As the title says, we'd like to hear your suggestions for an update to the Pattern Maker. Over the years and also on a thread we had about this recently, we have gathered a few ideas and listed them below. Please read that list before you post because your idea may already be in there. However, if you've got a new idea or an amendment to one that is shown, please post and we'll add it to the list.

As before, please understand that creating this thread doesn't mean that all the ideas listed will be, or can be, implemented.

UPDATE - As posted in the Work List thread in August, the new Pattern Maker was in Beta Testing but we put it on hold to work on other features while we waited for updates for the 3DS game. We will endeavour to add in the 3DS updates before releasing the new Pattern Maker to the community.

Please keep an eye on the first post of this thread. Anything shown in blue has been added to the new Pattern Maker.

Suggestions

Alert when specific Members add a new pattern - Some members have a fanbase due to the quality of their patterns so this feature would allow members to tag particular pattern designers and receive an alert when they publish a new design.

City Folk colour palettes - This would also need to be adaptable to show other palettes from future AC games. Depending on how this is set up, either the pattern creator or Modmins (or both) will possibly need to be able to move patterns to a different section.

Coding - Use HTML5 or something else other than Flash.

Comments - Allow comments/discussion on patterns. Could possibly be linked to the Patterns Board so that making the first comment under the pattern automatically creates a thread on the Patterns Board, preferably with an automated first post containing a centred image of the pattern. A limited number of recent comments would be viewable directly under the pattern itself and all comments should be reportable.

Copying and Pasting - Copy and paste parts of the tile to other places in the tile.

Default view should show published patterns only - This will eliminate half finished or personal patterns from view. It will also cut down on UTs sent in for ''junk'' patterns and also make it easier to look for patterns.

Downloading/Uploading patterns - Downloading and uploading patterns but this would require other changes first, such as the palette. May or may not be separate to QR Codes.

Editing published patterns - Sometimes people later want to improve their pattern or notice an error. So it would be handy to allow editing even after a pattern is published. Also, allow patterns to be unpublished.

Fill tools - Same as that in the game. Even if all tools can't be implemented, possibly add in the paint can tool which will fill a large area with one colour.

Filters - For designers, this would mean that they assign their patterns correctly. Eg, assigning a pattern as a Pro-Pattern would automatically bring up 4 tiles to complete. It would also allow current CF patterns created in WW colours to be viewed correctly. For those looking at patterns, this would allow more specific searching for patterns. (eg a combination of game ID, interior design, landscaping, pro-pattern, murals, wallpaper, furniture, paths, season, anicro etc)

Hide patterns from view - Although the hidden patterns would still be viewable to Modmins and also reportable, having the option to hide patterns will enable people to remove incomplete patterns from view. It would also allow completed portions of a Mural/Pro Pattern to be hidden until the entire set of patterns is finished.

Murals/Pro Patterns shown as a whole - This would likely involve first adding a function to separate patterns into different types eg, single tile, Murals, Pro Patterns. The view for the latter two would need to work differently. Possibly Pro Patterns showing as 4 tiles instead of the large single tile. Depending on how this is set up, either the pattern creator or Modmins (or both) will possibly need to be able to move patterns to a different section.

Pattern Contest winners section - A section to show pattern contest winners and possibly top 5 entries too.

QR Codes - for sharing of patterns.

Random button - Be able to look at random patterns by clicking on a button.

Rotating images - Show image as a whole and rotating. Especially useful for umbrellas, hats and pro-patterns.

Saving/Flagging favourite patterns - Similar to flagging threads, these patterns would appear in a favourites or flagged section in the Patterns section.

Statistics page - To show things such as top patterns, recent patterns, most viewed, most voted, most commented etc. Could be done by month, year and overall.

Templates - This would work in two ways. Firstly, members creating patterns can choose to use any of their previous patterns as templates for new patterns that they are creating. Secondly, when creating a pattern and choosing to publish it, there could be another option to show it as a template that can be used by any member of the community. When a template created by one member, is used by another member, the final pattern should show that it was created using a template and who the template creator was.

Undo/Redo button - Probably a big gripe amongst pattern designers is not being able to undo errors especially when the pattern is complex and when a new colour has been accidentally placed on top of another.

View all other parts when creating Pro Patterns and Murals - Those creating Murals and Pro Patterns would find it handy to see previous pattern tiles created. I can see this working if pattern designers are able to first choose how many tiles their pattern is made up of. This would then show a screen with a main tile to work on and the chosen number of blank thumbnails on the right of the main tile and also in grid format. Before starting the pattern, the member would choose where it should be shown in the blank tiles.

Voting system - Currently the voting is random. You can only vote for the pattern that appears on screen. If you are searching for patterns and come across one that you like, you can't vote for it. We should look at whether the voting system is now tedious due to the sheer quantity of patterns that are in the database. If however, people prefer the system as it is, it would be worth looking into keeping that system but also adding in the ability to vote on specific patterns too. This would allow the patterns that people genuinely like, to get votes. Although this may encourage votes from friends, it would eventually balance out as many in the community use the pattern database.

Other changes could be to:
- separate freehand and Anicro patterns in the voting system
- change the points to show overall instead of average
- set a limit on how old patterns can be
- not favour patterns made by active members
- ensure that patterns averaging a certain number don't show for voting. Eg - patterns averaging 7+ are the only ones that appear for voting, thus making the Top 10 more competitive.

Warnings - Warning when publishing patterns about the Junk Pattern rule. Warning when reporting an unpublished pattern that it can't be reported as junk but should be reported under another rule if warranted.

Wendell/DLC patterns shown as templates - If we had a templates system, there could be a section created by Devs which show the Wendell/DLC patterns. In the guides section, Wendell patterns could be clickable patterns that then go directly the pattern template created by the Staff.

Thanks for your post because it reminded me that I didn't add in a link to the Patterns Board which was an alternative suggestion to commenting directly under a pattern.

I'll go add that in now.

I have three suggestions for the Pattern Maker. I hope they can help improve the Pattern Maker in even more ways.
Pro Patterns - When Jerad and Nigel designed the Pattern Maker, they probably designed it to be a simple was to trade patterns to wear as shirt. After City Folk introduced the concept of Pro Patterns, it now required somebody to make four patterns to transfer a pattern in the same way. This would be simplified if members were able to make Pro Patterns using the ACC Pattern Maker. On the display page, the patterns could be could possibly be arranged in a diamond shape.
AC:3DS Pallets - Since development on a new Pattern Maker may not start until after the release of the next installment in the Animal Crossing series, it would make sense to try to include the color pallets that will be used in AC:3DS. The only problem with this would be that we still don't what colors will be used for the AC:3DS pallets.
Pattern in Post - To expand on the possibility of the first comment starting a new thread on the Pattern Board, I think it would make sense to have an image containing the pattern to appear in the first post. I think it would either look good if the image was centered at the top of the post or if the image would show up on the right side of the post where an advertisement would normally show up on the first post of an unread thread. If the latter location was chosen, the dimensions of the image could be the same as an ad on the first unread post in a thread. Text could also wrap around the pattern in the same way it would an advertisement.

Thanks Superpie - I remember that you contributed to the last thread.

With regards the Pro-Patterns, it's in the list above. Quote:
"• Murals/Pro Patterns shown as a whole - This would likely involve first adding a function to separate patterns into different types eg, single tile, Murals, Pro Patterns. The view for the latter two would need to work differently. Possibly Pro Patterns showing as 4 tiles instead of the large single tile. Depending on how this is set up, either the pattern creator or Modmins (or both) will possibly need to be able to move patterns to a different section."
I may have missed the point of what you were saying so feel free to clarify if you think the existing information in the first post isn't enough. As for the diamond shape, wouldn't it be better to either show the 4 patterns as 4 squares within a larger square or side by side as it is in CF?

With regards the 3DS palettes, unfortunately, much of the 3DS updates will be after the game is released as that's when we will begin to get more information. However, just as with other parts of the site, we are intending to ensure that 3DS will be added wherever needed. In the part that mentions CF colour palettes in the first post, it mentions that future versions of the game would also need palettes.

As for the pattern in the first post, that would be a good idea if we go the route of linking to the Patterns board. I'll add that into the first post shortly.

Save For Later: Some people create a pattern but never get a time to finish it. If you could save incomplete patterns for later without publishing them, that would be nice.

I know, but I mean a way so people can't see it. That way a pattern would not be spoilt before its release.

You can just submit a pattern and not publish it. That way, you can edit the pattern without people being able to see it. Correct me if I'm wrong, though.

Ooooh! Nice one Boomit. I've had that same problem and have had to state ''Incomplete'' in the title.

So hiding patterns would probably be the best way to show that suggestion. It would also allow people to complete Murals and Pro-Patterns without having half/some on show.

I'll add it to the requests in the first post. One of the other requests was to change the default so that published patterns are on show and people would have to choose otherwise. If we don't get the hiding option in, I'm sure we would be able to change the default which will half solve the problem.

This is kind of a combination of ideas, but what if we completely overhauled the view pattern screen?  We could have commets, pattern history, voting, ratings, details (what game, color palate, aincro, part of mural), and other stuff

Also a stats screen. Top patterns, recent patterns, most viewed, most voted, most commented, stuff like that.

Would it be possible to move the Pattern Maker to HTML5? Flash is becoming less compatible with devices, and can make laptops run extremely warm.

yankees24cano - I believe that is the general idea as it would be quite cumbersome to use if separate.

"Also a stats screen. Top patterns, recent patterns, most viewed, most voted, most commented, stuff like that."
yankees24cano - I'll add that idea to the list.

"What can we do to get these changes/new features implemented?"
semerl - There is nothing you can do yourself to get these changes implemented. We have a team of Researchers and Developers that discuss, make and contribute to the changes.

"Would it be possible to move the Pattern Maker to HTML5? Flash is becoming less compatible with devices, and can make laptops run extremely warm."
Dimentio95 - I don't know whether the R&Ds working on this currently have opted for something else but I'll add it to the suggestions above and let them know about the request.

This might fall under "Murals/Pro Patterns shown as a whole" but I'd love to see a rotating preview of Pro & regular patterns similar to how a pattern is shown in Nook's catalog - with the pattern on the standard dress maker's form.

Since we already have a preview within the Pattern Maker for how a pattern will look, it should be possible to put the 4 patterns for a Pro Design together (showing the Pro pattern as a whole) & the Flash aspect of the Pattern Maker should allow for a pattern to rotate to allow the creator (as well as the viewer once the pattern is saved) to see how the pattern will look on the finished product.

This can also be expanded to show the pattern as it would look if used as an umbrella, hat, carpet & wallpaper as well as build for the future view of patterns as furniture upholstry.

I'd love to be able to search for patterns based on the game they were made for. A lot of the time, I find absolutely gorgeous clothing patterns that look downright horrendous when made on Wild World because they were created for City Folk. Maybe alongside the search bar, we could have some kind of filter to look for patterns made for a specific game?

This would also mean that when a user uploads/publishes a pattern, they should be able to select what game they've created it for from a little drop down menu or such. If they intend the pattern to be multipurpose, perhaps a 'not game specific' option, or something to that effect?

Thanks for posting as I really needed to update this.

The staff were discussing this a while back and your suggestion was one that we also had decided would be worth exploring along with being able to search for anicro/freehand, wallpaper/path/flooring/(furniture for 3DS), clothes/pro-patterns (for CF, possibly 3DS too) and special occasions. The idea would be that the creator would assign these categories when creating the pattern and members could select multiple categories for a quicker search. Eg, members could choose:

CF --> Freehand --> Path --> Halloween.

I'll compare our suggestions to the first post in this list and update it shortly.

Thanks again for the nudge.

I think there should be a feature that lets us delete patterns in bulk. There could be check boxes and you could check off the patterns you want deleted and then just hit delete.

A while back I had to delete over 200 patterns and it took forever.
