So who is Wisp you ask? Wisp is a ghost in Animal Crossing that will appear on random mornings at 12:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m.. Many people get confused when they say Wisp comes at night, he does not, he comes in the morning, 12:00 a.m. not 12:00 p.m., actually you can think of it as night but it's still morning. Though many people get confused over what time he comes but just remember, 12:00 a.m. Wisp is however not in Animal Crossing Wild World for the Nintendo DS, they removed them from the DS game and instead when you have many weeds a rafflesia will grow, instead of having a secret character to pick all the weeds for you, they took him out and made you pick all the weeds by hand, it's unclear if Wisp really comes due to having too many weeds but I would say yes.. Now on to the real guide!

Appearance Times
Wisp will not appear every morning, nor will he appear on a certain day of the year. He appears randomly through the week at 12:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. not p.m. When people say he appears at night at 12:00 that is incorrect as, night is in the p.m. hours not the a.m. hours, actually it can be night if you want to call it night. Wisp appears within the first four a.m. hours not the p.m. hours. The correct time he appears is 12:00 a.m. - 4:00 a.m. on random mornings.

How to find Wisp
If your up so late that the clock strikes 12:00 a.m. the next day then that's your chance to look for Wisp. Wisp appears in random acres, search every acre in the forest through rows from acres A-1 to F-5 until you see grey text appear on the screen under the name, ?????. It would say certain messages leading you to Wisp such as, Hello? Could you come this way please?, No no this way., Sorry if I'm bothering you., Your almost there. Let Wisp's voice guide you the way to him, this might take awhile but have patience.

The Five Spirits
When you find Wisp he will talk to you. He will explain to you that he has accidentally lost five spirits and that if he doesn't return all of them to his master with them by 4:00 a.m. then he'll be in big trouble. Who is the master you ask? Nobody knows as it has never been explained and only Nintendo knows about it. Wisp will then ask you to catch all five spirits with your bug-catching net and return all of them to him before 4:00 a.m. This task is the hardest and most time consuming besides trying to find Wisp.

Collecting the Spirits
As I said in the last sentence this is the most difficult part.
Some people may be wondering what the spirits look like and do they move, well here are the answers. The spirits are light blue orb-like objects that glow and have and are said to feel very ectoplasmic.
The spirits move around like butterflies, hovering above the ground but slower and don't go fast or fly away when you approach them, even if you run.

This is were the hard part comes in. The spirits you are asked to catch are in random acres and moving all the time. You have to look through every acre in the town and this can be tiring and boring after a while. Here is what I do when searching for the spirits, I go through every row of acres right to left starting with acre A-1, left to right. If you find some spirits, good job! If you didn't find them all then go back through the acres backwards and repeat until you find them. When you find a spirit you must have your net equipped and swing it at them to catch them. Your character will then say the first time this message.

Finishing
If you have successfully captured all five of the spirits that Wisp requested return to him for a prize. When you return to Wisp he will thank you and reward you with one of three options. The options are:

1. Pick all of your weeds, Wisp is also a good way to get rid of weeds if your town is overrun with them

2. Give you an item that is not in your catalog, basically an item you have never picked up before. The item will not be a rare item so don't get your hopes up.

3. Paint your roof any color you want.

Myths
- "You have to catch Wisp with your net and he will bribe you to let him go."
False. You cannot catch Wisp even if you try. You must catch five different spirits before 4:00 a.m. and then he will give you the three options.
- "Wisp comes at night."
Also false as he comes at 12:00 a.m. not p.m.. This isn't actually a myth, more like an error when people think of twelve 'o clock they often think as the morning as night when it's not.

One question, do you have a better chance of getting wisp if you town's full of weeds? (If so, I'd better get out my GC!)

It's unclear but most guides and cheat websites say yes plus I found Wisp today on my town that's full of weeds so I'd say yes.

what do you mean grey text will appear under the name ??????
where is that?

Basically a speech box will appear automatically when your close to Wisp and it won't tell you who's speaking so it will say ?????, when that happens the words will be gray instead of black, that's Wisp talking to you telling you were to go.

What Does The Word 'Orb' And 'Ectoplasmic' Mean ?

well an orb is like a circular magical thing and i have never heard of the 2nd thing you said

Actually, I have no idea what ectoplasmic means. An orb is something circular like a sphere, it's hard to explain it's a sphere that can be normal, or transparent, certain colors, etc.

The word orb is most commonly used when referring to something that has magical or special properties. Like AnimalForestFan said, it's a sphere. Essentially, they're synonyms.

As for ectoplasmic, it's a word that refers to ghosts. Wikipedia's article defines it as spiritual energy that manifests itself in physical form. So, for the short and sweet explanation, it's what ghosts are made out of.
