ACC used to have an official search function that allowed you to search for threads on the boards. But it was slow, took weeks to index new threads, and slowed down the site terribly. Because of these problems Jader just decided to remove it. Since then many have asked for an official replacement, and despite this obvious need for a working search engine nothing was done. Until now.
For the past couple weeks I've been working to make my own ACC Search Engine to replace the old official one. It is now complete and ready for your use. This is not some half baked Google Custom search, it is an independently created and managed search engine made by me specifically for use with ACC.
NEW: Star System - Click the star next to a thread to increase it's star count and ranking in search results. StarThis Link - You can now link people directly to your thread in the search engine using this link. It works for any thread that's been indexed automatically. Just post it on a thread. Stats Page - You can view various stats and statistics about the ACC Search Engine in addition to a list of the top 10 most starred threads on the new stats page.
Here are some of the advantages of this new one over the old one: 1) Faster. This search engine will add all new threads and update all existing threads in the index every 24 hours. That means people who make new threads won't have to wait more than 24 hours for their thread to get listed in search results. It's fully automatic, and doesn't require any action by me or anyone else for new threads to be added.
2) No Lag. Because the actual searching is done on my server instead of ACC's, use of the this search engine will in no way impact ACC's speed or functions. The only time the search engine ever even needs to access ACC at all is when it indexes. It indexes in 5 minute bursts at 4 times every day. Even when it is indexing it causes no more lag than that of 2 or 3 extra users using the site.
3) More accurate. Remember how the old search engine never really found what you were looking for? The new ACC Search Engine works much better than that, and is very accurate at handling your search queries. You can even use * as a wildcard in your query.
4) Built in thread ratings system. You can easily award 'stars' to threads and help them achieve a higher listing in the search results, and possibly even appear in the top ten. Each person can award 5 stars a day.
So, without further aimless ramblings, I give you the ACC Search Engine:
Yes. Searching post contents would make it ALOT slower, because in order to do that it'd have to actually visit each thread, rather than what it does now which is just record the links to the threads and the titles from the board index.
BUG: It doesn't let you search for parts of words. For example. If you type "Pika", you only see threads with "Pika" in the title and no threads with "Pikachu".
And that's not a bug. Can you imagine how annoying searching for "the" and getting "there" and "weather" would be?
To search for part of a word use the *.
So if you want words that only start with pika use "pika*", it it should end in pika use "*pika" and if you want pika do be in any part of the word use "*pika*".
There should be a link to this at the top of the home-page.
Signature-------------- Goodness me no need for glorification.
___
All I need is a good reputation.
Yeah I'm hoping something like that will eventually happen. Or even better yet a full search box next to the username look up that uses the new ACC Search Engine.
