You can get rid of your dirt paths and regain some grass if you dig a hole and cover it up again.  Start where the grass is the least damage and work your way in.  It won't completely fix it as you can't get the holes to overlap, but you can greatly improve the look.

Also works if you plant a flower and then pull it up again and plant it in another spot.

Takes a lot of work, but if you hate the paths enough, you CAN make it look better.

And no, I'm not posting any 'proof'.  Just try it yourself.  It worked for me.

how long does the grass take to grow back without doing anything to it? & can you still just walk where you want the grass to grow back, aka not run around like a crazy person.

You can definitely wear a path into the ground, yes.  I play for maybe an hour a day and I have some slight paths where I fish and from the water all the way up to the top of the town, by Nooks.

I did try the dig and fix last night and it does work, to some degree.  It won't completely fix it.  I'll have to experiment more tonight with maybe planing a tree.  I wonder if that would fix more than the dug hole area.

I haven't any idea how long it takes to grow the grass back by just waiting.  By the sounds of other posts, it takes ages!

Weird.  It worked for me.  Like I said, not 100%, but it did work to some degree if I worked from the least damaged spot, in.

My town has practically no grass at all so I tried what you suggested and it didn't work. So I planted a bunch of flowers, picked them up and still nothing happened.

Ah, oh well.

I actually tried this a few days ago just for the heck of it and didn't notice anything at all. I'll try it again later to see if I notice something.

Yeah, doesn't work.

I think it might just make you think it looks different when you cover it back up. When you think about it, something like that wouldn't change like that in the game within a few steps of digging a hole and filling it back up. You can see as you start to fill it back up the original image that your worn down grass is appears in the dirt being put back in the hole.

You can make the grass grow back faster by planting flowers along the edges and taking a slightly different route for a few days.

Casey, it worked for me.

It doesn't fix it 100%, and I didn't test it on a 'desert', as my town is not THAT bad, but it DID definitely work to some degree.

Next I'm going to plant a tree in a character made dirt path and see what chopping down a full grown tree from the damaged area would do.

Problem is that my town isn't nearly as bad as some of you describe in your towns.  You must run around like crazies!

I'm curious about whether people with completely bare ground are having no results, compared to others, who don't have as much damage having some results.

This may work for people who have just slight wear, but for those who have only dirt left, it does nothing.

I have already tried this a week ago and saw very little benefit.

I should also mention that Time Traveling does NOT FIX this either.

Flowers and trees work simply because they present obstacles for your NPCs, visitors and yourself and redirect you from walking in those squares.  Of course, running through a flower bed is going to destroy all those flowers pretty quickly.

As was stated in several of threads on this subject... Nintendo's idea to add this feature was severely misguided and poorly thought through.

Players who have four family members playing all in the same town are being left with a huge DIRT LOT with little to NO GRASS!

Unless Nintendo is able to adjust this poorly programmed feature through DLC with a more realistic wear rate for the grass, then eventually, ALL of us are going to be playing on dirt.

The re-grow rate is a fraction of the wear rate.

So let's say I decided to experiment. I create a new town. The clock is set to Jan 1 2000. Through gameplay, I eradicate ALL flowers, trees, and grass. The town is effectively a wasteland. I time travel to December 30, 2035. What do you think the town would be like (besides weeds)

Good question!

I don't know if the game anticipates NPC movements without the human player involved.

If it does, then the town would be all dirt because of months of NPC travel.  If not, then no change.

Ooops!  Sorry...I missed the part about getting rid of all the grass.

In that case... YES!  It would still be barren because TTing forward DOES NOT FIX THIS!

P.S.  Nintendo calls this IDIOTIC feature "Animal Tracks".  Unfortunately, after a couple of months, the tracks are replaced by barren dirt.

Bravo Nintendo!  You just won your 20 thousandth BONEHEAD award!
