15/06/2010 Nintendo introduces glasses-free 3D gaming and unleashes the industry’s best franchises in entirely new ways
LOS ANGELES, 15 June, 2010 – Nintendo is raising the bar – again.
Nintendo changed the world of video games with Touch Screen gaming on the Nintendo DS in 2004. Nintendo then pioneered the motion-controlled gaming revolution with the Wii console and the Wii Remote controller back in 2006. Today the company unveils an even more immersive gaming experience: Nintendo 3DS™.
At the E3Expo today, Nintendo gave the world the first look at a portable system that lets people view games in 3D, without the need for special glasses. Nintendo also announced a substantial list of upcoming games for Nintendo 3DS, the Wii console and the Nintendo DS family of systems – a lineup that reads like a who’s who of some of the greatest franchises in video game history with a completely new look and feel.
“The additional dimension of depth in 3D makes it easier for players to judge distances while giving developers a new tool to create games and experiences that play with both height and depth,” said Nintendo video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, who pioneered the fully rendered 3D video game world with Super Mario 64.
Nintendo 3DS comes with a 3.53-inch top screen and a 3.02-inch bottom Touch Screen. It has three cameras – one inner and two outer – to deliver the 3D effect and take 3D pictures. It includes a motion sensor, a gyro sensor and even a Slide Pad that allows 360-degree analogue input. At the E3Expo, Nintendo showed attendees a range of games and applications for Nintendo 3DS that reinvent some of the industry’s most beloved franchises. These include:
* Kid Icarus: Uprising, the long-awaited franchise follow-up to the NES classic. * Mario Kart, which shows off the potential of driving and tossing bananas in 3D. * Nintendogs + cats, a new version of the best-selling nintendogs franchise that lets players interact even more with their virtual puppies – and kittens! * PilotWings Resort, a flying simulation that lets players soar above Wuhu Island. * Animal Crossing, a new instalment of the charming community-building franchise. * StarFox 64 3D, a game that demonstrates the true distance and depth of outer space using Nintendo’s well-known franchise. * Steel Diver, a new submarine-navigation game from Nintendo. * Paper Mario, which brings paper-based 2D environments to life.
Nintendo 3DS also comes to market with the strongest third-party support of any video game system in Nintendo history. Games on display at the Nintendo booth at the E3Expo include:
* DJ Hero 3D from Activision * RESIDENT EVIL REVELATIONS from Capcom * The Sims 3 from Electronic Arts * HIDEO KOJIMA’S METAL GEAR SOLID SNAKE EATER 3D “The Naked Sample” from Konami * Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracles (name not final) from LEVEL-5 * RIDGE RACER (name not final) from Namco Bandai Games * KINGDOM HEARTS franchise game from Square Enix * DEAD OR ALIVE3D (name not final) from Tecmo Koei Games * SAMURAI WARRIORS 3D from Tecmo Koei Games * Battle of Giants: Dinosaur Strike from Ubisoft * Hollywood 61 (name not final) from Ubisoft
A sampling of other Nintendo 3DS games already in planning includes SUPER STREET FIGHTER IV 3D Edition (name not final) from Capcom; Madden NFL and FIFA Soccer games from Electronic Arts; CODENAME: Chocobo Racing 3D and a FINAL FANTASY franchise game and from Square Enix; a NINJA GAIDEN (name not final) game from Tecmo Koei Games; Saint’s Row: Drive By from THQ; Assassin’s Creed Lost Legacy, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon and Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Chaos Theory from Ubisoft; and a Batman game from Warner Bros. Additional games are in development by Atlus, AQ Interactive, Disney Interactive Studios, Harmonix, Hudson Soft, Majesco, Marvelous Entertainment, Rocket, SEGA, Takara Tommy and Take-Two Interactive.
Nintendo also announced a substantial slate of games on the way for its Wii console and Nintendo DS family of systems, with a list of characters and franchises that appeal to all types of gamers.
”If the video game industry had an All-Star team, Nintendo’s games would fill the starting lineup,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “The combination of advanced interface and engaging game play broadens our appeal to all audiences. This is evidenced perfectly at the E3Expo this year by the incredible new experience and controls that Wii MotionPlus brings to The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword .”
Wii:
* The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword: The game marks a turning point for the franchise, as the introduction of full motion controls enabled by the Wii MotionPlus accessory synchronises player movements with Link’s actions while offering the most intuitive play control of any Legend of Zelda game to date. The game is scheduled to launch this November. * Golden Sun: Dark Dawn: A classic role-playing game branches out with a new look, countless adventures and heroic battles. Eight play modes challenge players in guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and vocals, and both co-op and competitive multiplayer options are available. The game is scheduled to launch this holiday season. * Okamiden from Capcom: Players use a brush to draw bridges into existence, traverse canyons and connect winding paths through space. This sequel to Okami follows the story of an adorable wolf pup that fights off a new threat that has drained vibrant colours from the world. The game is scheduled to launch in 2011. * FINAL FANTASY : THE 4 HEROES OF LIGHT from Square Enix: This first original FINAL FANTASY game for the Nintendo DS family of systems uses charming storybook visuals and a fun, intuitive combat system. Players can customise their characters and up to four players can join forces for cooperative play. 08/07/2010 See Samus Aran come to life like never before in METROID: Other M
8 July 2010 – Prepare yourself for a Metroid adventure like no other. Stunning action and a moving personal story come together in an unforgettable way in METROID: Other M, launching across Europe for Wii on 3 September 2010.
One of the first female videogame heroines in history, Samus Aran takes centre stage once more in this unprecedented collaboration, blending the slick, action-packed production of the Team Ninja development team with the game design talents of the original Metroid’s creators.
Playing as Samus, players will seamlessly switch between third-person and first-person gameplay for the first time in a Metroid game. Explore and fight in third-person by holding the Wii Remote sideways, and - at any time you choose - switch immediately to a first-person view through Samus’ eyes by simply pointing the Wii Remote at the screen.
This opens up all sorts of new possibilities for exploration and combat. Look through the eyes of Samus to search a room carefully for hidden objects, access vital information and lock on to enemies for precision attacks. Or remain in third-person view to take on swarms of enemies with Samus’ Beam weapon, aided by an auto-aim feature that makes gameplay in this perspective fast, furious – and utterly gripping!
In another series’ first, Samus is getting more physical in METROID: Other M, with a range of melee attacks up the sleeves of her Power Suit. Jump on enemies to perform the powerful Overblast attack, use the 1 Button with precise timing to Counter-attack and finish off wounded enemies with a Lethal Strike. Other new moves include dodging enemy attacks with a well-timed Sensemove and performing a health-restoring Concentration move by holding the Wii Remote vertically with the A Button pressed. Then there’s the new weapon, the Diffusion Beam, which will scatter Charge Beams after impact and hit additional enemies. Amidst all the new features, however, the development team have not forgotten what makes Metroid games so immersive and memorable: atmosphere, exploration and a truly great story. The game takes place on a single, giant Galactic Federation vessel – but this contains a huge variety of locations, each with different environments, unique flora, fauna and enemies.
The Biosphere, for example, is a gigantic greenhouse containing a jungle complete with waterfall, rainfall and countless tropical – and aggressive – creatures and plants. The Cryosphere, by contrast, is a cold, snowy environment where the temperature is so low that entrances are often blocked by ice. Or picture the Pyrosphere, an area filled with volcanoes and magma. Some areas here have such high temperatures that Samus’ health decreases if not equipped with the heat-resistant Varia Suit.
Exploring these hostile environments, you’ll find yourself drawn into a deeply personal story that finally tells Samus’ own tale, revealing her failings, her flaws and ultimately her motivation for being a Bounty Hunter.
The story begins immediately following the events of Super Metroid, when a baby Metroid gave its life to protect Samus. With voice acting in English language and more than one hour of beautifully rendered cut-scenes in total throughout the game, METROID: Other M is not simply fun to play but also exciting to watch. The seamless switch from cut-scenes to gameplay and the smooth transition between third-person and first-person perspectives make this the most cinematic experience you’ll have had in a Metroid game.
This is a dramatic new direction for a legendary franchise and a bold new blend of cinematics, storytelling and stylish, no-holds-barred action. Charge up your Beam, arm your Bombs and get ready to scan your environment for a copy of METROID: Other M when it launches across Europe for Wii on 3 September 2010.

12/07/2010 Discover Pearl Harbor Trilogy for WiiWare with our developer interview
When Legendo Entertainment set out to create a flight simulation for Wii, there was plenty to take into consideration. From implementing immersive controls to balancing arcade action and historical accuracy, the Swedish developer was aiming high from the outset.
Now the fruits of their labour are ripe and almost ready for the picking in the shape of Pearl Harbor Trilogy – a series of three downloadable WiiWare games that put players in the cockpit of faithfully recreated fighter planes from the Pacific War era.
We spoke with CEO and Executive Producer at Legendo Entertainment, Bjorn Larsson, to get the inside track on the process of taking Pearl Harbor Trilogy from a drawing board dream to a fully realised reality.
When creating the games in the Pearl Harbor Trilogy, did you start out by looking at ways to bring fresh and original ideas to the flight simulation genre? If so, what were some of the specific areas you thought could be improved upon from other flight simulation games?
We’ve noticed that in other flight games, controlling and manoeuvring the plane is often unnecessarily complex. We believe this prevents many players from taking to the skies. So with that in mind, we set out to create a fun and fluid, pick up and play motion-controlled air-combat action game that was emphasising historical accuracy but would in no way be mistaken for a simulator.
Also, one of the main drives behind Pearl Harbor Trilogy was to reinvent the magic from the arcades and classic console games, and we believe that paying homage to the arcade roots that the games industry rests upon is a noble cause for any console game.
Pearl Harbor Trilogy certainly looks spectacular and you’ve clearly worked very hard to bring the game world to life. What are some of the other ways you help transport players to the historical period the games depict?
Visually speaking, we have dressed up the game’s presentation with an aged comic book style to give it a bit of a historical feel but in a fun, arcade-like manner. We have also made sure that the various American and Japanese plane types and the mission locations are historically accurate, and of course that the campaign missions are unlocked in an appropriate order that follows the timeline of the Pacific War.
As the “trilogy” of the game title suggests, there are going to be three separate Pearl Harbor downloads coming to WiiWare. Can you share with us a bit about how those differ, and the benefits of playing all three parts?
Each game in the trilogy focuses on a different time-period of the Pacific War, with the first title, 1941: Red Sun Rising, including the aircraft and missions of the early years. Subsequent parts will include additional plane types and more historical missions from later in the war, and we are of course also planning on including a few surprises in terms of additional play mechanics and manoeuvring features to make sure each part of the trilogy is relevant while also offering something new.
How have you utilised the unique features of Wii and what do the Wii-specific elements you’ve focused on add to the overall gameplay experience in Pearl Harbor Trilogy?
Wii has enabled us to pay special attention to the game’s use of motion controls, which really enhances the flight experience. We believe that motion controls make 3D gaming much more accessible, and this is especially true for flight games. It just feels more natural to move the controller in a 3D space than to try to do the same with a controller with sticks.
Why does WiiWare appeal to you as a platform for the trilogy?
WiiWare has allowed us to create an instantly enjoyable trilogy of air-combat action games and offer each part to customers for an attractive price. It costs us less time and money to make each title which means we can pass savings onto players, while also being able to take feedback into consideration between each instalment. And unlike other console download services, WiiWare does not require that we bloat our titles with unnecessary features or content, which enables us to concentrate on making the game itself.
The first game in the Pearl Harbor Trilogy, Pearl Harbor Trilogy - 1941: Red Sun Rising, will be available to download via WiiWare from 16 July, with the second and third instalments following soon after.
14/07/2010 Metroid, Dragon Quest, Tetris, Face Training and much more coming soon for Nintendo consoles!
14 July 2010 - With summer in full swing, Nintendo looks ahead to a packed line-up of game launches for Wii and the family of Nintendo DS consoles over the next three months.
Fans of the classic Metroid franchise will be delighted as METROID: Other M - words that many have been waiting to hear, arrives in Europe on 3rd September. Fans will see Samus Aran as never before as she returns in an unprecedented collaboration which blends the slick, action-packed production of the Team Ninja development team with the game design talents of the creators of the original Metroid.
The handheld phenomenon that is DRAGON QUEST IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies is also making its long-awaited arrival to European shores, and you only have a matter of weeks to wait. One of the biggest games ever to hit the Nintendo DS family of consoles, it has all the elements of an instant classic: customisation options, a great story, and the ability to share a nearly limitless experience with friends. Developed by Square Enix Co., Ltd and launching imminently on 23 July, European fans will soon get to feel and experience the mechanics that have made this game such a true social phenomenon in Japan.

15th July 2010 – Love film noir? Love mystery novels, but want influence over the plot? Get your detective head on for Last Window: The Secret of Cape West which launches exclusively on the Nintendo DS family of consoles on 17th September 2010. Those familiar with Hotel Dusk: Room 215 on Nintendo DS will remember Kyle Hyde - the dark and mysterious character who now returns in Last Window: The Secret of Cape West for another quest to discover the truth.
Last Window is a thrilling and challenging interactive novel packed with hidden mysteries which players must unravel one piece at a time. Just like a great book, players will not only need to hold the Nintendo DS vertically, they will find the ever-twisting storyline so captivating they’ll not want to put it down.
That, however, is where the similarities end – here you can actually influence how the story develops! Decisions you make throughout the game will alter Kyle’s journey and result in different outcomes in the storyline.
Every time the player completes a chapter of the in-game novel Last Window, this episode is adapted into text form to be read at anytime, meaning you not only get to enjoy the captivating gameplay, but a great novel at the same time! The novel also acts as a hint section, directing players to certain characters should they have missed a clue or conversation.
Set in Los Angeles in 1980, a year after the events in Hotel Dusk: Room 215, the story follows the investigation of Kyle Hyde, a former police officer, as he attempts to solve a mystery involving his father's murder and secretive past. Knowledge of Hotel Dusk: Room 215 is not essential for you to help Kyle crack the mystery behind Cape West, the former hotel which is now his apartment building.
With beautifully sketched, fully rendered 3D environments, plus easy-to-use Touch Screen controls for navigating environments and controlling characters, it is easy to lose yourself in this story. You won’t be prompted, but why not try using the Nintendo DS in-built microphone to solve some of the mysteries? Jazz fans will also be pleased to hear that Kyle shares your passion – enjoy his favourite music on the Juke Box at any time you like.
While this game is packed with clues, it will test the keenest puzzle solver. Think Professor Layton puzzle-solving, immersed within a great and rich film noir-esque story... and make sure you look out for extra clues in your game packaging manual...
So get ready to uncover the mystery of the year as Last Window: The Secret of Cape West launches exclusively on the Nintendo DS family of consoles on 17th September 2010.

26/07/2010 Train, relax and strengthen your facial muscles with Face Training on your Nintendo DSi and Nintendo DSi XL
26 July 2010 – Looking a little stressed out lately? Strengthen and relax six different areas of your face through simple, daily exercises with 'Face Training: Facial exercises to strengthen and relax from Fumiko Inudo', released across Europe exclusively for Nintendo DSi & Nintendo DSi XL on 24 September 2010.
In the same way that you helped train your brain with Dr Kawashima's Brain Training series of games for Nintendo DS, Face Training contains a series of simple exercises to target specific areas of your face. The exercises have all been created in cooperation with Japanese Beautician & Specialist in the Muscles of Facial Expression, Fumiko Inudo.
Target the Ocular Muscle with an eye exercise that can help to ease tension around the eyes. Or try focusing on some different types of facial and neck muscles such as your Zygomaticus Major – cheek area, Orbicularis Oris – mouth area or Trapezius – neck muscle to name a few, which could all help you in your task to facial wellness.
Getting started is quicker and easier than doing your make-up in the morning! Put your Nintendo DSi or Nintendo DSi XL on the included stand and the inner camera will show a mirror-like image of you as you perform the exercises. Your host during the game is Miles, who can be styled individually to your taste. As your virtual trainer, Miles will show the exercises on the left screen accompanied by a vocal explanation. You simply choose from a series of facial exercises and training sessions that focus on six different facial areas – eyes, cheeks, nose, mouth, jaw and neck – to find the ideal training for you.
The camera in your Nintendo DSi detects your movements during the exercises. You can even take a photo and Miles will provide advice on that exercise. You can check your progress daily using the available calendar function. In total, there are more than 15 different guided exercises which could all help to retain a face rich with vitality and facial expression.
Bonus features include unique mirror angles to experiment with, so you can check your face from different viewpoints and perspectives, which you would be unable to with a normal mirror.
'Face Training: Facial exercises to strengthen and relax from Fumiko Inudo' will be in shops from 24 September 2010, only for Nintendo DSi & Nintendo DSi XL.

29/07/2010 Get the most out of Dragon Quest IX with Tag Mode!
Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies is the epic adventure for the Nintendo DS where YOU are the hero. Create and customise your own unique character and go on an enthralling adventure through exotic lands filled with excitement, danger and hilarity in an almighty quest to save your people.
The main quest will take you many hours to complete but there are lots of other opportunities to interact with others when playing Dragon Quest IX, both in the game world and in real life! One of the most exciting ways to interact with other Dragon Quest IX players is to use Tag Mode. A runaway success in Japan, Tag Mode allows your Dragon Quest IX hero to “meet” the heroes of other players, swap character information and receive unique maps that will lead you to untold riches and fierce battles. The hero of the other player will also take residence in your Inn, which will grow larger in size the more people you interact with.
In order to enter Tag Mode with your Nintendo DS, you need to speak to Erinn at the Quester’s Rest and choose the option “Canvass for guests”. Once you’ve activated this mode, you can shut your DS and carry it around with you. Every time you’re in the vicinity of another player who has also entered Tag Mode, the exchange will take place. It’s a great way to pick up new maps and since it happens without you knowing, it’s a brilliant surprise to see you’ve met another fan during the day! Up to three new guests can take up residence in your Inn every day and you can have 30 visitors at any one time.
Extra content for Dragon Quest IX doesn’t stop there though! There are dozens of new quests to download and items to pick up outside of the main game. The way to get to these goodies is by using Dragon Quest IX’s very own shopping channel – DQVC. Fronted by Sellma at the Quester’s Rest, DQVC offers scores of new items for sale every week, with items available to you changing every day. Different players are offered varying items, so if a friend’s DQVC has something on sale that you fancy, you can even enter their game world using local multiplayer mode and snap it up for yourself! To use DQVC, you need to connect your Nintendo DS to the Internet. For more information on Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, visit our Support Section here.
