I think what he's trying to say is that the UT system is un-needed, but I'm not Richard, so I dunno.

"Does that make it any less of a community?[/bq]
"[/i]- aNDya"

Yes, yes it does. We're just an assortment of random people discussing random things in an unintelligent manner, which is not how ACC used to be and is not how many of the "PT-dwellers" want the site to be like.

The definition of "community" intended in the creation of the site is as follows:
[bq]A feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals."
This is what it has been made into:
"The region occupied by a group of interacting organisms."
Let's rewind toward the first definition before we have to rename ACC to ACS (Animal Crossing Site).

I think maybe we have been on the Off-Topic Board a little too much.  Maybe because it's basically holding up the site now that AC is getting kinda old.
That's why I like the GG Off Topic Board.  The discussions are much more in-depth and interesting than "WHO'S MYE TWINZ??" on the regular Off-Topic.  I just wish it was more active.

I beg to differ, Rodents210. I have met great people and friends on this site and have known some of them for years. I talk about meaningful things with them and consider them my friends, not just some random person I met on the internet.

"A feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals."
That describes my relationship with my friends here, and it was fostered by the atmosphere of ACC.

I do have to agree with some of the points you've made, but I wouldn't do so much as "hate" the Site Staff.  They are there to help the community out.  To be quite frank, things would fall apart with everything being self-modded; worse than you say they are now.  If you have no rules, things will just get madly insane.  That's like a land without laws: Somebody would probably be killed everytime you turned around, somebody would be stealing something, there's be fire, and just a whole angry mob.  Rules are there for a reason...though, there's a line between reasonable and just being strict.
I do like the report system; however, everything seems really automated, as most the world is today...heh.  If you actually got the chance to make the community seem like an "everybody-knows-everybody" community again [as it used to be], then this whole issue could be fixed regardless of the rules and reporting system.
I do see the need to have the Site Staff, especially the Mods, but in no way should they act superior over any member.  By that I mean they shouldn't be all dictator-like when somebody breaks a rule or be stuck-up about they position they have.  In ways, it is a responsibility and a privledge.
To add, this is the internet and a family-friendly site, so if a rule is broken to an extent where someone could be really offended or mess with a younger member's mind, then I think there is a place for discipline.  But like said, this is the internet and there's not much you can do but give a warning a couple times, then a ban, and if the rule is broken again, a perma-ban.  It's kind of like having police.  They are there to inforce the laws so nobody is hurt.  Example: Speeding.  You'll get a warning, a ticket, and I'm sure if you do it enough or go too fast, you'll be arrested [I'm not exactly sure on that or if that's how it works.  It's just an example of thought].
I think ACC has changed due to the members that have joined because of the attitude they have.  So again, I wouldn't go blaming the Mods, though a Staffer's attitude shouldn't  be snobby to any point and I don't really know many Staffers that are like that.  The newer members...I don't know...I've ran into a few that think they are better than everybody [As normally called a n00b; But hey, anybody can be like that; new member or not.].  I guess it's just the younger generation coming in because, if you look around, the world is like that.  They aren't afraid to voice their opinions and what-not.
Just know, I'm not labeling everybody [new member] as that because there are many nice newer members to ACC.  But just like the world, those people are taking over because we won't stand up fight for what we think is right [Hence, I do appreciate you making this thread.]

I do see ACC having a downfall if some of these issues are not fixed.  Freedom to express our interests and such [as you mentioned] should not be considered as spam.
I have to take part in agreeing with videogamer.  His points seem to get the mature part of the point accross.
But that sums up my view on the whole thing.  Call it right, call it wrong, but it's how I see things.

That's why I don't understand it when people want to get rid of the off-topic boards.  It's like, hello, that's what's holding up the site.  You think people are gonna sit around and talk about Animal Crossing all day?

Hopefully AC:Wii will generate enough interest to keep me/other people interested for at least a year.  Until then, the Off Topic board is dominating.
It's becoming more of a Family Friendly Off Topic Board With Animal Crossing Avatars.

But calling this FFOTBWACA might be hard to remember

"That's why I like the GG Off Topic Board."
I haven't visited that board in a few weeks, but last time I went there I noticed quite a few pointless threads on there too. Perhaps I came on a bad day but it drove me right back to my PTs.

"That describes my relationship with my friends here, and it was fostered by the atmosphere of ACC."
If you have met any of them recently I find that very surprising. In the "olden days" (talked about so much on ACC, perhaps a clue to the staff? It could only get more obvious if we bought a neon sign), it was much different and more meaningful than the cesspool the general public atmosphere has become on ACC. Long ago, I had friends I'd see everywhere on the public threads. Nowadays, most of my friends are almost exclusive to PTs as I am. I wouldn't have even seen this thread if the link hadn't been sent to me directly. To be quite honest, the people on the public threads in these past few years are generally not people I want to even associate with.

"You think people are gonna sit around and talk about Animal Crossing all day?"
I think what people mean is to limit the Off Topic boards; it's an Animal Crossing site, so why are the Animal Crossing boards not the biggest?

That's like going to the Movie Rental Store and expecting them to have a large extensive collection of Video Games; the Rental Store carries games occasionally but that's not their main purpose.

From the discussions I've seen, some people want to totally eliminate off-topic boards.

Have you seen a Blockbusters?

And I agree with Johntown that people don't want to talk about Animal Crossing all day.  I know that I don't.  And I also don't see how you could make Animal Crossing Boards "the biggest".

"Have you seen a Blockbusters? "
...Actually, yes, that was the point.

See, a Movie Rental Store wouldn't have a collection of video games larger than the movies themselves, rather it would be a Video Game rental store. You're probably getting ready to classify this as spamo spamo, but here's what I'm trying to say: The "Community" of ACC went into the Off Topic boards with little in the AC boards. We're not an Off Topic board with an AC board, we're an AC board with a little Off Topic. I think I've gotten Off Topic with this post kind of, so sorry.

Well, in the recent interest shift from Animal Crossing to Off Topic, this site in theory has become an Off Topic board with an AC board.

But it is an unsolvable problem, however major it may be.  There is no way for the Mods to change everyone's interest back to AC.

They could delete the Off Topic boards in an attempt to move back to AC boards, but that would end in disaster and mass leaving of many members.

No, but if a thread is pointless or there are 100 like it, or basically 99% of the Off-Topic board, they should be deleted. There doesn't even need to be a written rule, they should just use their judgment. And don't lock, that'd leave a mess. Just wipe them completely from existence.

"that would end in disaster and mass leaving of many members."
I've been saying that that is what the community needs to happen for 2 or more years now. It's like sticking nearly 1,000 snakes in a cage and adding only 1 mouse per day. The colony of snakes won't do well (sorry for the terrible simile). That's what's happening to this community; there are too many members for its own good and, forgive me for sounding rude or mean, but we simply need to drive away some of the more useless ones, regardless of how "active" they are (because that by no stretch of the imagination means they are worthwhile members).

Sorry to break up the discussion here, but I wanted to say a response.

"If you have met any of them recently I find that very surprising."
I've met a few of them recently, but most are from years ago. Partly because it can take awhile to get a close relationship with someone, and partly because of the state of the public boards. Definitely not disagreeing with your opinion of those.

As for the Off Topic Boards. jader201 knew that people wouldn't come only for Animal Crossing. It's natural. So those were added. But then most of the members started going to those rather than the AC ones. Maybe because it's been a while since a new Animal Crossing game was released. (Though really, two and a half years isn't too long.) So maybe when AC:Wii is released things will change, but the problem needs to be addressed now.

The Admins probably don't want masses to leave.  Looking at the Off Topic Board and in threads, I see many, many Orange Stars.  If ACC loses masses of members, they lose donations, and they lose money, potentially halting ACC for the rest that stay on a site supported by those people.

As sad as I am to say it, if the OT boards were deleted, masses of members would leave and complain to a huge extent. I would love to see it gone, but that could never happen.

ACC needs a pickup. Activities, contests, or games related to AC to keep it related. Something to get people back into their games or something. I'm not sure what exactly yet, but we need something new.

I think perhaps there is a good point made in saying that we should be self-moderating. And in saying this, I know full well what would happen, mass chaos. Then, after a while things would calm back down again. Because isn't that what happens during a revolution? The common people get riled up about something, win their war, therefore overthrowing the government, then they are suddenly faced with the harsh reality that they have no one to take care of them. Mass chaos ensues. Some retreat into the safety of their homes, others loot, pillage, and plunder till they pass out of exhaustion, and others-the majority, hopefully-help rebuild those who have lost homes and businesses int eh process and decide what they are going to do next.

About the waythat we could self-moderate; why not send the ut's to several people, and wither they decide amongst themselves or they fill it in separately and the computer tallies up the votes. When someone submits a UT it is sent to 20 randomly selected people, and each one decides what they would do. what we have to decide is whether they should know who else received the same one and talk to each other about it, or if they just have a list of options of how to respond to that rule and a computer tallies up the votes. Either way, the group of people changes for each ticket, and the most common idea will be the one heard. With the aid of computers, the community can moderate itself. That way, we can keep basically the same system, just the things that goes on behind the scenes is more complicated than it is now.

In response to your first statement, a photography thread is fine but one where a person posts  images that they are selling is not.

ACC is an Animal Crossing Community first and foremost. The community split has more to do  with the fact that many people who come here now are not Animal Crossing fans, they come here for the friend code tool to be able to exchange FCs with people in a family friendly environment.  Also many people have lost focus of what brought us together in the first  place, the Animal Crossing games. This is what the community was built around. Look to last  weeks poll to see the numbers. 722 people said they still play the original AC game. Almost  2,000 people said they either don't play it or don't have the game.

While the user ticket system is not perfect, it is much better than the old way of dealing with site issues. Previously a person wouldn't always know when they broke a rule. The rule violation might have been on the second page and the thread already moved on to page 10. Then at some point a person might receive a stickied warning PT telling that them they are in danger of being  temporarily banned. Of course they'd be shocked. They had no way of knowing that they were breaking rules all along.

One thing that I feel will help bring back the community feel is official events and community activities. These are currently being worked on and some are already out there. There is also the non-staff sponsored events. The people who run these are awesome and do a wonderful job of helping to keep that community feeling.

ACC has evolved since it started. Its changed a lot since I joined over 2 years ago. Some people fear change, some people welcome it. One thing is certain, change is inevitable. Should we throw the rules out completely? Maybe allow spam to run two or three pages in a row on various boards? How about posting profanity or links to inappropriate images? Many of the rules have evolved to address recent events on the website. They are as detailed as they are to try and remove any gray areas. Of course, we can say Don't Spam, Don't Troll, Don't Flame, Don't Curse. Those rules are nice and simple but who's to say what defines them? We can't possibly cover every scenario but the site rules exist as they are to define what is and what is not considered acceptable. Who defines what is considered "acceptable"? ACC members, through their complaints both public and private. Many of the rules have changed to address people's concerns. As an example, many people complained that the Off-Topic board is a mess. Discussions were held and instead of creating site-wide rules to address the situation, board rules were applied to try and address people's concerns.

For as long as I've been here, which is going on more than two years, this site has never been a community. Ever. Simple as that.

I have a lot of issues with the moderation of this site. Yes, I have a lot of respect for the moderators, but I have a lot of beef with the moderating system.

The contests? Sure, that one measly little art contest was pretty cool, but it didn't 'unite' us or bring back the community feel. This site is far too big to be a proper community any more, and there are far too many unpleasent people on this site.

Don't get me wrong, I like many aspects of this site. But a community it is not. The site may be made up of smaller 'communties' (or groups of friends), but calling this whole site a community would be almost laughably innacurate.

I agree with a couple points. One, there needs to be something to bring this "community" together to become a real community.
Two, the off topic board needs help. I saw that someone said that the staff should forget the locking, just delete the threads.
Three, bang it into everyone's heads, that this is an Animal Crossing Site.
Fourth, I think that if we got rid of the unused [a year or so] accounts, it would make it more of a community, because there would be less on again off again members. We could free up the username, so that if they wanted to come back, they could come back with the same username. Or something like that.
Concerning the flood of members that will come during AC:Wii, I suggest that we get a maximum user sign up per day. We could do it similar to some sites that are beta, where we could have a waiting list to sign up, or something like that.
Another idea, is to set up different Off Topic boards for each general age range. It wouldn't be enforced, it would be similar to the GG Boards. That way it would be better, so if you have meaningless spam threads that will get deleted anyways, they could go on the 7-9 range board, etc. That would help grow discussion on the OT boards, so it will be similar to what I have been told that it was years ago.
I hope this makes since!

I'll Tell you why I left. I actually Used to enjoy this site, Back then when most the rules were not created It was still organized and everything was fine and dandy. But Now What they do Is they make an announcement saying there gonna add a new system to Make the site more organized and break down on rules.

Obviously they wern't joking. This site has just gone down, I really don't have interest in it, I come on here but once a month or so, just to see how it's holding up. I got in trouble so many times for the stupidest reasons, You mods need to chill, People make mistakes its just human nature, With this point system all it does is bring down everyones self esteem. I realize it's been around and you want to show us to make us aware of where we stand but No, It didn't it trashed everything, Thats why your losing members...

I went searching for sites and I found almost all of them are better, They don't have as harsh rules, They are friendly like the members on here we all know and love, and they offer a wide variety of activities to play and chill with. What do you do on here? You post in forums that's it. Oh and the dumb pattern maker, where everyone uses a cheap program to make the best. If your getting my point good, This site is more Military ruled than any site I've seen. *content removed*

The sad part is the people get overloaded with these rules and they spam the site to death and get banned, I dislike this site very much because it's to strict. I could spam it if I want to, But I choose not to, I'm still making monthly checkups here to see who's left or why someone hasn't left when there is a whole new world out there.

In conclusion I think ACC Destroyed it's self Ban me from this site....Whatever...I would not really care that much about coming back or making another account on another Comp. I put a lot of time into this site as most can tell I was on all the time at one point for 19 Hours 30 min Straight. I mean seriously... Recently we can't advertise youtube Vids. on here correct? Wow How sad... And the fact you don't give to the members that much. If you really wanted to make the community better make some upgrades make it where you can make your sig like a pic. I know i'm get this "It's a waste of Bandwidth" No it's not if you get a bigger Server your good. It shouldn't be a mod special. Mods are just members that choose to be part of the police of the site, thats your choice you shouldn't get some feature besides a emblem by your name M for mod. Im a mod on quite a few sites and I know how it is, but it's volunteer work .

This Halo2Junkie and I'm out.

{Probably gonna get some dumb explanation from the staff saying why but seriously you have nothing you can go against you know what the admins did wrong so nothing you can say that's gonna make me change my mind about this site.

The answer to why we don't have pictures in our signatures, is because Hoggle did not want the site to look trashy. Also, Mods do not get the ability to post pictures in their signatures. No one does. The Mods can, however, use HTML. (-;
