Peek into the wild world of NEW PLAY CONTROL! Donkey Kong Jungle Beat

Long has it been claimed that the mighty lion may lay hold to the honorary title of “king of the jungle”, but our observations tell a different tale.

Delving beneath the canopy of trees that shield the activities of the jungle from above, we find an altogether more regal beast busying himself with the duties of the day. With a grace that defies his size, and a strength that seems inconceivable for one so mobile, this great ape is a wonder of the natural world whose antics must be seen to be believed.

As we peer from the undergrowth, it is possible to observe the animal (who curiously wears a red tie emblazoned with the letters “DK”) apparently undertaking a personal mission of some kind. At a glance, it is clear he possess a healthy share of both friends and enemies. In our observations we have witnessed him being assisted by creatures of land, sea and air as he confronts other beasts – some that appear from a safe distance to be at least 10 times his size.

As with many of the apes we have observed, the primary ambition of this arboreal animal seems to revolve around the collection of bananas. But while this is not uncommon, the manner in which he amasses his stash of fruit is anything but conventional.

With breathtaking displays of agility, we have seen the beast leaping off of walls, performing back flips and using almost every element of his surroundings as a personal playground of sorts. It appears his chief aim in these exploits is to keep his feet off the ground for as long as possible and string together combinations of moves that allow him to collect even the most obscurely positioned of bananas.

It is clear there remains a great deal to observe as we attempt to get to the bottom of where this creature came from and what exactly he is trying to achieve. For now though, marvel at this footage of him in action and share in our awe at the day-to-day antics of the one we now affectionately know as DK.

Click here to see further footage of DK’s expert exploits and discover more about our observations.

Alternatively, if you're already familiar with the antics of the great ape in NEW PLAY CONTROL! Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, click here to visit our support section and read some insider secrets about the game.

NEW PLAY CONTROL! Donkey Kong Jungle Beat is out now, only on Wii.

Play your cards right as UNO™ comes to WiiWare and Nintendo DSiWare

26 October 2009 – UNO™ is one of the most popular card games of all time and for the first time it is available on the 6th of November to play on WiiWare and Nintendo DSiWare!

This classic card game has worldwide acclaim and is the perfect entertainment for all the family. UNO™ is being brought to WiiWare and Nintendo DSiWare by Gameloft, a leading developer and publisher of downloadable videogames.  Keeping close to the original game style and identity, the rules are still easy enough for everyone to understand.

Play against the computer in Single Player mode or play with up to six friends in Online Multiplayer mode. Playing UNO™ is an immersive experience, as many key Nintendo DSi and Wii features are utilised. Using the Nintendo DSi cameras and Mii characters on Wii, you can fully customise your appearance in the game. Furthermore, you can use the Nintendo DSi microphone to shout "UNO" for real, and Wii Speak to talk to your opponents while playing online. Victory has never been so enjoyable!

To keep things fresh you can also choose between many backgrounds and card designs which become unlocked as you progress through the game.

What’s more, there are different rule variations to play the game your way, including 7-0 that lets players exchange their hands, and Jump-in, where you can even play cards when it’s not your turn. You can also customise penalties to make the challenge even spicier.

“UNO appeals to fans worldwide and we are excited to bring this classic title to Nintendo DSi and Wii,” said Gonzague de Vallois, senior vice president, Gameloft. “The customisation features and microphone support allow UNO fans to experience new and exciting gameplay with a modern twist.”

As the Wii Shop Channel is continually updated with exciting and refreshing games, make sure you keep checking the Nintendo Channel and www.WiiWare.co.uk for all the latest WiiWare news and releases. Downloaded games can be saved to Wii’s internal memory or an SD Card and added to the console’s Wii Menu or SD Card Menu for anytime easy access.

Following the launch of the Nintendo DSi earlier this year, the Nintendo DSiWare pipeline is also regularly being updated. Make sure you keep checking www.DSiWare.co.uk and the Nintendo Channel for all the latest Nintendo DSiWare news and releases.

Four legs better than two for fighting the flab

2 November 2009 - When it comes to getting in shape, your four-legged friend may hold the answer to improving your fitness. A unique European study into the walking regimes of dogs and their owners by Nintendo DS game Walk with me! Do you know your walking routine? and The Kennel Club has revealed that dog owners walk 9.27km a day – nearly twice as far as non-dog owners.

The study of 100 dogs and their owners was carried out using the Walk with me! Do you know your walking routine? Nintendo DS game; lifestyle software which helps you and your family get in tune with your personal walking regime by monitoring your steps taken throughout the day. During the study both animals and humans wore specially designed Activity Meters recording their walking regimes, minute by minute, 24 hours a day.

It showed that whilst the average daily distance walked by non-dog owners is 4.7km[1], Europe’s 50 million dog owners walk on average 9.27km[2] a day burning a combined count of 10.65 billion calories[3]. Respected health advice is that we should all walk close to 10,000 steps (8km) a day as part of a healthy and balanced lifestyle[4].

Result highlights include:

<ul><li>Dog owners walk over 1,680km[5] more than non-dog owners in a year (equivalent to walking from Dublin to Vienna)</li>
<li>The average dog takes over 81,000 steps in a week - around 14,000 more than its owner (or nearly 700,000 steps a year)</li>
<li>The study showed owners take their furry friends on two walks a day, lasting for around 20 minutes</li>
<li>The most active dog in the study was the Papillon which took nearly 200,000 steps in a week</li></ul>

Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Communications Director, said: “The study has shown that dog owners are generally much fitter than those who don’t own dogs. As the credit crunch bites and more people ditch their expensive gym memberships, it can be hard to get the exercise that you need, but it seems that dog owners have a readymade solution – exercising with their dog is fun, affordable and it is easy to get motivated with the eager eyes and wagging tail of your dog egging you on.”

Caroline continues: “This is great news for dogs, who, without this kind of regular exercise, can suffer from serious health problems, as can the human population. The Kennel Club’s Fight the Flab with Fido campaign aims to get dog and owner fit together and there are lots of different sports that they can enjoy from simple walking to agility.”

Laurent Fischer, Managing Director, Marketing and PR, Nintendo of Europe, said: “Not only is this a great way of keeping fit, it is also a fun way to monitor your dogs’ rhythm and activity levels through the day. When you are out and your dog is at home, you can find out what they get up to in the day from having a sleep to when the postman drops off the letters. Walk with me! Do you know your walking routine? is a unique and convenient tool to measure their activity and bring you closer to your dog when you are away.”

In shops tomorrow: “a boy and his blob”

Available in shops from tomorrow, “a boy and his blob” is a brand new version of the classic NES game of the same name. You play a small boy trying to save the land of Blobolonia from the threat of an evil emperor. Along the way he picks up a new friend – “blob”, who can change into a multitude of different objects depending on which flavour of jellybean the boy feeds him. The boy has to overcome a myriad of obstacles and solve numerous tricky puzzles by using the blob’s abilities to progress through the game environment.

We got together with Sean Velasco from WayForward Technologies to chat about the game. We covered blob basics such as the storyline and puzzle-creation, but also looked deeper into the development process, unearthing detail on the challenges WayForward faced and what they plan for the future…

You can read the whole interview at our dedicated “a boy and his blob” gamepage by clicking here.

How many calories can you burn with Wii Sports?

What’s your favourite game in Wii Sports? Whether you love a round of Golf, consider yourself king of the Tennis court or are unbeatable at Bowling, you can now get an estimated assessment of how many calories you burn every time you play.

By checking out our interactive Wii Sports Calorie Meter and entering your height, weight and roughly how long you play your favourite athletic activities in Wii Sports, the Calorie Meter will figure out the approximate calorie loss resulting from your efforts.

The figures on the site are determined using the MET calculation system, which is also used in Wii Fit Plus to help you keep track of the calories you shed whilst working out on the Wii Balance Board.

Click here to try out the Wii Sports Calorie Meter for yourself and learn more about METs.

Link and Zelda join forces in The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks

6 November 2009 - It was among the most outrageous incidents in video game history: in 1986, Princess Zelda was kidnapped from the land of Hyrule, setting off an intrepid rescue adventure for young hero Link. Unfortunately for Zelda, this offence has been repeated more than a dozen times since, leaving her largely out of sight while Link has traversed dark dungeons and confronted monstrous enemies alone in order to save her.

This time, in the new Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi adventure The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, that all changes.

For the first time in the 23 year history of The Legend of Zelda series, Princess Zelda is leaving the villainous clutches of the underworld behind and joining the adventure with Link. In The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, the spirit of Zelda accompanies Link on his quest to save Hyrule. Directly impacting gameplay like never before, Zelda’s spirit can take control of hulking suits of armour known as Phantoms, allowing the player to direct both Link and these new allies as they battle enemies, solve puzzles and uncover secrets. Zelda also rides alongside Link on his customisable train, offering wisdom that will help players find new areas, storylines and items. The team of Link and Zelda present countless new storyline details for fans to enjoy, including a closer look at Princess Zelda herself, one of the most iconic video game characters of all time.

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks launches in Europe on December 11. For more information, visit [/link=http://www.nintendo.co.uk/NOE/en_GB/games/nds/the_legend_of_zelda_spirit_tracks_13569.html]www.spirittracks.co.uk.[/link]

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks Spirit Pipes

9th November 2009
- Explore vast landscapes, battle sworn enemies, solve mind-bending puzzles and now, for the first time, use the power of the Spirit Pipes to alter your world, when The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks launches across Europe on the 11th of December.

Make sure you hit the right note by blowing into the Nintendo DS microphone. Use the stylus and Touch Screen to set the right pitch and play the correct melodies on your Spirit Pipes.

This woodwind instrument plays an essential role in The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks. By playing the soothing and exciting melodies on your Spirit Pipes throughout the game you will conjure various different effects.

Before being able to visit a temple, you have to search for one of the land’s guardians, called the Lokomos, who teach you a song that restores the tracks to the temple. Listen to the handy metronome to keep to the fun and challenging rhythm. It doesn’t stop there though, as each land has its own song with which to restore the Spirit Tracks!

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks launches in Europe on December 11. For more information, visit www.spirittracks.co.uk

Behind the scenes with Shaun White Snowboarding: World Stage

Shaun White Snowboarding: World Stage invites players to get back on the Wii Balance Board and tear down the slopes as they attempt to rise up the world rankings. This time around, those who equip their Wii Remote with Wii MotionPlus can even create their very own tricks to impress the crowd!

We caught up with the game’s lead designer, Stéphane Blais, to find out how the follow up to Shaun White Snowboarding: Road Trip injects a more competitive edge into proceedings.

It’s only been around a year since the last Shaun White game was released for Wii. What were some of the key motivators in heading back to the slopes so soon?

In Road Trip, the storyline was more about snowboarding in the “back country”, and what we decided to do with World Stage was to create a sequel to the storyline of Road Trip and place players on the world stage. So, the crew now wants to go into competition, compete against other crews and go pro. So that was one of the main motivations for us. And in the game it’s the main motivation of the player now as well – to go and compete against other snow boarders.

The first game was a big success, both in terms of sales and how it was received critically. Did you still feel there was room for improvement though?

Absolutely. The thing is, we kept the good things from the first game and brought them to World Stage. So we kept the controls really accessible. I think that’s one of the key reasons Road Trip was successful. In World Stage, one of the improvements that we wanted to have was to create more content; more action on the slopes themselves. So since we didn’t touch the controls and kept them as they were, it allowed us to work more on gameplay elements. Now things are much more dynamic and much more action oriented.

Can you tell us a bit more about the competitive element you mentioned before forms the backbone of Shaun White: World Stage?

You start with your crew at the bottom of the ladder, so you are ranked 100, and your goal is to reach the top and become number one. So you start as a beginner and can visit different countries – it’s not linear, it’s more of an open structure. As you visit different countries you can win awards and improve your place in the rankings. And as you progress you can go from beginner to intermediate to advanced and eventually pro, then compete in the World Stage event when you compete against other people in a big one week event. And it’ll be hard, but you’ll get it! So that’s the main aspect, it’s really competitive all the time. You go up against other crews, you play with your friends and you progress, winning rewards as you go.

So if your entire crew starts out ranked at 100, is it safe to assume you’ll be using different riders for different events as you compete?

Exactly. I think that one of the nice things is that we kept the same characters that appeared in the first game, so you start the game with the same eight characters that you had at the end of Road Trip, and every one of them have their own little specialties. So, for example, if you enter a race you’ll select Gordon because he’s very fast, if you go for a trick event you’ll select Jasmine because she’s really good at jumping. And throughout the game some other new characters will join your crew. Also you have Shaun White. Shaun is already a pro, and you will meet him earlier than in the previous game – you get to participate in special one-off events where you take control of Shaun as he’s participating in some competitions. So it’s fun for the player because they have the chance to play as Shaun White earlier in the game, and if you manage to get the number one spot in the world, Shaun will be very impressed and join your crew and become a permanent selectable character.

Are some of the ideas that have gone into World Stage things that you were thinking about for the first game but have only been able to realise now?

Yeah, I think more action on the slopes was one of these things. I think with Road Trip we really nailed the controls, and we worked a lot on those to make sure they were satisfying and accessible for everybody. Since we had that in place, we were able to focus on fun new additions to the gameplay, so we have things like corner kickers, quarter-pipes and half-pipes right there in the middle of regular slopes as well as in events. Since we didn’t start again and play around with the controls, we’ve been able to play with these new ideas and add them in.

Also, one thing that really bugged us from the first game was the co-op mode. To play together you had to create a new co-op career and start again, but now it’s totally seamless. You can start your own career and a friend can jump in or out at any moment as you’re playing through it. We think that’s a very important addition.

This time we also have online leader boards. So for each of the 25 slopes in the game you can post your best score and your best time online via those leader boards and compare those with people around the world to see if you’re really good - or not!

The control scheme for the first Shaun White game was widely praised, and you’ve already spoken about not having to go back and concentrate on the control scheme very much. But will players experience any subtle changes in how the game controls?

We always felt it was really accessible, so there are just minor tweaks. For example, we’ve made sure it’s even easier to go on rails and do tricks. We also have more events that include more AI on the slopes – we have up to eight people at the same time boarding with you during races, so we also had to tweak the collision system a little bit to make sure your character isn’t constantly falling over and making things frustrating.

The game uses Wii MotionPlus to let players create tricks. Were you actively thinking of ways to implement Wii MotionPlus in the game from early on in the development process, and was it just a case of finding the right way to do it?

We wanted to do more than just simply support Wii MotionPlus, but it was very important for us to keep the controls as they where. The other thing that was important was to not alienate players who don’t have Wii MotionPlus by giving an extra edge to those who do. Of course, we played a little with ideas like mini-games and suchlike, but hey, it wasn’t snowboarding! So when we finally thought of the trick creation mode, that was it - the right thing to do. Give back the chance to be creative to the player.

Can you explain how the trick creation system works and what it adds to the overall Shaun White experience?

It’s a three-step, very simple process that allows the user to replace an existing trick with a trick of their own design.

The first step is to input the rotation and movement of the rider in the air. By moving the Wii Remote around in any way with Wii MotionPlus attached, that movement will be reproduced one-to-one on the screen by the rider on the board. It’s as if the Wii Remote becomes the rider’s board. There's only one limitation to the player’s creativity - you have to land correctly at the end of the sequence.

The second step is putting the grabs on the trick. Again, this is a very easy process where, as your rotation is being played back on screen, you press and hold the A Button, B Button or both to add hand grabs.

Then the last step, and sometimes the hardest! - Name your trick, choose an icon to represent it and you’re ready to go try your own trick on the slope.

We see some franchises, especially sports titles, which have new additions to the series on an annual basis. Is that something you’d like to see happening with the Shaun White series on Wii?

At the moment, I’m looking forward to players getting their hands on World Stage and hopefully having a really great time with it. The thing is, I think we have a good and funny storyline. So, looking forward, we don’t know where the crew will lead us. Now they’re pro, they’ve had success and maybe they go back to the back country – I don’t know!

Shaun White Snowboarding: World Stage is out this Friday, only for Wii.

BBC and Nintendo launch new ‘BBC iPlayer’ as a Wii Channel

Nov 13, 2009
- The BBC and Nintendo UK today unveil a new version of the popular BBC iPlayer on Nintendo’s Wii. First made available through the console’s internet channel in April 08, BBC iPlayer will now be available as a dedicated ‘Wii Channel’ to provide Wii users with a new, richer experience of the BBC’s TV and Radio on demand catch up service. The new Wii Channel is expected to be available from 00:01 on Wednesday 18 November.

Since BBC iPlayer first launched on the Nintendo Wii, there have been 900,000 requests for TV and Radio programmes, and this new version of BBC iPlayer for Wii has been designed to deliver a better and higher quality experience, with a new full screen user interface allowing the whole family to catch up on TV and radio together in the lounge.

Erik Huggers Director BBC Future Media & Technology said: “We’re pleased that we’ve been able to work with Nintendo to evolve BBC iPlayer on Wii, providing a faster, high quality and improved viewing experience. It’s important that we offer audiences more ways to access the huge range of BBC content available, and this improved version of BBC iPlayer underlines our commitment to reaching new audiences by making BBC iPlayer available on as many platforms as possible.”

David Yarnton, General Manager, Nintendo UK, added: “Our partnership with the BBC is another way in which Nintendo is looking to broaden the market for its products by offering compelling and relevant content to families. BBC iPlayer offers Wii owners another reason to turn their console on everyday and adds to the already established non gaming content on Wii that includes Wii Channels for news, weather forecasts and an internet browser.”

To use the new BBC iPlayer on Nintendo’s Wii, Wii users should download the BBC iPlayer Wii Channel from the menu screen of Wii Shop Channel. Once downloaded, users simply click on the BBC iPlayer icon to launch the new full screen service, then select and play their favourite BBC TV or radio programme that they want to watch.
