I have no problem planting trees bought from Tom Nook. Same with flowers. But I have fruit that I got from other animals in town as well as coconuts that washed ashore. However, I have been unable to plant the fruit. Have tried with and without digging a hole first. Tried dragging the fruit across the pocket screen, hovering over the fruit, you name it and I likely have tried it. Do I need to plant more flowers before I can grow fruit? Or am I doing something wrong? I recently got the first upgrade to Nook's but am still paying the mortgage on my house. I am wondering if perhaps one has to play the game for a certain amount of time before you can plant fruit. Does anyone have any ideas?

Dig a hole, keep your shovel in your hands, and select the fruit while still standing next to the hole. It should give you the option to plant it.

Also, one other note on planting fruit. There are some spots in your town that will not grow a tree no matter what you do. The only way to be sure a fruit will grow is by chopping down a tree & planting the fruit in the hole where the tree was. It is best to do this when planting fruit that is foreign & especially if you only have 1 of that kind of fruit because its the only way you can be certain that the tree will grow. This way, you do not lose the fruit & end up with none of it.

Thank you for the helpful note! I am going to do that until I have enough fruit that I can afford to lose a few. I only wish one could carry more fruit before all the pockets are full and you have to head to Nook's to sell them.

Fill you letter holder with opened letters. You can store fruit and other items in them until you want to put them back in your pockets. It doesn't work for bugs or fish, though.

Thanks for the Tip Kaylee! Now that I am planting fruit trees, this will save a lot of time when harvesting! I hope to Wi-Fi with you in the future. My town is not much now, but you can visit if you like.

Thank you so much for the kind offer Val. I have not set up the wi-fi yet because my town is just starting to look the way I want it to. I haven't even started planting flowers to make hybrids yet. I did make a original pattern and have laid some tile paths down with the pattern on them. And two animals in my town are now wearing my pattern! But I want to "sculpt" my town some more before I wi-fi. I just got my axe the other day and was waiting for Tom Nook to sell it so I could clear some trees that were in the way. I have been proceeding slowly due to having a really bad fall 2 weeks ago where I: sprained my ankle, tore up my knee, and scraped my chest and arm badly. Got a Tetanus shot and took a course of antibiotic but it didn't work. Ankle is infected and just went to the Doctor yesterday for new prescriptions. I went to a clinic initially so that x-rays could be taken but they weren't that great. So wound up going to my Doctor  and this time I asked for something for the pain. AC: CF has helped me relax and not think about my injuries too much. Now if I could only tell the Bus Driver to shut up when I am riding to the city or going home from it! I know I have rambled on somewhat, but it feels good to get it out of my system I really like the community of Adults here and I look forward to wi-fi ing with some of you in the future!

Dont feel like you havet o have the perfect town, all done, before you invite people...and/or come visit others. Of course, you have to decide when the time is right, but somteimes visiting others can give you a lift you can't get when you're playing on your own. I've been playing since the game came out (and game cube before that) so my town is pretty much done, so I enjoy meeting new people, helping them out.
I'm so sorry to hear about your fall and hope you're well on your way to recouping now that you've got checked out and new meds. NOT fun at all. I can see where the game would help take your mind off things. I use it to relax also
