Chapter 4-Part One Jessie opened her eyes drowsily, she didn’t want to leave the dream, she wanted to know what happened next and tried to force herself to stay asleep. She eventually had to give in and rubbed her eyes whilst pondering the meaning of this strange experience. She felt like she had almost been watching herself. She couldn’t remember any of the people’s faces, but somehow knew who they were. Was this the future, her wishes, or just something her brain had conjured up in its confused situation? What do I actually want? I don’t even know. Am I going to just lead this boring life here? She sat up on the sofa and glanced at the clock, 01:15pm flashed on the electronic screen. Her stomach was not hungry, but a strange feeling hung around inside her. What should I do today? I can’t stay inside, but where am I meant to go? Jessie thought for a moment and decided to just walk around town, even though she could hear the rain beating down on her rooftop. She went to her room to get changed and looked out of the window. The rain was melting the snow and grey clouds lined the even greyer sky. She slung on a baggy T-shirt and hoodie, and pulled on her oldest, yet still favourite, grey jeans. She dragged the hood over her not brushed, greasy hair and sunk her shoulders as she walked to the door. She opened it and sitting on the step outside was Alex. Jessie screamed and Alex quickly stood up and turned around. “What are you doing here?” Jessie asked in shock and confusion. “I was just…I was just waiting for you,” his cheeks turned pink. “Why?” “I just think…I think you’re a really nice person, and I thought we could be friends.” “I...I’ll think about it.” Jessie ran away, unsure where she was going, but she had to get away. She had to be alone with her thoughts to try and work out what was happening.

Chapter 4-Part Two of Two Where am I going? What am I doing? Her mind was shooting question after question at itself, none of which answerable. She ran, with no direction, no ideas, and nothing was planned or organised. Her mind whizzed, trying to think of a place to go, where she could be alone and talk to herself. Her house was too cluttered and full of memories, just wandering around, anyone could see her. Where is there that no one goes? That no one particularly cares for? She discarded possible locations, one after another, My house, The Roost, The Town Hall, Nook’s, Able Sisters’… There was only one place left now, The Museum, Blathers would be sleeping, and maybe the fish would have some answers. So Jessie ran, she could feel her legs becoming more achy and heavier, but finally she reached the glowing entrance of the grand white building. Like last time she visited, she tip-toed, but this time turned right, instead of left. She made her way to the smaller room of fish, it was for sea fish, they ranged from the very common, sea bass, to the rare, sharks and coelacanth. She sat with her back against the wall, and stared into the tank, following a fish until it was out of view, and sometimes catching her reflection in the shiny glass. “What should I do? I mean, he’s such a nice guy, but what am I getting myself into? Nothing’s the same anymore and there’s too much change going on at once. I’m just confused and I don’t seem to know anything anymore.” Jessie stared at the fish, willing one of them to open its mouth and give some answers, but even they weren’t interested. “I would love to be his friend, but what would other people think of me? Oh, that’s all I ever think about, what other people would say. Why do I care for their opinion? Why can’t I just let myself go?” Jessie took off her glasses, then rubbed her eyes, leaving her head in her hands. She sighed, then whispered a promise to herself, “It seems, this is the only way forward. I will not care what anyone else thinks. I will be happy as me. I will apologise to Alex. I will,” she paused, “I will try my best to be me.” Although, she had now decided and found an answer, she stayed sat one the tiled floor. It’s so peaceful here, it’s calm and it’s a nice place to be. She took one last deep breath in the room, then stood up and left.

Thanks, it's at a standstill at the moment, I'm just not sure what to write. I'll try to come up with another chapter soon. Sleegi's Fanfic competition didn't help with the lack of ideas.

Chapter 5 As Jessie left the museum she could feel doubt staring to whisper in her ear, she could feel its cold breath on the nape of her neck. It giggled to itself; wicked stars glittered in its dark black eyes. It started to tell her she couldn’t do it, tell her she wasn’t brave enough. It ran its fingers through the files in her brain, files of her thoughts. It reminded her of every other promise of this kind she had made, that she had never kept them. That was the seed of doubt, and as Jessie left and continued walking she could feel the seed, germinating, growing at rapid pace. A new start? This is never going to work. Why am I…? What am I…? It’s never going to happen. I can’t stop myself from being hurt by words. Oh, it all made sense in my head.
Jessie wanted answers, a reason, some guidance or help, but she was given nothing. She was worried, what would people think if she said something, did something. She imagined their reactions at her making some pathetic attempt at fitting in and having fun. Urgh, in two days I have to torture myself at Kitty’s party. I’m gonna be laughed at more than a clown in a circus, and poked fun at, and what are they all gonna think? Why do I care what they think? They’re all so stuck up and shallow, why do I care? I can just pretend I’m ill and can’t go, can’t I? Or is that wrong? And already I’m not happy to be me, how can I win? What’s the point in trying? Giving up was so easy, it was like stopping when you hadn’t started. Jessie kept putting this thought off in her head, somewhere in her subconscious she knew she hadn’t even put in any effort. As always, she chose to avoid people, and avoid herself, Jessie didn’t like challenging herself, not emotionally anyway.
She kept walking, wherever her feet would take her, just keeping her head down and shoulders hunched. “Jessie! Jessie is that you?” Jessie flicked her head and saw Kitty striding towards her, a huge grin on her perfect face. She opened her arms, obviously expecting a hug, as Kitty approached Jessie opened her arms too, and carefully placed her arms around Kitty’s back in an awkward embrace. “Are you all set for Saturday?” “Erm…yeah. Be sure to see me there.” “Good good, don’t worry, it’ll be lots of fun.” Kitty told her reassuringly, but almost mockingly. “Be sure to bring your best smile!” she said cheerily as she walked away. “Don’t worry, I will.” replied Jessie with false enthusiasm. She waved and brought a hesitating fake smile to her mouth.
Jessie’s feet turned in the direction of home, home, sweet home. Not so sweet for Jessie, she had to choose something to wear for Saturday, and today was Thursday. She reached the familiar shape and sighed in relief, and boredom at the thought of having to choose an outfit.
She approached her wardrobe; she hadn’t bought new clothes in months. Jeans, old T-shirts, hoodies, nothing party-ish, all dark colours. It was time for improvisation or a trip to the Able Sisters. Jessie pondered her decision, and after some thought she chose to go and buy something new, which she would probably never wear again and would end up where she could never find it. She stepped out yet again, hopefully this should be a shorter and less awkward trip. Jessie laughed to herself and smiled at the prospect of buying something new I’ll buy something bright, but not pink, definitely not pink…

Chapter 6 Jessie examined each item of clothing at the Able Sisters. At least there’s nothing pink, it gives me a bit more choice… Blue… how about blue? Yeah, that’s an OK colour isn’t it? I can wear that Deep Blue Tee and a Star hairpin. Finally I have sorted out an outfit. And it didn’t even take that long. Outfit sorted, now time to apologise. Jessie paid and left, the golden sun was now slightly bigger than a half circle, as it met the horizon. The sky around it glowed a very light orange, and as one looked further away became a deep lipstick pink which faded into the pale blue sky. Her eyes absorbed the landscape; the beauty of a sunset was something she could never understand, glorious poems had been written about them, but it was something she could never see. She could never appreciate the disappearance of this magnificent ball of fire, the way it would come and go at almost the same time every day and no one would hear it, it wouldn’t make a sound as it shuffled past. Now soon enough it would depart for another day and hide on the other side of the earth, and the moon would come to take its place. The moon, its gentle pearly light was no harm to eyes, it would caress the ground as a full moon for a few days a month, and for a few days it would be invisible, a black sphere in a deep blue sky.
It was a race against light now, fighting against the last few minutes of sunlight. She dragged her tired legs forward, and willed the sun to freeze for a few minutes, and wait a bit longer before it disappeared. She knocked on the door, Come on, come on. Please be here. Jessie waited, praying for an answer from behind the wall. I’ll try at the Roost now. Jessie turned to leave, then the door opened, she spun around, not quite shocked, but just relieved. “I’m so sorry, I wasn’t thinking, I think you’re really nice, and…” her mind ran out of words, she stopped mid-babble. She watched as Alex’s face flipped from a confused stare to a huge grin. Jessie hugged him, “Does that mean you forgive me?” “Well, I guess I have to now. Shall we go inside?” Jessie nodded.
The sun had now hidden behind the edge the world, Jessie was still talking to Alex. In the small living room, they were sat facing each other, a small fire crackled every so often just to remind them it was there, guarding them from the cold. The sound of knuckles against wood interrupted their conversation. Who could it be at this time of night? Both looked at each other questioningly, Alex rose, Jessie mirrored him. They went to the door and he opened it. Two travellers, both under average height, both with glasses, large rucksacks weighed down on their backs. For a minute both parties stared in silence. A deep male voice broke the awkward looks, “We’re looking for a place to stay. We only need one room and we won’t cause a fuss.” “You can stay with me; I have a bigger house than this.” “You sure about that?” Alex whispered to her. She nodded, “Don’t worry, I’ll be fine. In fact, I should be getting back now, you two coming?” “I’ll walk you back.” Alex said quickly.
The four walked in the cool wind and the light of the crescent moon. “What are your names?” “I’m Daniel, and this is Sophie,” the girl smiled, Jessie was unsure whether she meant it or not, “You?” “I’m Jessie.” “Alex.” His voice was flat and almost cold towards the question. They trudged along in uncomfortable silence, and reached Jessie’s house. She opened the door, “Make yourselves at home, sorry about all the mess and so on.” “Don’t worry it’s fine,” Daniel reassured her, “Which is our room then?” “I’ll just show you,” Jessie gave Alex a look. “I guess I’ll be off then.” Alex gave a forced smile, and if you listened closely you could hear him sigh as he closed the door behind him.
