Can you clarify what you bought? Was it a wireless router?

The first thing you may want to try is seeing if another wireless device works on the connection. You may just be missing something simple. For example you are not supplying the laptop with an internet connection, or you have not installed the drivers using the software that came with the device.Another possibility is that sometimes with these devices, you have to "open up" the connection.

Do you know the brand/model of your USB adapter (the company that makes it)?

That helped. Here are the installation instructions. It looks pretty complicated to set up and use though. Also, the biggest problem is that it only works with Windows XP -- at least from what the reviews say and the compatibility notes. If you have bought a computer within the last few years, you're probably not running Windows XP. You're probably running Vista or 7.

If you able, I would suggest that you return the device to where you bought it from and buy a wireless router. They don't cost much more, and are generally faster.

EDIT: If your windows don't look like they do in the installation instructions, you're not running Windows XP.
