The warm, bright sun brought joy to a group of friends who were walking on this nice fall day. The soft wind blew through the trees, and sometimes an occasional leaf floated down. This leaf was then raked into the huge leaf pile. Anchovy was filled with excitement when he finally looked up from the rake. He and his two friends, Jeremiah and Vesta, had created the biggest leaf pile ever. It was a few feet high, and around 5 feet in diameter, and was brightly colored with the gorgeous leafs that fell from the tree tops. None of them could wait to jump into the pile of leaves, only to rake it up again and repeat the process over and over until their whole day was spent.
“Oh, I can’t wait any longer.” Anchovy said under his breath. He took a step backwards, and started running toward the leaf pile.
“Hey” Vesta and Jeremiah laughed as they started towards the leaf pile too. They all took a final leap, and landed in the soft and fun leaf pile. Tons of leaves flown in every direction, and all three friends were laughing their heads off. They all agreed they had to do it again, when they were suddenly interrupted by a soft, barely audible noise. It wasn’t an annoying noise, but actually quite beautiful. It almost seemed like music, but there wasn’t anyone else in the town.
A few weeks ago, Vesta, Jeremiah and Anchovy decided to move to a new town together. They didn’t like their noisy neighbors very much, so it wasn’t a hard choice. The town they moved too had a Nooks, Clothing shop, and Post Office. It even came with a wishing well and lots of fruit. It was incredible that no one else was there before them, since the town was perfect.
“Hey, let’s go see what it is!” Anchovy piped up.
“No way,” Jeremiah complained, “I don’t like to mess with the supernatural.”
“Silly, there’s no such things as ghosts,” Anchovy replied. He then motioned for the two friends to follow, and they did. The noise seemed to be coming in the direction of the wishing well. Anchovy took the lead, then Vesta, and Jeremiah look the back. A few steps behind the other two, and looked back every other step to make sure they weren’t being followed.
They approached the wishing well, and the music suddenly stopped. A clanking sound suddenly followed, and a flute was left lying on the ground next to the well. A colorful piece of paper lay under the flute, and seemed to have writing on it. Anchovy took the flute off the paper, and was reaching towards the paper, when a sudden gust of wind blew the paper into the ocean.
“Creepy,” Jeremiah said, “Can we leave now?”

Anchovy was still thinking about the mysterious musician, and at night he left his house to further investigate the wishing well. He went alone, since he didn’t want to bother Vesta and Jeremiah. He didn’t understand how someone could slip away so quickly and how there was no immediate evidence of where the person went. When Anchovy reached the well, he walked around it a few times, and taped every stone to see if any were hollow or enclosed a secret passage. To his disappointment, none were. This only added to the mystery. Anchovy took another look at the wishing well, and turned his back to it and took a few steps. He just couldn’t leave this mystery alone, but he knew it was unsafe in the dark with an unknown person running about.
“What are you searching for?” A bubbly voice said.
“Excuse me, who’s there?” Anchovy asked without turning around.
“Only I, and your two friends.” The voice replied. With this said, Anchovy turned around, only to find nothing behind him, except the wishing well. Even more puzzled, Anchovy turned 360 degrees around, and still didn’t see anyone.
“I can’t see anyone, not an animal in sight.” Anchovy whispered as he neared the wishing well.
“I’m not an animal,” the bubbly voice said, “I’m your friendly neighborhood wishing well.” Anchovy, not aware wishing wells could talk, took a few steps back from the well. The well’s stone face turned into something more animate. Its lips moved, its jaw moved, and its eyes blinked. It was amazing, one second it was stone, and the next it was alive and talking.
“Then where are my friends?” Anchovy asked the well.
“Behind the trees over there,” the well replied. Two dark shady figures came out from the trees, and slowly made their way to the well. Anchovy couldn’t make out their faces right away, and was scared they weren’t his friends, but as they neared closer he noticed they were.
“We saw you leave your house and decided to follow you,” Vesta admitted, “We’re really sorry, aren’t we Jeremiah.” Jeremiah was to fascinated by the well to take any notice to Vesta’s response.
“Oh supernatural wishing well, grant me one wish, oh please!” Jeremiah said, almost in a mesmerizing tone.
“Do you have 100 bells?” the well replied.
“What?! You rip off artist!” Jeremiah said angrily.
“Stop!” Anchovy yelled, trying to stop the fight before it begins. He then walked up to the well and asked it about the mysterious musician.
“I remember that day very well,” the well replied, “He, (or was it a girl?), sat right on my ledge, with his (or her) face away from mine. He (or she) wore layers of clothes, and I couldn’t make out what type of animal it was (or even if it was an animal), but he (or she) played the flute very well, don’t you agree?”
“Do you know where they ran off to?” Anchovy questioned.
“I’m not sure. The music from that flute was so mesmerizing that I didn’t pay much attention. It was wonderfully played and I enjoyed it so much. I wish I knew who the musician was.”
“Thank you very much, wishing well.” Anchovy said and started to leave.
“You want to know something? There’s this dog, I believe his name is K.K. He’s also a musician; he might know information about our mysterious person.” With this said, the Well’s face turned cold, as it resumed its non talkative position.

Ch. 3 Clink-Clank Cops Morning. The dew was still on the ground, the birds still sleeping in their nets, and the sun was gleaming through Jeremiah’s window. Jeremiah turned around in bed, to keep the sun out of his eyes, but after five minutes he was startled by a strange noise. The noise itself was annoying, but somewhat familiar. Jeremiah knew he heard it somewhere before, but just couldn’t think this early in the morning. It was a tap-tap clank sort of noise. Since he couldn’t get back to sleep with the noise, he decided it was time to get up. He looked at the clock hanging on the wall, and say it was 10 o’clock AM. Then the details of his late night yesterday came back to him. He remembered about the supernatural well, and about K.K., and about how the well was a rip off artist.
Jeremiah then continued to get out of bed, changed out of his pajamas, and put on a nice blue shirt. He sat down at his kitten table (the one that Vesta gave him for his birthday), and ate breakfast, which was waffles and cream. And all during breakfast, the noise continued. To make matters worse, it stopped and started at irregular intervals.
Then for some time, the tap-tap clank sound stopped. “I can finally get some rest” Jeremiah thought to himself. He put his arms on the table, and put his head on top of them. He quickly found a cozy spot, and was back to sleep.
Vesta and Anchovy both woke up early, due to the excitement of all that happened. Neither of them could sleep very well, but both felt awake. The tap-tap clank noise caught their curiosity, and decided to check what was going on.
“It’s coming from this way.” Anchovy insisted, as he pointed left.
“No, the noise is coming from this direction.” Vesta claimed as she pointed in another direction.
“I have 20:20 hearing, which is perfect. And I know it’s coming from this direction.” Anchovy said, trying to convince Vesta he was right.
“Well, I’m perfect in every single way.” Vesta replied, as she started walking in the direction she pointed in.
“FINE!” Anchovy said, “Let us see who’s right.”
With that, they went their separate ways. After several minutes, Vesta was first to arrive at the source of the sound.
“I win.” Vesta said as Anchovy arrived 10 minutes later. Anchovy, who was too dumbfounded by what he say, didn’t even bother answering, and possibly didn’t hear the comment. Before his two little eyes were two dogs, each carrying and pounding bricks, logs, metal, and all sorts of housing supplies. He wasn’t expecting more villagers, especially two cops. They seemed to be building a Police Station and a pretty decent one as well.
Within minutes of seeing the cops, he had a plan already formed in his head. They would be the perfect people to help with their mysterious flute player. When/if the musician ever came back, the cops would be on their trail within seconds, and hopefully find out who the person is. “It’s Perfect!” Anchovy yelled. He looked at the cops, and they seemed somewhat able to catch the cops. “All dogs are fast” Anchovy kept saying to himself as he watched them. He didn’t want to believe that the town he was staying in had slow cops. He really wanted to know who the musician was.
The shorter cop slipped on a bunch of nails, and fell to the ground, and let out a loud yelp. It keep Vesta’s and Anchovy’s ears ringing. Suddenly, from another place in town, there was an even louder yelp. Anchovy looked around to try to find where the yelp came from, and he didn’t have to look long. Jeremiah, who had a big bump on his head, was running right towards the cop who fell on the nails. After seeing Vesta and Anchovy, he started to calm down.
It turns out Jeremiah was startled by the loud yelp, and fell out of his chair and hit his head, which caused in to yell out in pain. “I’m sorry (…I think…)” the cop who tripped said, “I didn’t mean to hurt someone.”
“It’s ok. I’ll just have to get a new hairdo to cover the bump” Jeremiah said, “By the way, I’m Jeremiah.”
“And I’m Booker. Nice to meet you,” The cop said as he held out his hand (or technically speaking, it was a paw), which Jeremiah then shook with his hand (or technically speaking, it was a flipper)
Booker then introduced Copper, and Jeremiah introduced his friends. “We have important news.” Copper stated, “We have been selected to serve the villagers of this town from the National Security Headquarters for Animals (NSHA). He are here to inform you of upcoming events, keep your village crime free, and regulate the lost and found. I will now inform you of upcoming events. Totakeke, or K.K., will be coming tomorrow at 8:00 at night to do a live performance. And Redd is scheduled to come on Monday. You should find him on acre C-4. There are no suspected crimes or criminals, and currently there are no lost and found items.”
“Do you do investigations and detective stuff as well?” Anchovy asked.
“Yes, We do. Is there something you want us to investigate?” Copper responded.
“Actually, there is. Yesterday at the wishing well, there was a mysterious musician, and played the flute wonderfully. We don’t know who it could’ve been, and they left no trace of whom or where they went. I…We would like to know who it is.” Anchovy said without any pauses.
“I see. We will be right on the case after we finish up here. You can count on us…I think.” Booker said, as they began to build again. But this time they seemed to go slightly faster. Possibly because they have a mystery to solve, or maybe it was just getting hotter. The Town Bell then started ringing. It was now Noon.
Please Note: This story is also being posted on My Website. It also has better music files, in case you want to hear a more realistic flute. It will also have fixed grammar and spelling mistakes, since I can edit it any time, unlike ACC.
Also, I would like to point out I enjoy any type of comments, good or bad.

As the bells rang, a familiar tune echoed through the small village. None of the friends said a word. They just stood and looked at each other. Someone changed the town tune, and that someone changed it to the same tune as the flute player.
“What a beautiful tune you’ve got in this place,” Copper remarked, “Which one of you made it?”
“None of us,” Anchovy said, “That town tune has the same melody the mysterious flute player played.”
“A clue…I think,” Booker said as he looked at his partner.
“Yes, it is a clue.” Copper said.
They said good bye to the cops, and Vesta, Jeremiah, and Anchovy went to the post office, which is right by the town tune board, hoping to find new information of their mysterious flute player. To their disappointment, Phyllis was the post office clerk.
“Doesn’t Pelly usually work at the post office at this hour?” Jeremiah questioned.
“She got strep throat.” Phyllis remarked, “What do you want? If you’re here to loiter, do me a favor and get out.”
“No, we would like you ask you some…” Vesta started saying.
“I don’t like them, now get out.” Phyllis said in a louder voice.
“You don’t have to be cranky.” Jeremiah said under his breath.
“I heard that!” Phyllis said, almost to the point of shouting.
“Well, did you hear anyone change the town tune today?” Anchovy said.
“I heard something outside. There seemed to be a scratching type noise, then it stopped, and then it started up again and slowly faded away.” Phyllis answered, “NOW GET OUT!”
“Thank you!” Anchovy replied.
“For what?” Phyllis said as they started leaving, “Kids these days.”
As they left the post office, Jeremiah commented “I can’t believe Pelly is her sister. They are exact opposites. I like Pelly much better.”
And from inside the post office, you could hear Phyllis screaming, “I HEARD THAT!”
Jeremiah then rushed to the next acre, and waited for his friends. To his disappointment, Vesta and Anchovy took their time to walk to him.
“Who would make a scratching sound?” Anchovy wondered out loud, “Who could it possibly be?...Maybe the flute can tell us something!”
Anchovy rushed to his house, leaving Vesta and Jeremiah to themselves. “So…” Jeremiah said, “Want to go play...um…something?”
“Sure, we can play hopscotch” Vesta said, “I’m perfect at hopscotch, as well as everything else I do.”

Ch. 5 The Flute Anchovy searched through his drawers for the flute. He had forgotten all about it before, and forgot where he put it. He searched and searched but the flute could not be found. He went to his bed and sat down. A cold draft blew across his face, and he shivered. He looked around to see where the breeze could be coming from, and to his dismay he found the window open.
“Someone must’ve come through the window and stole the flute.” He thought to himself, “How could I be so foolish to leave the windows unlocked.”
He laid down his head on the pillow of this bed and closed his eyes. He rolled over in his bed, and suddenly felt a small pain in his side. He felt around to see what could cause the pain, and his hands clutched around a cold, round object. He pulled the object to his face, and let out a shout of joy. He recalled falling asleep with the flute in hand, and it must’ve stayed in his bed when he got up the following morning, and forgot all about it.
He examined the flute, and it was still in perfect condition. He looked around and made sure no one was watching. Anchovy had a secret he didn’t want anyone to know. He had a desire to play the flute ever since he was a little bird, and now was his chance. He placed his lips on the cool metal, and began to blow. No sound was made so he began to blow harder and harder. Still no sound was made. He finally gave up, and placed the flute back on his bed.
With a swoop, a bat came flinging through the air and hit Anchovy on the head. He turned around and tried to get a clear image of his attacker, but he already started feeling the effects of the swing. He started getting a throbbing headache, blurred vision, and finally passed out.

Ch. 6-The Dark Anchovy opened his eyes, or at least he thought he did, for when he opened his eyes he saw nothing, just an eerie black surrounding him. There also seemed to be voices and noises buzzing around him. This added to the monstrous headache he already had. It was so monstrous; he couldn’t recall where he was or what he was doing. He tried to lift up his arm, but it was forced back down. “Strange.” Anchovy thought as he closed his eyes, since they served no use to him. And before long, he found himself getting tired and sleepy and went back to sleep.
Ch. 7-Fun and Games, or is it? Jeremiah and Vesta finished their game of hopscotch, which Vesta won. They then decided that they would go play scrabble. Again, Vesta won. Vesta then declared that they should relax in front of a TV and drink Lemon Tea. She didn’t allow Jeremiah enough time to argue, so they both went to Vesta’s house. Jeremiah sat on the lovely chair and watched the news while Vesta prepared the tea.
The news was the same as always, weather, weather, and more weather. The only exciting thing about the news was how the two cops had found their first lost and found item. It was a flute, which was found near Anchovy’s house. Jeremiah was about to change the channel when Vesta walked into the room.
“Oh me gosh!” Vesta said in a panicky tone.
“Huh?” Jeremiah questioned as he dropped the remote.
“We forgot to invite Anchovy!” Vesta screamed, “We have to go get him at once!” Before Jeremiah knew what was happening, he was being dragged by Vesta. She dragged him all the way to Anchovy’s house. She went up and knocked on the door. There was no answer.
“He must not be home.” Jeremiah said.
“Well if he isn’t home.” Vesta started. She looked at the mailbox, “Oh he has mail. Let’s be nice and put it in his house.”
“But he’s not home and we can’t open the door. Why not just go back and drink Lemon Tea?” Jeremiah suggested. He didn't like the idea of breaking into a friends house.
“That’s not a problem!” Vesta said as she approached the front door. Within a few seconds, she kicked the door in a strange way and it instantly broke in two. She then grabbed the mail and walked in.
When Vesta entered the room, she literally turned pale. The room was a mess. Tables were turned over, chairs seemed like they were thrown across the room, and feathers where everywhere. Jeremiah walked in and also turned very pale. They didn’t even have to look at each other to know what the other person was thinking, for they were thinking the same thing. Something horrible took place here.

Ch. 8 A musty smell lingered around Anchovy. Unpleasantness filled the small, and not so cozy, room. A sharp metal object was being held against the back of Anchovy, causing him pain every time he tried to move. He couldn’t see anything, for he was covered in a thick and dense darkness. Sounds, somewhat muffled, seemed to find their way to his ears, which make the experience much more eerie. He had no idea where he was, or even why he was here. His head still throbbed, and the headache did not want to go away. He was cold, hungry, and felt lost and empty. No friends, no support, nor did he have hope. There wasn’t a chance he could escape, or even contact someone. He was lost and alone, scarred and miserable. Nothing to comfort, nothing to help forget the terrible condition he was in.
“So, you’re finally awake?” a cold voice spoke from the darkness, “I’m sorry my people weren’t as nice to you as I would’ve expected, I see they left quite a bruise on your head.”
“Quite a bruise? It still hurts…a lot. And who am I talking to? Why do you cower in the darkness?” Anchovy replied in a rage.
“I’m not cowering.” The cold voice replied, “You’re in a lighted room.” There was a long pause, which made the room feel empty to Anchovy. Was it true that the room was really lighted? Or was he trying to mess with his brain?

Ch. 9 “Nothing,” commented Copper as he a Booker exchanged glances, “There isn’t a clue in this place, or at least none we could find.”
“I…um…I think…” Booker said, and then stopped.
“You…think?” Copper said, almost cracking up.
“I was just going to give my thoughts!...I think” Booker yelled back.
“I’m sorry, it wasn’t right for me to say that.” Copper said, now embarrassed by what he had just said, “Now, what was your thought.”
“I just think that the smell left in this room smells familiar.” Booker said, “I swear I’ve smelt it somewhere before.”
Copper took a big sniff, and tried to remember if he himself had smelt it.
“Did you find a clue?!” Vesta exclaimed, hoping it would help solve the mystery where Anchovy was. They searched the whole town and questioned the few people who resided here. They’ve completed a detailed investigation of the town, and it ended in vain. Anchovy wasn’t in the town, or if he was it was clear enough he wasn’t going to be found, no matter how hard they looked.
After releasing the air, Copper nodded, “It does smell familiar, it smells like the meatloaf mom used to make!”
“That’s the smell!” Booker exclaimed, “What memories it brings back!”
“Oh bother…” Vesta said, as she started to bang her head against the wall.
“Hey, you know you lose brain cells when you do that.” Jeremiah said, trying to sound smart.
“Well, these brain cells aren’t helping us find Anchovy at the moment, so why does it matter?” Vesta said, almost shouting, “Why can’t I think of a place Anchovy could be…”
Jeremiah was speechless, he didn’t know how to make Vesta feel better, since he wasn’t feeling well after Anchovy was found missing. Thorough out the years, the three built a special bond, only true friends can make, and now with one of them missing they both felt like part of them was missing as well.
“Well, at least have hope,” said Booker, trying to comfort them both, “And maybe a miracle will find its way to our small town.”

Ch .10 “I see.” The cold voice said, “They weren’t supposed to harm you. They weren’t even supposed to bring you here. You see, all I wanted was the flute. I didn’t want you at all.”
“What’s so important about a flute?” Anchovy asked.
“It holds many answers to questions I seek.” The cold voice replied.
“What type of questions?” Anchovy questioned.
“You’re in no condition to be asking questions.” The voice said, somewhat harsh. Anchovy knew he was hiding something, something about the flute he didn’t want anyone to know. “I have offered an exchange to your friends. I will give you back for the flute.”
“I see.” Anchovy said, “So you didn’t get the flute after all.”
“No,” The voice said, as he walked away and a door shut.
Ch. 11 Morning found its way to the quiet town, bringing Saturday with it. Vesta was snoozing quietly in her lovely bed. It was nice she could get some sleep, since she hasn’t been doing well after Anchovy went missing. Her dreams tormented her at night, and reality tormented during the day.
The morning dew was still on the grass, giving it an emerald shine, sparkling in the morning sun. The clouds hovered within the sky, making way for the rays of sun, which offered warmth for the small animals.
A small sound echoed around the town, bouncing from side to another. A familiar melody wove its way around a new piece of the song. The song that caused much pain and discomfort just got much more complicated.
“Uhghapake” (or something similar to that) Vesta said, as the song awoke her, “I don’t need more wild goose chases…wait…the flute might be the answer to Anchovy!”
Vesta quickly got up, and changed her clothes. And quickly ran outside. Surprised by the crispness of morning, she paused. She spun around, taking in all the peace morning can bring. It was so crisp and nice outside, one felt so comforted and refreshed. And for a single moment, forgot all the fears and worries the harsh world can bring.
The song again played, but that’s not the least of Vesta’s problems. How it was played was. Inside the house, she would just follow the sound, but she didn’t suspect the sound would be coming from two different directions. The flute was coming from the wishing well, but the piano seemed to be played in the opposite side.
“What a problem.” Vesta sighed.
