Welcome, readers, to The Fence of Terran, a complete opposite to my balanced story, Westview! Read the blurb below before you begin reading!

Years after Westview, Zach, and his sister Caroline, who decided to tag along for the wild ride of Zach's life, pull up to the entrance of a curious city named Baverwood. Oddly enough, this city is also inhabited with animal residents left and right, with only a few other human residents scattered about the streets. Soon after moving in, like all new residents to Baverwood, they soon learn about the region outside the city limits, an ever-spanning area of tall-waving grass and a lone picket fence running directly through it. Strangely, no animal in the whole city ever dare cross the fence. Zach or Caroline can't even get any information about it, because city residents are to frightened to talk about it. One day, Zach hears word around town that Caroline, out of curiosity decided to cross the fence and see what was on the other side. Suddenly, Zach was placed in a life or death situation. It was now his duty to bring Caroline back, or die trying. He slips out of the city at night and walks up to the fence amongst the waving grass, the wind seemed to be pulling him toward the other side.

Chapter One
The tunnel of trees and the abyss of sleep

The last thing I remember before my life was to change forever was ascending a steep hill in a bright yellow cab through a tunnel of thick trees. It was so dark within the enclosed space that you wouldn’t have been able to tell the difference between a black car and our neon taxi.
The road climbed steeper and steeper, and my mind kept slipping deeper and deeper into the endless abyss of sleep. As I drifted off to the low rumble of the taxi’s engine under the shiny hood, I dreamt of my coming life in the city of Baverwood. Little did I know that Baverwood was not my actual destination, but was a strange world, right under this Earth’s nose the whole time. This is the story of Terran.
It seemed like hours before the taxi driver woke us up.
“Fare please.” The driver mumbled. I shifted in my sleep, stirred by the sound from the outside world.
“I said fare please.” Said the driver in a louder tone. My eyes cracked open and I was slapped back into reality. I drowsily pulled my wallet out of my pocket and handed the driver a twenty-dollar bill.
“Will this cover it?” I questioned. The driver pointed to the meter. Fifty dollars? That was insanity!
“I guess we’ll have to skip the fancy dinner tonight, Caroline.” I sighed. My sister, Caroline, mumbled, still not fully awake. I pulled out three more tens and aggravatingly handed them over to the driver.
“Thanks much, Mr. Zach. Would you like help with your suitcases?” He cheerfully asked.
“Will you charge?” I asked sarcastically.
“’Course not!” He stated, still within his peppy little bubble.
“I think we can manage.” I coldly stated as I hopped out of the bright automobile.
This was the first time in what seemed like ages I had seen the outside. We stood at the end of a long, wooden bridge across a wide river, and on the other side, a large, wrought iron gate stating “Baverwood” in large, golden letters. Buildings jutted out from behind the wall, silhouettes of slanting roofs and sharp building corners in front of the setting sun.
The trunk popped open and I slipped around back the taxi to retrieve the suitcases. Caroline lazily stepped out of the automobile to grab her pink suitcase and leather bag. I picked up my clothes sack and my other two suitcases filled with my belongings.
We began walking across the bridge. As were halfway across I noticed the fast landscapes of tall, swaying grass on either side of the town. To the left, a small wooden fence spanned across the hills in the distance.
Caroline was panning the horizon, trying to find what was so curious that I was peering at.
“It’s that fence. What’s it doing out there?” I questioned, not really expecting an answer.
But knowing Caroline, I got one to the best of her ability: “I dunno.”
We approached the gate and looked up. The wall seemed to be six or seven feet tall, and the gate curving in elaborate designs across the opening. I lurched up to the call box and pressed “Call”. My new life was about to begin.

Chapter 2
Odd residents

Suddenly, the keypad on the callbox lit up and a squeaky voice picked up.
“Hello and welcome to Baverwood. My name’s Mitzi and I’m here to assist you, can I help in any way?”
I cleared my throat, “My name’s Zach and my sister, Caroline, (who waved to a camera perched atop the wall) are here to move in. We made a reservation with the realtor a week ago.”
Mitzi spoke up again, “Alrighty. Let me check the computers.” A very faint sound came tapping from the computer keyboard in the background.
“Ah, yes, Zach and Caroline, you’re scheduled to meet with Mr. Tom Nook about setting up an apartment, correct?”
“That is correct.” I said, trying to sound as professional as possible.
“Alright, please punch in the code 3884209 on the keypad and step back to let the gate open. You can find Tom Nook’s shop on Varua Lane.”
The LED lights on the keypad shut off, indicating the connection had been ended, before I even had the chance to thank her.
I punched in the 7-digit code and stepped a few feet back as the gate buzzed and began to swing open.
“Caroline, look out!” I shouted as the gate swung outward. She had been staring off into the sky, looking for familiar figures in the clouds.
She jumped out of the way just in time as the large, metal gate swung open. Inside was a long passage with three foot high walls lining either side of the brick walk and a smaller gate at the end. We walked along the echoing path, clutching our bags, nervous as to what might happen next. We reached the gate and pushed it open. Then, stopped dead in our tracks.
I heard mom saying something about the town having strange inhabitants, but I wasn’t thinking anything like this. Around us on the brick streets between the large stucco and brick building lining either side of the narrow drives, were walking, talking animals. They were everywhere! In the stores, on the streets, on the signs and advertisements, and even working the gates!
“This is amazing! Look at all of them!” Caroline gasped. Her 10-year-old mind was taking over. Cute animals, stuffed bears, and a love for friendly teachers had overtaken her mind.
Me being a mature 15-year-old still couldn’t even imagine what we were seeing.
I swiftly took Caroline’s arm and we began walking up Main Street. I wasn’t sure about this, living in a city filled with animals.
But I soon felt more comfortable once I realized there were other humans here too. As we entered Tom Nook’s shop, Nookington’s, as directed, a woman, about 20, greeted us with a warm smile at the counter.
“What can I do for you?” She asked politely.
I stepped in front, “We’d like to speak to Tom Nook about our moving in, please.”
“Of course!” She exclaimed, “One moment.”
She picked up a small handset by the desk and dialed a three-digit number.
She began talking her peppy voice, “Hi, Mr. Nook, we have a young brother and sister here waiting to move in, can I assist in any way?” She paused, “Alright.” Another pause. “Can do.” Yet another pause, Tom Nook must have been quite the talker. Soon she finally hung up.
“Tom will be down momentarily with a pair of house keys, you’ll be staying in the LeBendaz Towers, room 131 on the top floor.
Suddenly a stout raccoon came scurrying down the wide stairway with an envelope in his little black paws. She handed it to the woman without a word and walked back up the staircase again. She handed me the envelope and a map to our new abode.
“You’ll be staying here, she pointed to the little red dot at the end of a trail marked with purple highlighter. Just follow the marked path and you’ll reach your new home! Tom Nook has left a note on the door for you explaining the rest.
“Thanks!” I exclaimed and we pushed the glass door open to venture to our new home.

Chapter 3
Quetzel St. and the shadow on the horizon

We stepped out into the soft, warm breeze with our bags on our arms and in our hands. I pulled out the map and studied which direction we were supposed to go. The sun was setting and the clear night indicated quite a chill if we weren’t indoors by sundown.
Unfortunately, the walk was quite long to LeBendaz Tower, but we would enjoy seeing the sights of Baverwood before we settled into our home.
Starting left down Delilah Avenue, we immediately noticed the town wall wasn’t for protection at all, but for looks. The large brick wall ran all along the North side of town facing the river and bridge and about a hundred feet on the West and East sides of town before abruptly ending.
The labyrinth of narrow roads snaked in between tall buildings, reminding me of my visit to Venice when I was younger, except the streets were brick and not a shining-reflective river with gondolas floating here and there.
I was almost submerged into the memory when Caroline shook me back into reality.
“Look at that!” she pointed out. I followed her finger and gaze up to a glowing stucco building about five or six blocks down, nearly soaring above the other buildings, was a tower with illuminated yellow letters around the top stating LeBendaz Tower. I gasped, the building was gorgeous.
I payed special attention to the top row of circular windows, it looked quite nice, but I was worrying about the price we’d have to pay for such luxuries.
I pulled some papers out of the envelope she had given me with the map to check pricing. The room that had been reserved for me was 10,000 Bells a month, however there were more apartments for larger or lesser income depending on how my life ended up turning out.
We turned the corner at Brewster’s, a supposedly popular corner cafe, with warm light streaming in through the blinds of the reflective windows, and several other shops and businesses that were closing up for the night.
The narrow brick road echoed with the voice of the breeze bouncing off the tall buildings and low courtyards of the cozy little town. We reached the corner of the block and took another left onto Aurora Drive, a steep, partially winding road that led up to a higher elevated portion of the city. As we reached the top, things automatically became quieter. The street lamps seemed dimmer, spilling shallow pools of light onto the brick surface, along an empty park filled with a lake and trees. We took a final right turn onto Quetzel St. and came to the grand entrance to the LeBendaz.
Towering pillars held up a gleaming metal roof above the grand glass entry door of the tall, circular building. Off to the left was the end of the road and a small picnic area overlooking the strange grassy field we had seen on our way in. As we ascended the steps and opened the door, instantly being bathed with warm air, I could have sworn I saw some sort of black shadow on the horizon of the grassy field past the fence in my peripheral vision.
Hm, I thought. Perhaps it was nothing.

Thanks everyone for your help with the thread. I'm writing this on Word, so I can't do much about the format of the story. But you're correct. Look out for a chapter coming soon titled Change.

Chapter 4
Change

Inside the lobby was a large wooden desk atop a fancy parquet floor, and a dim green wall with triangular lamps every few feet. Along the edges of the South wall were detailed brown leather sofas and chairs surrounding a large, crackling fireplace, sending shadows dancing across the large vaulted ceiling. Expensive burgundy drapes hung over the stylishly designed windows. On either side of the desk were elaborate elevators with old-school current level gauges on the tops.
Caroline wandered around admiring the detail, as I kept a safe distance.
As we finished admiring the architecture and artwork, I approached the counter and handed my key to a snobby cat named Olivia. She inspected the key and threw it back across the counter.
“You’re fine…9th floor…” she slurred out and turned back to her romance novel she was hiding under the counter.
Hm, that’s funny, I thought. It looked like there were ten floors in this building from a distance. We climbed into the elevator and watched the steel door close. I punched the ‘9’ button on the keypad and the car began to rise.
Then everything changed.
The modern lights within the elevator began to flicker and the faint music went to white-noise static, then the elevator stopped. Emergency floor lights flickered on and the HELP button illuminated red on the keypad. I pressed the button but nothing happened.
I turned to see Caroline’s scared face in the eerie blue light. She didn’t say a word.
“It’ll be okay, Carry, I’m sure they just had a little power glitch, that’s all.”
I was wrong.
We waited.
And waited.
And waited.
But nothing happened. Over the past hour or two I had been fighting with myself to take action, and now was the time. I could feel it coursing through my veins. I handed my suitcase handle to Caroline and stood back up from my slouched position against the wall and glanced up at the escape hatch on the top of the elevator.
“Here I go.” I stated with confidence.
Caroline’s eyes became huge, “Zach, you can’t!”
“I have to, don’t be scared.” I whispered as I reached into one of our bags in the corner of the elevator.
“Take this,” I said, turning the walkie-talkie on to channel 4, “You’ll be able to communicate with me while I’m gone.”
She took the handset in her shaky hands as I stepped onto the railing and pushed open the hatch.
“Bye.” My terrified sister whispered as I climbed out into the shaft.
“You don’t have to be so scared, Caroline, I’ll be back, with help. I promise.”
The first thing that happened as I quietly shut the hatch door was a beep from the walkie-talkie and a familiar voice.
“Does this thing work?” she asked
I unclipped the receiver from my belt, “Yes, yes, it works, not just calm down.”
“Okay.”
I looked up the shaft, there was almost no light at all except for slits of emergency strip lighting coming through the cracks of the elevators from the hallways. There were five slits of light, meaning we had ascended four floors before the power failure. I had to act fast, because if the power automatically came back on, I was toast.
I pulled the handset out of my belt clip again, “Carry, this is crucial information, do you hear me?”
“Hi Zach, yes I hear you.” Caroline’s familiar warm voice stated from the little speaker on the device.
“Listen to me now. If the power happens to come back on before I tell you I’m safely in the hallway, jump over and hit the “STOP” button on the elevator keypad, do you hear me?”
“Yeah, yeah, I hear ya.” She seemed to giggle.
“This is important,” I paused, “because if you don’t do this, the elevator will crush me up here.” Suddenly the other side went silent and a lot more serious.
“You can count on me.” Was all she said. And I slipped the walkie-talkie back onto my belt, and grabbed onto the railing. Suddenly the lights flickered. My heart stopped for a split second. I didn’t move.
Then a sound came from the walkie-talkie, “Go, Zach, go! The power is coming back on and I can’t get the hatch back open!”
Suddenly I sprang into motion, scaling the bars and wires along the wall to reach the first hallway elevator door I could find. Suddenly the power began again and this time, the elevator lurched upward a few inches before the power shut off again, by then I was about to go into a nervous breakdown, I was so terrified.
I reached the first door, but there was a problem. It was on the opposite side of the shaft. A small ledge about 6 inches wide was jutting off of the elevator landing. There was only one shot, or I would fall back down to the elevator and most likely break a few bones. This was it.
I lunged across the gap and landed onto the ledge with my fingers on either side of the elevator door. At first my foot slipped, but I soon caught balance. I reached for the crack in the door and pulled it open. The elevator doors smoothly slid open revealing dark hallway with eerie strip lighting on either side of the hallway.
Then, as soon as the electricity shut off, it came back on, and stayed on this time. The lamps lit back up as the strip lighting dimmed and the low hum of the elevator came closer to reaching the door. It slid open and my mouth dropped in shock. Caroline was gone.
