1. Press the 'Return Change' button. 2. Kick the machine. 3. Go to whoever owns the machine(like the reception desk or the sports centre or whatev.) and complain until they return my money. 4. If they don't or there's no-one to complain to, give up.
That's what I do. If I'm in a rush I just forget about it. It's only like 50p anyway.
Press the return change button then stare at it blankly for a while wishing it would give me back my money, and knowing no good was going to come from wanting chocolate...
Honestly, I very rarely ever use the things, so if one fritzes on me, I bang on the machine until someone notices and complain loudly until they give me my money back. Not very mature, I know.

I'd try the vending machine besides it. I won't go nuts for a few cents.

I usually exchange a few choice words with the machine while pushing the change return button and banging on it to try and get the change to fall down. Then I usually give up and move on to something else.

I think I've only ever had that happen to me once, I just went to the owners, and said "It done stolzes mah moneiz" and got them to get the item I wanted.

In the event that it steals my money, if possible I would phone up the company and quote the machine number explaining my situation. If that wasn't possible, I'd just kick the machine to attempt to get it back and if that sets the alarm off, I'll follow Alex's footsteps and cry.

I'd push the return change button multiple times, push the button of the food/drink I want multiple times, and when all else fails, I would complain to a nearby worker.
