I've been working hard on my town for several weeks now.  I have pattern pathways and gold roses lining most of them.  Lo and behold, I signed on today to find that a new villager plopped his house down RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MAIN FREAKIN ROAD IN MY TOWN, taking out about 12 gold roses with his house.  This messes everything up, being that I would have to chop a bazillion trees down and  reroute at least 3-4 roads in odd directions.  I HATE that you can't decide where villagers put their houses without hacking, in City Folk especially since if you're working on beautifying your town, you'll have to have paths to prevent desertification.  Ugh.  It's almost enough to make me wanna quit playing now.  SO MAD!

Their homes will always appear on a sign post but it's true you can never tell which sign post it will be.  I just make sure my landscaping goes far enough in front of the signposts so that if a house were to appear the road would pass in front of it rather than through it.

The houses take up the x area and the sign post is the P in this diagram:

xxxx
xxPx
   x

basically that little x in the front is the un-diggable and un-patternable space right in front of their door

Not sure if you already knew that, sorry if it isn't helpful
Unfortunately all you can do is make sure nothing is near any sign post to prevent a house from ruining it

I know.  It's all just frustrating, especially when the signs are weirdly placed to begin with, ya know?  I mean I have a sign that's basically right in front of a bridge.  Why would you put a villager's house right in front of a bridge, Nintendo??  That's dumb.  I hope in Animal Crossing for 3DS, we get to choose where the signs go.

Ya I know I have some signs in really bad places - i also have one right in front of a bridge and also theres a sign right behind chester's house so i doubt i could even see the other guy's house is it appears there. <. <

this one vilager of mine literally uut moved in front of my still-growing coconut tree on the beach so my trees in the area just stopped growing..they arent dead theyre just stuck in 2-day-old tree stage -.-
he better move out before the big coconut beatles come out because i dont think they can spawn on runty baby trees..

its tabby his house looks like this c is for coconut:

Yeesh.  I'm sorry.  That coconut thing must have really been annoying.  I've been hitting Mac's house with my shovel and axe ever since he moved in earlier today.  Hopefully he takes the hint and skips town quickly.

I hate it when this happens too D:

Because there's so many signs placed about in CF I only use pattern roads in WW, I managed to weave the patterns around the signs and still connect them to every major landmark such as Museum, Town Hall, etc.....

Honestly I really do hope in AC:JO they fix this and let us choose where each sign goes or at least let's us move them a little~

thats the correct way the O is the signpost.
Shirviu was trying to help, but that is wrong i would mark all the signposts 'cause routes are always possible around all of them be happy you dont have a villager right in front of a bridge..... now THAT is annoying x_x

There really isn't much of a way for me to significantly path around the signs in a way that makes sense.  They're just too numerous and close together, I so I guess I'm just gonna have to take my chances.  Like I said earlier in this post, I have a sign right in front of a bridge so it's only a matter of time...

I was very lucky. My first neighbor moved in 1 space away from my path and the second moved in where the previous neighbor had left.

I should have just started over but I'm always so disoriented when I start a new town as to where everything is that it would have been at least a week before I'd noticed, "Hmmm, there's signs freakin' everywhere.  This is not good."  lol

Spitfire, shirviu is correct.
The signpost is always where the door is placed.

And, I hate it so much too!
I also hate how after someone moves, there is a huge dirt spot where they had lived. It's so annoying to have to constantly regrow that area.

I also hate how the signposts are placed. The house I chose had such a nice location. It was on a cliff corner with a great view.
However, I didn't notice there was a signpost RIGHT in front of my house.
Now Kody moved in and his house is right in front of my great view.. -.-

Spitfire's diagram is the correct one. When I'm laying paths or planting flowers, I lay out patterns around the signpost as a guide. Works every time! I layed paths around all the houses and connected them with walkways to reach all the important buildings. It works pretty well, but I also have houses that are too close together. I agree that we should have been able to decide where houses should go!

^thank you for saying that it is correct. :3

ACCFMaddie, youre right with the signpost being the door, but i just dont want anyone making a path that goes before that one dead space in front of the door in her picture representation to just discover that a new villager has placed their house on top of their path. x_x its unfair to leave that uncorrected

I also learned the hard way about planting flowers in the wrong spots, I would be so upset to find a house where there once was a flower garden, which is why I use the patterns when I'm laying out my paths and flowers.

Pippy moved in my town a few days ago. I'm regrowing sign area grass and I took my chances.. There's also an area that sandwiches my road between a sign and a beach. I don't want my road touching the edges of bays/rivers/houses/and signs, but this sign sandwiches it in to where if some one moves in a small strip of it will be on my road.

Fortunately, Pippy chose the best spot ever- A spot generally close to my road, lots of villagers in that area, no flowers around that sign, no sandwiches. Perfect!

Spitfire, if you agree with me that the signpost is where the door is, then wouldn't the correct diagram be this?

Not a wall, no, but there is a fence. The door is in a little from where the fence is. When a house was in place, I put patterns all around it, and the hole that was left behind was shaped like the second picture you have. (B is the border of patterns)
[color=purple]BBBBBB
[color=purple]B[color=orange]XXXX[color=purple]B
B[color=orange]XX[color=brown]O[color=orange]X[color=purple]B
B[color=orange]XXXX[color=purple]B
BBB[color=orange]X[color=purple]BB
BBBBB

[color=black]This would lead me to believe either that the fence was that extra line in front of the door, or the signpost is not the door.

Basically, the signpost is not where the door is, it's 1 place above the door.

I use a double path too and I feel like although that makes it harder to landscape around all those pesky signs (especially when they're either in big clumps together or in oddball places like in front of bridges or cliffs), it makes it easier for visitors from other towns to stay on the path since it's wider and more accommodating.  I thought about changing it to a single lane path so it would be easier to snake paths around the signs, but then I feel like visitors from other towns would feel like they had to walk a tightrope in order to stay on it.  *sigh*  I guess I'll just keep doing what I'm doing and anytime a villager talks about moving, just stalk them relentlessly till they change their mind.  lol
