryl had spent all night discussing the placement and strategy of the tanks, and the flanking of the troops, and this was the best way. They had taken some of Felcar, block by block. The middle five by six acres were still encased in a wall, one The Coalition had put up in case of invasion. They weren't sure if any troops were there, but they had finally evacuated the civilians from the area, so today Felcar would fall. The soldiers had received their orders: The first wave is to fire their rockets at the wall, then get behind the tanks until the field commander gives the order to fight. The tanks will roll forward and through the gaps in the wall as the second wave of troops flank the city and bust the other parts.

Snipers were in position, instructed to kill any infantry they might see. Officers, again,  assuming there is military presence there, are to be spared. Simply shoot their left leg or the Achilles Tendon, and relieve them of any firearms. Ground troops were to do the same. The third wave was of a new kind of soldier, called paratroopers. They had parachutes stuck on their backs and were supposed to shoot any enemy soldiers fleeing. They would be deployed at the same time the first wave was, because the parachutes made them fall slowly, and surrounding buildings forced the planes to fly higher than what was probably the smartest thing to do. Father had been most gracious with his dwindling supply of tanks, Darryl thought. Generosity was a Matrow thing, after all.

"No, Sergei. I know Dictator Matrow is hunting for me. I'm his son, obviously. The family reunions must be awfully boring with only himself, that sleazy wife of his, Valentina, and the slaves. Hardly a reunion if they see each other everyday. Did Darryl enjoy the tanks? Oh, he hasn't used them yet. Be sure to tell him that I'm proud of him, and that he needs to tell Reslo to contact me. It seems he's gone off the board, which I don't think is entirely a bad thing. If he's going where I think he's going, he'll have Antonovich looking after him. Well, thank you for listening to an old mafia coot drone on and on. You have your orders, Sergei. Do them well. Good day."

Lemanski Evlan Matrow spun around in his chair to face the window. Beneath him, a city brimming with people, a new democracy, was milling about carrying trade goods and working in the markets. The economic crash hadn't affected Matrow City. Yes, it was named Matrow City, though not because of the efforts of Lemanski. It was originally named Central. Then Dictator Matrow, Lemanski's father and Reslo and Darryl's grandfather, though Reslo didn't know it and Darryl wasn't going to say anything. Anyway, Dictator Matrow renamed the city when The Coalition took power, but once Lemanski heard of the crash that was coming he shut down all outside influences for about a month, to keep it form hitting Matrow City. It worked, somewhat. Yes, the people revolted for about the first week of it, but then Lemanski made sure that they knew why, and the people seemed relieved. Problem solved.

Oh, that crazy old man. Matrow Sr, or rather, Dictator Matrow, was an old coot. Positively senile. Rumor had it that he just ordered a squad of infantry to invade Onett. Onett! The city had been abandoned for years, following the Great Song War. Then again, they would make for easy pickings for his police force. Matrow Sr. had clearly gone over the deep end. Lunacy was his game now.
