When it comes out on June 9th for the US, I plan on resetting a few times to get a nice town. I'm going to try to write down the differences in landscapes to help out the ACC. It would be cool if others do the same thing if they think that they might restart several times. I hope that I'll be able to help a lot here when I get the game. Go New Leaf!

What I would rather see are a bunch of screenshots of the maps from the Japanese version so I can decide what I want now and not waste time once I get the game.

There's a thread called "maps" that show many.

Edit: There were maps I had missed in there before. Woo!

I like figuring out what I want beforehand so that if when Rover shows me the maps for New Leaf I'll know right away whether they're close to what I want or if I should move to the next one/reset. Plus it gives me something to do before the game releases

The issue is we will never have every map available. They are randomly generated for each player, not drawn from a pile.

Nintendo did this to make sure people are less likely to get similar towns.

I'll probably pick from the first 4, looking for a nice peninsula to put my tent.

That was what I was thinking too, CanadianScotch, so it'll help if more than just one person helps out. There'll always be slight differences, but there are some that stay constant. For example, you can count on varied forms of hills, ponds, gates, etc. I don't know how to post screenshots, but I can describe what I find out. I'll try to discover as much as I can.

I've been a picky person about my town layout in the past, and I've always hated that silly habit of mine when restarting a new game. This time, I'm just going to go with one of the four options they give me because I want to just wing it.
Well, unless all the maps have major problems--
As unoriginal as this sounds, I'm probably going to be hoping for a peninsula as well. Anytime I would restart for a better map on previous games, that's what I always hoped for. The closest I'd ever get was having my house on an 'island' surrounded by the river, but it was always placed in an awkward spot.

I always thought the towns were just randomly generated? I've never seen one town even come close to looking like another. What's all this talk on constant? I'll probably end up having a town looking identical to another's?

Best of luck!

When I said constant, I meant similar. For example, you can compare two hills on their slopes/shapes, but their grass/dirt patterns are probably different. Towns are randomly generated, but I've restarted a lot which resulted in familiar patterns. Some were harder to get than others. I didn't mean to cause confusion. As for your plan for starting New Leaf, it's not a bad idea. I don't think that you have to worry about your house placement because from one of the Nintendo trailers, it looks like you can pick where exactly you want it. Hope this helps, COURTNEY97.

aswe will be starting our games in spring/summer and therefore have green grass is there a way to tell what grass shape leads you to have snow which is the shape of stars on the ground?

One tactic I've done to see my snow pattern in previous games is to set up my town as if it were from the winter of the next year. Then when you see the snow, you can time travel backwards to the real date and nothing will change or be lost!

I believe this kind of information will be posted online, and as Swurve said circle grass leads to star snow, you may take that as fact or if you really want to try it yourself I highly recommend starting bogus games, noting the grass shape, time travelling to winter, noting snow shape and restarting the game to a new town until you are satisfied with your data.

I only say this because not enough is known yet about the effects of time travelling in New Leaf. In City Folk it got pretty tricky so you know the game is programmed to catch it, just to be safe I would not plan on time travelling without starting a new town afterward that you are NOT going to time travel with, until more knowledge is out on the effects.
